A continuation of MUS 230, Introduction to Music Literature I, covering the ClassIC era<br />
through 20th century. Offered for non-music majors who can read music; required for music<br />
majors. Offered only in alternate Spring semesters.<br />
MUS 250—Choral Conducting . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 Credits<br />
Study of choral conducting techniques; and management of church, school and community<br />
choral groups both vocally and organizationally. Offered for both music majors and non-music<br />
majors. Students should be able to read music. Sp<br />
MUS 1030—Music Appreciation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 Credits<br />
Open to all students who desire a better understanding of music. In this one-semester course,<br />
traditional art music will be explored through class lecture as well as weekly listening assignments.<br />

APPLIED MUSIC: ENSEMBLES<br />
Non-music majors are invited to participate in any of the music ensembles.<br />
Auditions are required only for MUS 113—Celebration; all other ensembles are open<br />
to all students. All ensembles may be repeated for credit but cannot be repeated to replace<br />
a failing grade.<br />
MUS 112—<strong>Roane</strong> <strong>State</strong> Concert Choir . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 Credit<br />
Performs a variety of music, from pop to major choral works and selections from standard<br />
choral literature. Meets three hours per week. May be repeated for credit. Open to all students.<br />
MUS 113—Celebration. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 Credit<br />
A contemporary show choir. Meets four hours per week and begins one week prior to the beginning<br />
of fall semester. Students accepted into Celebration are expected to participate in the<br />
class both fall and spring semester of the academic year. May be repeated for credit. Admission<br />
by audition only. (Auditions are held each spring for the following year.)<br />

Meets two hours per week and begins one week prior to the beginning of fall semester. Student<br />
accepted into Celebration are expected to participate in the class both fall and spring semesters<br />
of the academic year.<br />

String, brass, and woodwind ensembles will rehearse three hours per week and perform three<br />
times during a semester. Classical literature for standard instrumentations will be emphasized.<br />
Rehearsal times arranged according to students’ schedules. Assignment of groups to be determined<br />

Performs traditional and contemporary wind ensemble literature. Open to all qualified students.<br />
Meets three hours per week. Open to all students who play band instruments. F, Sp<br />

Performs arrangements for jazz in contemporary and jazz-rock styles. Performances regularly<br />
scheduled off-campus, as well as for student body. Meets two hours per week. No audition is<br />
required. May be repeated for credit.<br />
MUS 118—Gospel Choir . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 Credit<br />
Perform traditional and contemporary gospel music designed for students who enjoy singing<br />
gospel music. Emphasis is placed upon public performances. Meets three hours per week. May<br />
be repeated for credit. Open to all students.<br />
MUS 119—Women’s Choir . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 Credit<br />
Vocal ensemble consisting of female students. Performs a variety of choral literature specifically<br />
designed for the female voice. Ensemble will perform a minimum of three times per semester.<br />
May be repeated for credit but not to replace a failing grade. Meets on the Oak Ridge<br />
campus.
