A continuation of Ophthalmic Dispensing II to include advanced prescription analysis, clinical<br />
astigmatism, fashion spectacle dispensing, aniseikonia, low vision care, clinical types of hyperopia,<br />
ocular injuries and emergencies, visual field anomalies, orthoptics, prosthetic eyes,<br />
ophthalmic instrumentation, and theory of refraction.<br />

OPT 270—Ophthalmic Materials III . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 Credits<br />
A continuation of Ophthalmic Materials II to include cataract eyewear, glass lens tempering,<br />
high minus lens designs/materials, and a variety of specialty lenses. Practice management including:<br />
ordering, inventory, duty to warn, equipment maintenance, semantics and salesmanship.<br />
Licensed professional responsibilities are presented, along with the latest trends (fashion,<br />
technological breakthroughs). Advanced spectacle fabrication in the lab, to include: semirimless<br />
mounts, various repairs, progressive lenses, bifocal projects, and prism RXs.<br />

OPT 280—Contact Lenses III . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 Credits<br />
Continuation of Contact Lenses II, dealing mainly with special fitting problems and special<br />
lens design. Practice management techniques are included, as well as continued use of all<br />
needed instrumentation.<br />

PHARMACY<br />
PHAR 1010—Introduction to Pharmacy Practice . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 Credits<br />
This course will introduce the student to the role of the pharmacy technician in institutional and<br />
community pharmacies. Topics will include legal and ethical aspects of support personnel,<br />
drug distribution and control, utilization of computers in the industry, verbal communication<br />
skills for the pharmacy technician and an introduction to the health care system.<br />

PHAR 1020—Anatomy for Pharmacy Technicians . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 Credits<br />
A basic course in anatomy and physiology with emphasis on those tissues and organ systems<br />
that are most impacted by drugs. Medical terminology will be developed towards the needs of<br />
the pharmacy technician.<br />
PHAR 1030—Pharmacology and Therapeutics . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 Credits<br />
This course introduces the students to the basic principles of pharmacology, including an introduction<br />
to effects of various drugs, hormones and nutritional products. The students will be<br />
introduced to the general therapeutic doses of drugs and their interactions with the various organs<br />
of the body.<br />
PHAR 1110—Pharmacy Law and Ethics . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 Credits<br />
This course will discuss state and federal laws, which govern the practice of pharmacy and the<br />
distribution of drugs. Students will also be introduced to the Tennessee Pharmacy Act and the<br />
Rules and Regulations promulgated by the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy. Health and safety<br />
regulations, effective communications with patients and co-workers, patient confidentiality,<br />
and other ethical aspects of the profession.<br />
PHAR 1120—Physical Pharmacy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 Credits<br />
This course will introduce the student to the physical aspects for the proper storage of drugs,<br />
toxic and flammable agents. The students will be introduced to the formulation, compounding<br />
and dissolution of tablets, ointments, capsules, suppositories and other vehicles for the therapeutic<br />
delivery of drugs. Students will also be introduced to topics such as stability, standards<br />
for various preparations, etc.<br />
