Where is it located?<br />

One of India’s nest wildlife reserves, Thekkady sits at<br />

an altitude of 900-1800 m above sea level. Located in<br />

the Idukki district of Kerala, it lies close to the Kerala-<br />

Tamil Nadu border town of Kumily about 257 km away<br />

from the state capital - Thiruvananthapuram.<br />

Hop on a train<br />

You can catch a train to Kottayam or Madurai which<br />

are the nearest railway stations to Thekkady.<br />

Once you reach the resort<br />

A heady mix of spice infused air is what greets you as<br />

you first enter Club Mahindra Tusker Trails. You’ll find<br />

the ‘machan’ styled resort nestled amidst sprawling<br />

coffee, cardamom and pepper plantations interspersed<br />

Places of interest in Thekkady<br />

The Periyar Tiger Reserve: Spread across 777 sq. km<br />

which includes 360 sq. km of dense evergreen forests,<br />

the Periyar Tiger Reserve attracts visitors from the<br />

world over. The articial lake formed by the<br />

Mullaiperiyar Dam adds to the charm of the reserve and<br />

allows visitors the unique experience of viewing<br />

wildlife at close quarters from the safety of the boat.<br />

Vandiperiyar: A major trade centre and home to a<br />

number of tea factories, Vandiperiyar is located 18 km<br />

away from Thekkady. The Periyar river ows through<br />

the centre of this town and nourishes its vast coffee,<br />

tea and pepper plantations. You can also visit the<br />

Government Agriculture Farm and Flower Garden<br />

here for their delightful arrays of roses, orchids and<br />

anthuria.<br />

Pullumedu: Located 43 km away from Thekkady,<br />

the winding journey to this scenic hill town offers<br />

stunning views of the surrounding hills. You can catch<br />

glimpses of the famous Sree Ayyappa Temple at<br />

Sabarimala from here. Accessible only by jeep,<br />

Pullumedu is part of the restricted forest zone and<br />

requires special permission from the Wildlife<br />

Preservation Officer, Thekkady (Ph.: 0486-322027) or the<br />

Range Officer, Vallakkadavu (Ph.: 0486-352515.) This<br />

place is opened to public only for a few days in a year.<br />

Plantation Tours: Covering cardamom, pepper,<br />

coffee and tea plantations, tea factories, tribal<br />

settlements and the surrounding hill regions, these<br />

tours are arranged from the District Tourism<br />

Information Office (Ph.:0486-322620).<br />

Kurisumala: Offering panoramic views of Kumily and<br />

the Periyar Tiger Reserve, this is a destination for<br />

adventure tourism and trekking.<br />

Kumily: Situated on the outskirts of Periyar Tiger<br />

Reserve, this plantation town is located 2 km away from<br />

Thekkady. It is an important shopping and spice trade<br />

centre.<br />

Pandikuzhi: Located 5 km from Kumily, Pandikuzhi’s<br />

picturesque spectrum of exotic ora, fauna and gurgling<br />

streams, have made it a popular spot for picnics, treks<br />

and photography.<br />

Chellarkovil: A serene village with breathtaking views<br />

of verdant plains and cascading falls, Chellarkovil slopes<br />

down to the famous coconut groves of Cumbum in Tamil<br />

Nadu and is located 15 km from Kumily<br />

Vandanmedu: One of the world’s largest auction<br />

centres for cardamom, Vandanmedu is located 25 km<br />

from Kumily. A walk through its sprawling cardamom<br />

plantations is a heady experience.<br />

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was declared as a Tiger Reserve in 1978 under the Project Tiger<br />

Scheme, and in 1982, the core area of the Sanctuary (350 sq. km) was notified as a National Park.
