OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY STUDENT CHAPTER

The Old Dominion University Student Chapter engaged in social,

charity, recruitment, and academic activities throughout 2011 to

enhance awareness of HF/E as a discipline, to increase membership

in the chapter, and to foster a sense of community for existing

members. Recruitment efforts included the dissemination of

human factors PhD program flyers to APA-accredited undergraduate

programs and participation in campus-wide recruitment fairs.

Members attended meetings of other student organizations to build

and strengthen relationships across campus. An alumni and accreditation

celebration dinner was held in Las Vegas for current students

and alumni who attended the 2012 Annual Meeting.

The student chapter hosted a field trip to NASA Langley Research

Center, which included lectures by Raymond Comstock and Lance

Prinzel and hands-on experience with flight simulators. Members

sponsored webinar and brown-bag events beyond those hosted by

HFES. Roger Cholewiak, the final director and custodian of Frank

Geldard’s Cutaneous Communication Laboratory at Princeton U.,

gave a lecture on vibrotactile displays via Skype. Neil Ganey was

a guest speaker as part of a “Human Factors in the Workplace” students-only

brown-bag series. The chapter planned a campus-wide

World Usability Day event, including a webinar with Anthony D.

Andre.

For National Ergonomics Month, the chapter created a newsletter

that included guidance for backpack ergonomics and healthy

postures in the workplace. Along with six other student organizations

on campus, the chapter cosponsored a fall-themed event for

children in the community. Members shared the newsletter with

parents and answered questions while their children were engaged

in activities. The chapter also shared this newsletter with clients at

a large chiropractic clinic in the community.

The chapter consists of 28 students and 5 faculty members.
