Eastlake star Aaron Bruce is the Canberra Labor Club Player of the Week
the side. Bruce is one of the most promising young players in the AFL Canberra
competition and is a player to watch in season 2009.
Round 1 crowds, well up on 2008, saw a dominant
Eastlake over Ainslie, a seesawing affair between
Queanbeyan and Tuggeranong and an impressive display
by Belconnen over the Sydney Swans.
The 2009 AFL Canberra Labor Club Premiership promises
a lot more surprises.
I watched much of the three Under 18’s opening round
matches. Surely this is our showcase, young men from
Canberra, Queanbeyan, surrounding NSW and the South
Coast playing an exciting end to end brand of football.
In May and June a South East Region Academy of Sport
team will take on each of our six clubs, five games to
be played in Batemans Bay, one in Canberra. If this
pilot program is successful and with the Gungahlin Jets
aiming to field a team in 2010, next year could see an
8 team competition.
Strong, competitive Under 16 Divisions provide the
pathway for the Under 18 competition to continue to
grow and is a solid basis for entry into senior football.
AFL Canberra By-Laws introduced in time for the 2009
season encourages boys to taste Under 18 footy and is
aimed to keep boys in the game as they become adults.
AFL Canberra also provides our young men with a unique
opportunity to play senior football with an AFL Reserves
team. To be able to be part of the Sydney Swans unit
for a day and compete in the red and white in Division 1
is the ‘money can’t buy’ experience that greatly assists
their development.
Just ask the Tuggeranong six who now have a
Premiership Medallion to remind them of their
September experience last year. Each week that the
Swans play in Canberra/Queanbeyan at least six of
our young players have this opportunity. I watch with
great interest our clubs continued commitment to this
and look forward to seeing the talented youth who are
selected for this opportunity go on to be better players.
The AFL Canberra Record this week remains a 28 page,
full colour publication but for 2009 will sell for just $3.
This is thanks to an Official Partnership with CanPrint.
David and Tom Daniels have supported AFL Canberra for
many years and provide this high quality publication and
all AFL Canberra’s printing needs. Please support them
of these is in the back of his and every AFL Canberra
Record.
This week’s record includes for the first time team
lists for Division 3 and 4. Gungahlin, Harman,
Woden, Murrumbidgee, ADFA, ANU, Goulburn, Yass,
Cootamundra and Cooma join Eastlake, Ainslie,
Belconnen and Tuggeranong in the quest for premiership
glory. All ten matches are in Canberra this Saturday.
All eight ACT Women’s AFL teams play Sunday (April
5) in the AFL Canberra NAB Challenge from 8am and
a come’n’try day for Youth Girls will also be staged at
Dairy Farmers Park from 11am. Enjoy free entry and
the Tigers famous game day catering and facilities and
watch our women and youth girls prepare for their
2009 seasons.
This Saturday is in fact “Super Saturday”. All Division
1, 2 & U 18 matches will be played on the one day.
Tuggeranong v Belconnen at Greenway and Ainslie v
Queanbeyan at Ainslie in all three grades. Eastlake travel
to ANZ Stadium to take on the Swans in the match of
the round. Marist takes on Eastlake and officially opens
the new the new look Lindwall Oval, unfurling their
2008 premiership flag.
Having Sunday as a day of rest is unlikely to continue
if we do not immediately address the shortfall in our
umpiring numbers. Welcome back our existing umpires
and a warm welcome to our new ones however we
still need more. Club umpire courses will be held later
this month that all clubs are required to provide club
members to attend. For any umpiring enquiries, contact
umpiring Development Manager Kevin Tingey on
6232 6633. This is our competition’s highest priority. I
encourage you to make this yours if we want to
continue to enjoy seeing each other at the footy.
FROM SYDNEY
TO DEMON
LAND
Eastlake’s commanding victory over Ainslie last week
marked the return of Aaron Bruce to the Demons after a
season on the Sydney Swans rookie list. Exposure to the
elite level looks to have paid immediate dividends with
Bruce best on ground in their 86 point win.
Bruce said his year with Sydney had been a massive
learning experience.
“It was a fantastic experience, one that I will be forever
grateful for. It made me more mature as a player and
as a person as well.”
The 19-year-old said his time with the Swans
significantly improved his football.
“The professionalism, making sure you look after yourself
away from football, and training with elite players really
helped with my development as a player.”
The midfielder’s return to Canberra is a boost for the
competition as Eastlake won his signature over several
SANFL and VFL clubs. Bruce said that Canberra was
the most suitable option.
“With family and friends here it seemed to be the
right fit for me and I’m also starting university this
year. Eastlake has a really good opportunity to win
a premiership this year and I definitely want to be
a part of that.”
Bruce was happy with the overall team performance
in round one and content that he could play a role
for the team.
“I just tried to contribute and do the team things
and that worked quite well.”
However Bruce does have his eyes on bigger things
at the end of the season.
“Obviously to win a premiership, that’s why
we play footy and hopefully I keep developing
and continue on from where I left off
last year.”
RICE PLAYS 200
FOR HAWKS
James ‘Jimmy’ Rice booted up for his beloved
Tuggeranong Hawks for the 200th time on
Sunday afternoon.
The grand feat has only been achieved twice in
Tuggeranong history, with only Ben Funnell and
Luke Jess beating him to the milestone.
The Hawks went down 107-124 to arch-rivals
Queanbeyan Tigers at Dairy Farmers Park.
While not able to celebrate the occasion with a win,
Rice was still proud of his achievement
“I’ve been lucky that I played in Luke Jess and Ben
Funnell’s 200th first grade game. Its a great honour”
Rice, co-captain alongside Craig Healey, has been
a Tuggeranong boy his entire career, starting out
as a seven year old playing for the Tuggeranong
Bulldogs Junior Australian Football Club.
His first match for Tuggeranong Cowboys (now
the Hawks) was in 1994/5, and he has played
their ever since.
Rice said the initial excitement had worn off
from the match, but he felt the game had a
more serious edge to it than previous matches.
“Its good to have it out of the way...I was on
199 all summer”
On being announced captain for the season,
Rice said he was in great company
“...The captains of the football club have had great
AFL Canberra careers, like Luke Jess, Jay Kickett and
Stafford Cooper and some of the older guys such as
Kieran Johnson and Bob Hughes...its an honor to be
seen in the same light as those guys”
Unfortunately for Jim, the 200 gamer was unable
to celebrate his milestone as fatherly duty called
“It was a school night so I had to get my son home
to bed...in a few weeks when Jay Kickett plays
his 200th game we’ll probably catch up on the
celebrations then.”
FRESH BLOOD
WORKING
After suffering such a heartbreaking loss in last years
first division grand final, it would be easy to think it
would take the Belconnen Magpies some time to
re-group. However, new coach Brendon Read has
other ideas.
There have been sweeping changes at the club since
they lost by 1 point to the Sydney Swans Reserves. A
new first division coach has taken the helm, new players
have been introduced to the squad and a new fitness
coach has taken over the physical preparation of
the team.
Brendon Read has taken over as head coach this year,
and said the mood around the club was outstanding.
“Last years result was pretty disappointing for us as a
club. It was a bitter pill to swallow. But we have a pretty
Joel Diggins
AFL Canberra Record Journalist
new bunch of blokes at the club, and we haven’t really
spoke about the loss” he said.
The new blood has already showed it is working for the
Magpies, with a strong 45 point win in their round
one Grand Final re-match against Sydney.
“We have a few new guys joining us this year, a couple
of guys at university have joined, and those guys along
with the experienced players we have should give us
a good balance. Also with Ryan Winefield coming on
board as Strength and Conditioning coach, we are
leaving no stone unturned in our preparation for
the season” he said.
The Magpies take on the Tuggeranong Hawks
this week at Greenway Oval.
NO ADDED
PRESSURE FOR
Ryan Lewis has high hopes for on-field success this year
despite a round one loss against Eastlake by 86 points.
Having won the Mulrooney Medal in his first year
playing football in Canberra, Lewis has now been given
the Captaincy of Ainslie. Despite the Mulrooney Medal
and the Captaincy, Lewis says there is no added pressure
on him to perform.
“It won’t change how I play…I got a lot of attention
from the opposition in the second-half of last season
and I think that will stay the same.”
Lewis moved to Canberra last year not knowing anyone
and said that Ainslie Club President Ian Muir has made
him welcome and given him a strong sense of the
tricolours history.
“I love playing and training at Ainslie…it would be good
to get more fans to the games but we need to get more
on-field results.”
Having played in South Australia and the Northern
Territory, Canberra’s six team competition is different to
what Lewis has been used to, but he says that it makes
you work harder.
“Having a small competition makes it really tight, if you
don’t come to play then you will get rolled. You have to
be on your game every week.”
Lewis described the tricolours round one loss to Eastlake
as, “Shattering,” but he doesn’t want to be known as the
competition easy-beats.
“We have to be confident going forward…we have all
but two of the same players this year as last so we
know we can play better as a group.”
Ben Radisic
AFL Canberra Record Journalist
NEW AINSLIE CAPTAIN
NAB Cup Rules rushed into the 2009
Home and Away season
The following rules trialled during the
2009 NAB Cup and NAB Challenge Series
will be enforced from Round 1 of the
2009 AFL and AFL Canberra Seasons.
Deliberate rushed behinds
A Free Kick shall be awarded against a Player from the
defending Team who intentionally Kicks, Handballs or
forces the football over the attacking Team’s Goal Line
or Behind Line or onto one of the attacking Team’s
Goal Posts. In assessing whether a Free Kick should be
awarded under this Law, the field Umpire shall give
the benefit of the doubt to the Defender. A Free Kick
awarded under this Law shall be taken at the point
where the football crossed the Goal Line or Behind
Line or from the relevant Goal Post.
When an Umpire is determining whether to award
a free kick for a deliberate rushed behind the
considerations are:
• What is the player’s intention?
• Is the player contesting the ball?
• What is the degree of pressure the player is under?
• Was there a team mate in the vicinity of where
the ball crossed the scoring line?
For clarification:
• Players who are contesting the ball in a marking
contest or in general play may punch or knock the
ball away from their opponents to prevent them from
gaining possession of the football or from scoring.
This will not be deemed to be deliberately rushed.
• Where a player is in possession of the football and
is tackled near the scoring line, he must dispose of or
attempt to dispose of the ball in complying with the
laws of the game. A player will receive the benefit of
the doubt in this situation.
Free after disposal
Award a 50m penalty in addition to a free kick for
players who tackle or hold an opponent after the
opponent has disposed of the football for the purpose of
preventing them from taking part in the next act of play
or being able to run on to the next contest.
Rationale: A trend has recently emerged where players
are prepared to give away a free kick by putting an
opposition player down after disposing of the ball
to prevent them from running onto the next contest.
Currently only a free kick is awarded and this is
an insufficient deterrent.
CLUB NEWS
Ainslie Football Club Ainslie Football Club
Members and Supporters are invited to the after match function
following the Ainslie v Queanbeyan game to be held in the
Ainslie Football Club from 5pm. Presentations and awards
at 6pm.
The Tricolours coaching staff for season 2009 has undergone
minimal change with Tony Bourke coming in as the new Division
2 coach. Chris Rourke remains coach of the Division 1 side
assisted by Con Moraitis and Tony Bourke. Andrew Harrington
will assist with the Division 2 coaching. Malcolm Scholes will
again coach the U18s assisted by Brian James. Trevor Treloar will
once again coach the Division 3 side and the Ainslie Women’s
team has a new coach in Toby Treloar.
Round 1 saw the Tutt brothers play their first senior game
together for the Club. Ryan Tutt has rejoined Ainslie after several
years playing in Adelaide with Glenelg and Norwood. Ryan
played 21 games for Ainslie in seasons 2004 and 2005 as well
as gaining a place in the NSW/ACT Rams U18 team. Jason has
followed his brother by gaining a spot in the 2009 NSW/ACT
U18 Rams team. Ryan and Jason are the sons of Robert Tutt who
played Junior and Senior football with the Club. Their uncle Allan
also played both Junior and Senior football with Ainslie and was
part of the Senior Premiership sides of the eighties.
Queanbeyan Tigers Football Club
Don’t take the Tuggeranong Hawks easy should be the message
to all AFL Canberra Clubs. Their attack of the footy, excellent
disposal and quickness around the ground are all dangerous
components of a young and enthusiastic team who will upset
many a team during 2009. They certainly had the Tigers in
trouble last Sunday.
To the Tigers credit and after being behind on the scoreboard by
7 goals mid way through the second quarter, they fought back
to win a match played in scorching conditions and with only one
interchange player. It was a tremendous day for the club win
ning all three games in the opening round of the season.
classic match between two of the oldest clubs in the League.
The Tricolours have a wonderful history and no doubt they will
be out to atone for their first round loss against a powerful
Demons combination.
Last week, the Club helped Jim Rice celebrate his 200th
first grade game, but not with the result Jimmy was
hoping for. While results didn’t go our way but the
to be improved on. There were some good signs from
new recruits David Nolen and Grayson Stopp and with
Will Overs showing some of his better form.
The Hawks are hoping for a home ground advantage
this weekend against Belconnen in all grades and
Eastlake Football Club
It was a brilliant warm autumn day at Ainslie on
Saturday and it was a very pleasing start for all three
grades. Our U18 have had a very interrupted pre season
so it was good to see the players persist with team work
and improve as the game went on. Our reserves, despite
a strong Ainslie comeback in the third quarter, notched
up a solid win with a number of our new young players
from U18 at Eastlake and Marist showing great form.
Our seniors came to play from the first gong. Displaying
quick hands, great organisation around the contest and
relentless tackling the team had a very good day. We will
no doubt be reminded for some time about Collo’s left
foot snap in the last quarter!
Many thanks to Ainslie for their hospitality after the
game. This week our U18 take on the reigning premier
Marist in what should be a fantastic match and our
seniors are primed to take on the Swans. All of our
reserves players will be involved in activities at the club:
some will go to Sydney to assist the senior team whilst
