AMERICAN FREEMASONS (TABBERT) M10 (2)<br />
What exactly is Freemasonry? Why have three centuries <strong>of</strong> American men - - from<br />
Paul Revere and Ben Frankl<strong>in</strong> to Meriwe<strong>the</strong>r Lewis and William Clark, Harry<br />
Truman and Thurgood Marshall - - - have been drawn to its rituals and symbols, and<br />
precepts? And why did John Qu<strong>in</strong>cy Adams call it “a seed <strong>of</strong> evil, which can never<br />
produce any good? American Freemasons is <strong>the</strong> perfect <strong>in</strong>troduction to<br />
understand<strong>in</strong>g a society that, while shrouded <strong>in</strong> mystery, has played and <strong>in</strong>tegral<br />
role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lives and communities <strong>of</strong> millions <strong>of</strong> Americans and <strong>in</strong> American history<br />

Freemasonry has never lacked for detractors. Enemies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> organization have<br />

been denounced by popes and k<strong>in</strong>gs, by <strong>the</strong> ignorant5 and by those who felt<br />
threatened by <strong>the</strong> fraternity‟s reputation for secrecy. In this book Rob<strong>in</strong>son<br />
relates <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> attacks and takes on <strong>the</strong> anti-Masonic evangelists such<br />
as Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Dr. James Holly, and o<strong>the</strong>rs who currently want<br />

BLACK SQUARE AND COMPASS (WALKES) M90 1<br />
The only book I have read on this subject. It is well worth <strong>the</strong> read, if for no o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
reason than <strong>the</strong> historical aspects <strong>of</strong> this group <strong>of</strong> Freemasons.<br />
THE BOOK OF FATE (MELTZER) M19 1<br />
Ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> those, "You can't tell a book by its cover", problems. The "a" <strong>in</strong> "Fate is<br />
a square and compass. ipso nudnik, a book with a Masonic <strong>the</strong>me right? Wrong!<br />
<strong>No</strong> lengthy report is needed. <strong>the</strong> bad guy could have been any wacko <strong>of</strong>, pro<br />
environment, anti-thiev<strong>in</strong>g drug companies, pro-global warm<strong>in</strong>g, pro Choice if it<br />
means abortion - whatever.<br />
The story l<strong>in</strong>e did not need a Masonic "run". But, what <strong>the</strong> hey, which monkey's ass is<br />

The author br<strong>in</strong>gs Thomas Jefferson <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> mix as well but is on <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> those<br />
who deny he was a Mason. (S<strong>in</strong>ce no one has come up with any m<strong>in</strong>utes with his name<br />

BORN IN BLOOD (ROBINSON) M10 2<br />
Believed by many to be <strong>the</strong> book on <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Freemasonry. An absolute must<br />
for all Masons. Written by a man who was not a Mason but was later made one on<br />
his death bed by <strong>the</strong> Grand Master <strong>of</strong> Ohio Masons.<br />
BROTHER TRUMAN (ROBERTS) M10 1<br />
Bro<strong>the</strong>r Truman, Grand Master <strong>of</strong> Missouri Masons, soldier, President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
United States <strong>of</strong> America, a man with a philosophy anyone can emulate. He was a<br />
man who loved his family, his country. Politics per se do not enter <strong>in</strong>to this story. A<br />
great read.<br />
THE BROTHERHOOD (KNIGHT) M19 2<br />
If this is not <strong>the</strong> most virulent, deceitful book about Freemasonry or freemasons<br />
<strong>the</strong>n it will be <strong>the</strong> second. For <strong>in</strong>stance - it claims that Jack <strong>the</strong> Ripper was a Mason<br />
.The Italian section does not show that <strong>Lodge</strong> P2 was banned by its own Grand<br />
<strong>Lodge</strong> and by o<strong>the</strong>r Grand <strong>Lodge</strong>s. Should be read if for no o<strong>the</strong>r reason than to<br />
learn how far some will go to discredit <strong>the</strong> Fraternity<br />
THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE ROSEY CROSS (WAITE) M12.09 2<br />
Compared to <strong>the</strong> Freemasons with whom <strong>the</strong>y are sometimes confused, Rosicrucians<br />
seem like explorers at <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong> a mystery. The author makes a case for this<br />
order predat<strong>in</strong>g Freemasonry.<br />

THE FREEMASONS, A HISTORY OF THE WORLD‟S MOST POWERFUL SECRET SOCIETY<br />
(RIDLEY) M10 1<br />
The Freemasons by Jasper Ridley<br />
ISBN 1-55970-601-5, Arcade Publish<strong>in</strong>g Inc.<br />
The book starts out with <strong>the</strong> news that London Bridge was first built <strong>of</strong> wood, but<br />
gives no date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al construction or perhaps it is not known. It was<br />
destroyed <strong>in</strong> 1176. It was <strong>the</strong>n decided that <strong>the</strong> replacement bridge should be made<br />
<strong>of</strong> stone.<br />
The people made up a song about <strong>the</strong> new bridge titled “London Bridge is Fall<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Down”, The song centers about <strong>the</strong> FACT that sometime between 1176 and <strong>the</strong><br />
completion year <strong>of</strong> 1209 (About <strong>the</strong> same time as <strong>the</strong> Templars lost Acre) a young<br />
virg<strong>in</strong> (my fair lady) was placed alive <strong>in</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> columns and sealed up by <strong>the</strong><br />
MASONS as an <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g to God to get Him to stay His hand at ano<strong>the</strong>r destruction.<br />
It must have worked because when <strong>the</strong> bridge, 623 years later, <strong>in</strong> 1832, was<br />
dismantled it was only because none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> newer ships could get under its spans.<br />
<strong>No</strong> bones <strong>of</strong> any type were found and one could possibly be justified <strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that that should have put <strong>the</strong> matter to rest; however, some 800 years later, from<br />
1176 to as late as 1999, anti-masons still tell that tale as truth..<br />
From that po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> book th<strong>in</strong>gs cont<strong>in</strong>ue apace through <strong>the</strong> hatred <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Craft,<br />
through Chapters on <strong>the</strong> Heretics, Templars, French, German Masonry to <strong>the</strong> mideast<br />
and <strong>the</strong> “fact that <strong>the</strong> Templars” had noth<strong>in</strong>g to do with Freemasonry (which I<br />
personally do not buy for a m<strong>in</strong>ute) to a really great set <strong>of</strong> explanations <strong>of</strong> that<br />
sometimes rough and rugged road called Freemasonry that has been traveled by<br />
so many with so much <strong>in</strong>fluence on world events from <strong>the</strong> 1500‟s to <strong>the</strong> present<br />
day.<br />
Reach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> latter portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> book is well worth <strong>the</strong> wad<strong>in</strong>g through to<br />
reach <strong>the</strong> chapters on “The Assault on Masonry”, “Modern Masonry <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> World”,<br />
“- - In England”, “- - -In <strong>the</strong> United States”, etcetera.<br />
This is <strong>the</strong> first time I have been able to f<strong>in</strong>d a f<strong>in</strong>e collection <strong>of</strong> what I have know <strong>in</strong><br />
small pieces here and <strong>the</strong>re; that be<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>re has been a very small amount <strong>of</strong><br />
some real bastards who were able to slip <strong>in</strong>to Masonry. This is countered by<br />
literally millions <strong>of</strong> regular guys, as well as geniuses who rose to become <strong>the</strong><br />
f<strong>in</strong>est heroes <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> ages from 1500 unto <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ute you may be read<strong>in</strong>g this.<br />
Ridley does a great job on br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g both to light.<br />
“The Freemasons, A History <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> World‟s Most Powerful Secret Society” was<br />
written by a non-mason, as was “Born In Blood”. It is remarkable, but not very, but<br />
it appears, at least to me, that some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> better books on Our Craft were written<br />
by non-masons. Perhaps this is so because <strong>the</strong>y have no ox to be gored and can<br />
<strong>the</strong>refore present a fuller picture <strong>of</strong> Our Craft <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>, Hey guys, “I‟m more<br />
guilty than you all for were I to write a book on (m)Masons I would praise <strong>the</strong><br />

and Booker T.) Chrysler, Penny, L<strong>in</strong>dberg, Glenn, Grissom, Rickenbacker, Beard,<br />
Rickover, Jones (founder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lion‟s Clubs) Astor, Colt, Gatl<strong>in</strong>g, Hilton, Locke,<br />

to name a very few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> legions <strong>of</strong> many, but would gloss over, if not ignore <strong>the</strong><br />
likes <strong>of</strong> Benedict Arnold, FDR and his little buddy fellow traveler Henry Wallace,<br />
and toss <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> mix <strong>the</strong> likes <strong>of</strong> Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and, blessedly, only a<br />
few o<strong>the</strong>r rascals.”<br />
There are enough historically very large people who were and are Masons who do<br />
and have done so much to make better mank<strong>in</strong>d‟s passage through this veil <strong>of</strong> tears.<br />
One could spend several lifetimes keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m alive. Which br<strong>in</strong>gs me to ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
subject – with so many, why do some masons always have to toss <strong>in</strong>, “L<strong>in</strong>coln might<br />
have been, could have, been a Mason?” I th<strong>in</strong>k we have more than enough to go<br />
around. (Ridley handles this quite nicely, thank you very much.)<br />
The book is bound to up-set some masons (small m) but <strong>the</strong> rest (Large M) will enjoy<br />
it and appreciate its usefulness and is a good one for those who would like to know<br />
more about Masons. Well worth pass<strong>in</strong>g around to <strong>the</strong> family and friends<br />

FREEMASONS FOR DUMMIES (HODAPP) M00 1<br />
It is difficult to review this book because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> restrictions on “any reproduction<br />
is forbidden” etc. to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t that not one word can be<br />
transmitted via any system known to man. There is <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lists <strong>of</strong> “famous<br />
masons” some names that give me pause on how <strong>the</strong>y can call <strong>the</strong>mselves Masons<br />
while cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g to wreak havoc on <strong>the</strong> tapestry that forms our beliefs. That be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
said, <strong>the</strong> book is well written and does make it easy to understand that historical<br />
group known as Freemasons. Well worth <strong>the</strong> price and o<strong>the</strong>rwise a good read. In a<br />
Section <strong>of</strong> Military names I could add 17 names <strong>of</strong> U.S. Mar<strong>in</strong>es (I‟m work<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong><br />
Army, Navy and o<strong>the</strong>r lists) <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Bro<strong>the</strong>r Col. Samuel Nicholas who left his<br />

Cannon R. Lewis (not a Mason) speak<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> General Synod <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>of</strong><br />
England. “I am appalled, I am bound to say, by <strong>the</strong> unsolicited material that has been<br />

In Book 8 Chapter 2 we f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> accuracy <strong>of</strong> 3,300 Masters or Oversees <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
work, 80,000 Fellowcrafts or hewers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s or quarries and 70,000<br />
Entered Apprentices who were bearers <strong>of</strong> burdens. (They were not titled as noted<br />
here but <strong>the</strong>re were that many <strong>in</strong> each category). Those who were engaged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
work were not all Hebrews; many were “those who Hiram had sent”.The work<br />
began <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 4 th year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> Solomon on <strong>the</strong> 2 nd day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> month Zif (Our<br />
Cipher page 170).However, Josephus puts it thus, “Solomon began to build <strong>the</strong><br />
Temple <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fourth year <strong>of</strong> his reign, on <strong>the</strong> second month <strong>of</strong> Jyr (or Jur) which<br />
<strong>the</strong> Macedonians call Artemisius. [Present day April and May}.Whiston also makes<br />
note that Boaz and Jach<strong>in</strong> were no more that 18 cubits as noted <strong>in</strong> 1 Kgs. 7:15; 2 Kgs<br />
25:17; Jer. 3:21; those 35 cubits <strong>in</strong> 2 Chr. 3:15, be<strong>in</strong>g contrary to all rules <strong>of</strong><br />
architecture <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. While on <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two great pillars – <strong>the</strong>y<br />
were cast <strong>in</strong> brass 4 f<strong>in</strong>gers <strong>in</strong> breadth and <strong>the</strong>ir circumference was 12 cubits. So<br />
what does “four f<strong>in</strong>gers and 12 cubits” relate to today? 1 f<strong>in</strong>ger was 1/24 th <strong>of</strong> a<br />
cubit or .875 <strong>in</strong>ches (x 4) = 3.50 <strong>in</strong>ches. This means that <strong>the</strong> “hands breadth <strong>in</strong><br />
thickness” which be<strong>in</strong>g 1/6 th <strong>of</strong> a cubit or 3.5 <strong>in</strong>ches s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> thumb was not<br />
<strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> “hands breadth”. A cubit has been established as 21 <strong>in</strong>ches,<br />
<strong>the</strong>refore, 12 cubits x 21<strong>in</strong>ches gives us a total <strong>of</strong> 252 <strong>in</strong>ches or 21 feet. These<br />
were truly remarkable cast<strong>in</strong>gs for that time. [Though it, <strong>the</strong> measurements,<br />
probably varied s<strong>in</strong>ce it was based on <strong>the</strong> length from elbow to f<strong>in</strong>ger tip, and<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r body parts varied through <strong>the</strong> ages, <strong>the</strong> figure 21 <strong>in</strong>ches has been accepted<br />
through references to o<strong>the</strong>r writ<strong>in</strong>gs and comparisons to Greek and Roman<br />
12
measurements <strong>of</strong> that era. If you hold a different view – so be it]. <strong>No</strong>w as to where<br />
<strong>the</strong> Pillars were placed - Josephus says that <strong>the</strong>y were placed on <strong>the</strong> porch and <strong>the</strong><br />
one <strong>the</strong> right hand was called Jach<strong>in</strong> and <strong>the</strong> one on <strong>the</strong> left was called Boaz. He<br />
clarifies this by fur<strong>the</strong>r stat<strong>in</strong>g that right and left are as viewed from <strong>the</strong> East<br />
Gate, <strong>the</strong>refore, Jach<strong>in</strong> was on <strong>the</strong> South side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> entrance and Boaz was on <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>No</strong>rth side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> entrance. There is much more – I have not read <strong>the</strong> entire book as<br />
yet but hav<strong>in</strong>g gone through Gibbons‟ “Fall” [I guess I will get through this one<br />
some day. I get fasc<strong>in</strong>ated by <strong>the</strong>se types <strong>of</strong> references but time is - - - -.We read also<br />
read ”He also laid <strong>the</strong> floor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> temple with plates <strong>of</strong> gold”. [Tesselated or not<br />
it saith not].Our (Masonic) story is close enough to make <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t that it was a<br />
magnificent structure and Solomon did <strong>in</strong>deed separate <strong>the</strong> workers so <strong>the</strong>re was<br />
no strife or conflict; which is, <strong>in</strong> my op<strong>in</strong>ion, <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole th<strong>in</strong>g. Harmony.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Authors Preface (1994) “The discussion <strong>of</strong> moral arithmetic <strong>of</strong> Pythagoras is<br />
a gentle <strong>in</strong>troduction to <strong>the</strong> philosophic arithmetic <strong>of</strong> Theon <strong>of</strong> Smyrna and leads<br />
immediately to an <strong>in</strong>spir<strong>in</strong>g contemplation <strong>of</strong> universal mysteries. It also helps us<br />
to appreciate <strong>the</strong> debt that is owed to <strong>the</strong> wisdom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greeks and Egyptians, and<br />
<strong>the</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matical speculations <strong>of</strong> oriental sages. There is no way <strong>in</strong> which to more<br />

THE LOST KEYS <strong>of</strong> FREEMASONRY (Hall,) M10.11 1<br />
Manly P. Hall wrote and published <strong>the</strong> three works <strong>in</strong> this volume before he<br />
became a Freemason. Hall jo<strong>in</strong>ed Masonry <strong>in</strong> 1954, and was named and honorary 33<br />
Degree Mason <strong>in</strong> 1973. It is <strong>the</strong> highest rank Freemasonry can bestow. “I am happy<br />
to say that <strong>the</strong> admiration I had long held for <strong>the</strong> Masonic Order was <strong>in</strong>creased<br />
and deepened by a more <strong>in</strong>timate knowledge <strong>of</strong> its pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and a close personal<br />
communion with my Brethren. Freemasonry is a philosophy which is essentially<br />
creedless. It is <strong>the</strong> truer for it. Its bro<strong>the</strong>rs bow to truth regardless <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
bearer; <strong>the</strong>y serve light, <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> wrangl<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> one who br<strong>in</strong>gs it. In this<br />
way <strong>the</strong>y prove that <strong>the</strong>y are seek<strong>in</strong>g to know better <strong>the</strong> will and dictates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

THE MEANING OF MASONRY (PERKINS) M11 1<br />
The Author believes that many younger men now com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> want more<br />
rational and scientific answers that will enable <strong>the</strong>m to understand Masonry<br />
better; and, that this book may be <strong>the</strong> answer, or at least a start to get <strong>the</strong>m to<br />
read o<strong>the</strong>r works and thus ga<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>the</strong>y seek.<br />
THE MEANING OF MASONRY (WILMHURST) M10.11 2<br />
Freemasonry is based on <strong>the</strong> three great pr<strong>in</strong>ciples : Bro<strong>the</strong>rly Love, Relief, and<br />
Truth. Over <strong>the</strong> years, bro<strong>the</strong>rly love have been so stressed that <strong>the</strong> Craft is <strong>in</strong><br />
serious danger <strong>of</strong> becom<strong>in</strong>g primarily a social and charitable organization. Truth,<br />
<strong>the</strong> most difficult pr<strong>in</strong>ciple to recognize and thus <strong>the</strong> most difficult to achieve, has<br />
long been neglected. Wilmhurst carefully places his designs upon <strong>the</strong><br />
Trestleboard to build his <strong>the</strong>sis that <strong>the</strong> alpha and omega <strong>of</strong> Freemasonry is not<br />
<strong>the</strong> repetition <strong>of</strong> ritual nor <strong>the</strong> safeguard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> secrets, but <strong>the</strong> regeneration <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Brethren. A stunn<strong>in</strong>g book.<br />

faith, its wise and practical philosophy - unit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> wisdom <strong>of</strong> love with <strong>the</strong> love <strong>of</strong><br />
wisdom - illum<strong>in</strong>e my m<strong>in</strong>d as its genius <strong>of</strong> fraternity warms my heart.<br />
MESSAGES FOR A MISSION (CLAUSEN) M21.3 1<br />
This book gives mean<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> statement, “ The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scottish Rite, simply<br />
stated, is to seek that which is <strong>the</strong> most worth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world; to exalt <strong>the</strong> dignity <strong>of</strong><br />
every person. The human side <strong>of</strong> our daily activities, and <strong>the</strong> maximum service to<br />
humanity; to aid mank<strong>in</strong>d‟s search <strong>in</strong> God‟s universe for identity, for development<br />

MORE ABOUT MASONRY (HAYOOD) M10 1<br />
“Criticism is noth<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r than a man‟s free use <strong>of</strong> his own m<strong>in</strong>d over any given<br />
field or subject matter, and <strong>the</strong> concomitant freedom to report what he f<strong>in</strong>ds, and<br />
not to be penalized if what he f<strong>in</strong>ds proves (through no fault <strong>of</strong> his to be pa<strong>in</strong>ful or<br />
distress<strong>in</strong>g or distasteful to somebody else. . . . . .” “ There is no conceivable<br />
18
connection between criticism and fault-f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g-and a man‟s reason<strong>in</strong>g is faulty if he<br />
believes <strong>the</strong>re is. When a man lets his own <strong>in</strong>telligence play freely over any<br />
subject he is not search<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> faults <strong>in</strong> it but for <strong>the</strong> facts <strong>in</strong> it and <strong>the</strong> truths<br />
about <strong>the</strong>se facts; whe<strong>the</strong>r what he f<strong>in</strong>ds is good news or bad news depend on what<br />
he f<strong>in</strong>ds those facts or truths to be. Who is he to dictate <strong>the</strong> facts! Would he not<br />
be under <strong>the</strong> delusion that he is a god if he tried to make <strong>the</strong> facts be what he<br />
wishes <strong>the</strong>m to be! He reports what he f<strong>in</strong>ds. If a th<strong>in</strong>g is bad he says so; if a th<strong>in</strong>g is<br />
good he says so.” More way good stuff <strong>in</strong> this book!!!!<br />
MORMONISM AND MASONRY (GOODWIN) M19.43 1<br />
The first contact <strong>of</strong> Mormonism with Masonry predates <strong>the</strong> Nauvoo period by<br />
somewhat more than fifteen years. The author makes <strong>the</strong> case that <strong>the</strong> years which<br />
saw <strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> “golden Bible” <strong>of</strong> this new faith, also witnessed <strong>the</strong><br />
very material prenatal <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> Masonry upon Mormonism, pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> which lies<br />

Hall on Great Queen Street, right <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong> Soho, and requested permission<br />
to visit and read <strong>in</strong> its manuscript archives. The answer was a flat "no". Why?<br />
Because at that time <strong>the</strong> records were closed to all nonmasons. In response I<br />
po<strong>in</strong>ted out hat, unlike many European Grand <strong>Lodge</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> British one would not<br />
admit women as freemasons. Hence, with impeccable logic, I pleaded that <strong>the</strong> rule<br />
should not apply to me. They never answered that letter."<br />
I may be wrong but I have never heard <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GL<strong>of</strong>GB. I have only heard <strong>of</strong> The<br />
United Grand <strong>Lodge</strong> <strong>of</strong> England. I remember it well because only <strong>the</strong> Brits could<br />
come up with a name that reduced to <strong>in</strong>itials spells out UGLE.<br />
First: The author wrote <strong>the</strong> letter “<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1970‟s.” I went on l<strong>in</strong>e and found that<br />
<strong>the</strong>re were three (3) “<strong>Lodge</strong>s” built/re-built at <strong>the</strong> address cited. The orig<strong>in</strong>al, <strong>in</strong><br />
1717, was called <strong>the</strong> Grand <strong>Lodge</strong> <strong>of</strong> London; (later twice re-built).In 1813 it was<br />
given <strong>the</strong> name “United Grand <strong>Lodge</strong> <strong>of</strong> England”. In 1967 “over 6,500 Masons<br />
ga<strong>the</strong>red to celebrate <strong>the</strong> 250 th anniversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Grand <strong>Lodge</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
England”, and <strong>in</strong> 1992 “12,500 Mason ga<strong>the</strong>red to celebrate <strong>the</strong> 275 th anniversary<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Grand <strong>Lodge</strong> <strong>of</strong> England”. All on Great Queen Street, <strong>in</strong> Soho, <strong>in</strong><br />
London, <strong>in</strong> England; that last be<strong>in</strong>g a part <strong>of</strong> Great Brita<strong>in</strong>. I believe that that<br />
covers pretty much a time frame well before <strong>the</strong> 1970‟s and some 20 years after<br />
<strong>the</strong> 1970‟s so <strong>the</strong>re is no reason to believe that <strong>the</strong> Grand <strong>Lodge</strong> <strong>of</strong> Great Brita<strong>in</strong><br />
ever existed, especially s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> term “Great Brita<strong>in</strong>”, I have been taught,<br />
composes such places as Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Canada, Australia and some<br />
o<strong>the</strong>rs not needed so as not to belabor <strong>the</strong> subject. Why br<strong>in</strong>g that up you may well<br />
ask. Well, because each <strong>of</strong> those locations have <strong>the</strong>ir own Grand <strong>Lodge</strong>,<br />
20
ecognized by UGLE and <strong>the</strong> U.S. and some European/Middle East/Far East/South<br />
American and <strong>No</strong>rth American <strong>Lodge</strong>s as well.<br />
Second: I admit that it probably stra<strong>in</strong>s my testosterone driven m<strong>in</strong>d, logical or<br />
not, to understand impeccable logic. The words non-Mason is <strong>in</strong>clusive <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r or<br />
any sex. [A bit <strong>of</strong> PC <strong>the</strong>re]. A non-Mason is just that, a non-Mason. Whe<strong>the</strong>r some<br />
<strong>Lodge</strong>s admit women or not would have no bear<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> word non-Mason. To<br />
<strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong> thought that all <strong>Lodge</strong>s recognize each o<strong>the</strong>r is not true, but even if it<br />
were, <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong>fers no evidence that she is a member <strong>of</strong> any Masonic <strong>Lodge</strong><br />
anywhere <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> known world and <strong>the</strong>refore “entitled” under <strong>the</strong> mutual<br />
recognition rule, to be accepted as a Mason <strong>in</strong> good stand<strong>in</strong>g. And f<strong>in</strong>ally, let us<br />
suppose that <strong>the</strong> Grand <strong>Lodge</strong> <strong>of</strong> Great Brita<strong>in</strong> suddenly admitted women, so what?<br />
The author makes no claim to be<strong>in</strong>g a citizen <strong>of</strong> Great Brita<strong>in</strong> so what would be <strong>the</strong><br />
logic <strong>in</strong> allow<strong>in</strong>g a non-citizen a membership? Enough <strong>of</strong> that. But it is difficult to<br />
give authoritative weight to anyth<strong>in</strong>g that follows from <strong>the</strong> author.<br />
Page12: “We meet <strong>the</strong>m [The four <strong>Lodge</strong>s] only <strong>in</strong>1717 when <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Grand <strong>Lodge</strong> became known. [Why was 1717 a “magic number” for Masonry <strong>in</strong><br />
England? Perhaps it was because just prior to 1717 <strong>the</strong> first Hanoverian K<strong>in</strong>g<br />
ascended <strong>the</strong> throne <strong>of</strong> England – a throne that was <strong>the</strong>n legally forbidden to any<br />
Roman Catholic or spouse <strong>of</strong> a Roman Catholic? That act alone removed forever<br />
<strong>the</strong> very real threat to <strong>the</strong> Templars <strong>of</strong> any <strong>the</strong>n or future Pope through a Pope<br />
approved monarch (page 179 – Born In Blood) might be <strong>the</strong> reason for “- - - - - <strong>the</strong> few<br />
pieces we have about <strong>the</strong>m (<strong>the</strong> four <strong>Lodge</strong>s) before 1717.<br />
From this po<strong>in</strong>t we f<strong>in</strong>d ourselves squarely, if you will, <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> reason for <strong>the</strong><br />
book and why <strong>the</strong> <strong>Title</strong> needs revision. Shazam! We are led <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> reasons <strong>of</strong> why<br />
we should have women <strong>in</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong>to our Masonic <strong>Lodge</strong>s, as <strong>the</strong>y do <strong>in</strong> Europe with<br />
heavy lean<strong>in</strong>g on France as <strong>the</strong> star.<br />
Page 47: “We beg<strong>in</strong> this chapter with a paradox that has never been fully<br />
expla<strong>in</strong>ed. [Just wait, it will be] Why <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> eighteen century did an entire private<br />
society, a form <strong>of</strong> voluntary association---which is what <strong>the</strong> masonic lodges were--adopt<br />
all <strong>the</strong> customs, habits and forms <strong>of</strong> government? One standard explanation<br />
has been that because <strong>the</strong> lodges arose <strong>in</strong> England and Scotland <strong>the</strong>y simply<br />
imitated constitutional government. But that circular reason<strong>in</strong>g only begs <strong>the</strong><br />
question, <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g no explanation as to why this imitation happened <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />
place, [Wait for it] nor suggest<strong>in</strong>g any reason for <strong>the</strong> subsequent imitation or<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest that Freemasonry sparked on <strong>the</strong> Cont<strong>in</strong>ent. [Perhaps it is because it is<br />
what <strong>the</strong>y knew and desired to spread to protect those <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future. So what did<br />
<strong>the</strong>y know? They knew that “<strong>the</strong> ancient K<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>of</strong> Scots - - - -was based on <strong>the</strong><br />
mutual welfare <strong>of</strong> groups <strong>of</strong> people descended from common ancestors - - - was<br />
traditionally ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> Scots <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir capacity as <strong>the</strong> “common<br />
fa<strong>the</strong>rs” <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Community <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> realm. (They) were obliged to uphold Scotland‟s<br />
Written Constitution <strong>of</strong> 1320 <strong>the</strong> famous “Declaration <strong>of</strong> Arbroath” established<br />
at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Robert <strong>the</strong> Bruce. The Declaration represented (that) all <strong>the</strong> people<br />
(are) equal <strong>in</strong> status to <strong>the</strong>ir K<strong>in</strong>g. With <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> chief <strong>of</strong> chiefs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
clan system it was <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people to call him <strong>the</strong>ir “kith” (friend and<br />
relation); conversely it was <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g‟s privilege to call <strong>the</strong> people his “k<strong>in</strong>” (blood<br />
relatives). The Constitution underl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> nations right to have a k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
own choos<strong>in</strong>g and it confirmed that sovereignty rested with <strong>the</strong> people, not with<br />
Parliament - - - . (Gee – change k<strong>in</strong>g to president and parliament to congress and<br />
you have ???) Page 9, “The Forgotten Monarchy <strong>of</strong> Scotland –HRH Pr<strong>in</strong>ce Michael<br />
<strong>of</strong> Albany. So, some 400 years before <strong>the</strong> 1700‟s <strong>the</strong>y had? Naaaah - that can‟t be<br />
<strong>the</strong> answer; but what <strong>the</strong> hey, at least now you know where kith & k<strong>in</strong> came from.<br />
21
Ther are also a couple <strong>of</strong> throw away l<strong>in</strong>es about mix<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> races <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong>s<br />
but that doesn‟t seem to equal <strong>the</strong> thrust <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 120 pages on women <strong>in</strong> European<br />
Masonry. (I have already made clear <strong>the</strong> major reason for <strong>the</strong> so called lack <strong>of</strong><br />
mixture <strong>in</strong> some <strong>Lodge</strong>s.)<br />
I‟m not go<strong>in</strong>g fur<strong>the</strong>r with this as <strong>the</strong> balance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> book, 120 pages, relates to<br />
how women would make a favorable impact for <strong>the</strong> good on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong>s <strong>of</strong> today.<br />
Really. Like <strong>in</strong> Europe, especially <strong>in</strong> France. On <strong>the</strong> Cont<strong>in</strong>ent. I fail to understand<br />
people who should know better carp<strong>in</strong>g about how we should be more like <strong>the</strong><br />
Europeans. So let‟s compare Europe <strong>of</strong> today with <strong>the</strong> United States:<br />
1) Government spend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gross GDP <strong>in</strong> France and Sweden exceeds<br />
50%. Germany and Italy is more that 45%. Us - 36%<br />
2) Our per capita output <strong>in</strong> 2003 was $39,700.00 – Europe showed a 40% drop<br />
to $28,700.00<br />
3) Europe‟s unemployment <strong>in</strong> 2006 is averaged to 8% while ours average 4.7%<br />
4) From 1970 to 2006 we created 57 million new jobs while those we should<br />
emulate <strong>in</strong> Europe created 4 million new jobs dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same period<br />
5) European standard <strong>of</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g, when ranked, is equal to Arkansas and<br />
Montana and only slightly ahead <strong>of</strong> West Virg<strong>in</strong>ia and Mississippi.<br />
6) Average liv<strong>in</strong>g space <strong>in</strong> Europe – just less than 1,000 square feet. Our<br />
average is 1,875 square feet with poor people <strong>in</strong> at 1,200 square feet<br />
7) If we should be more like <strong>the</strong> Europeans how come 400,000 European<br />
science and technology graduates live <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S. European migration to<br />
<strong>the</strong> nation <strong>of</strong> at best uncultured misfits rose 16% dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 1990‟s<br />
8) In 1980 <strong>the</strong> foreign <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> this country was $127 Billion dollars.<br />
Today it stands at 4.6 TRILLION dollars. Almost 5Trillion <strong>of</strong> that comes<br />
from those <strong>in</strong> Europe who f<strong>in</strong>d our <strong>in</strong>vestment opportunities more likeable.<br />
It would appear <strong>the</strong>n that any suggestion that we be more like Europe<br />
simply means that we all should be poorer. (Excerpted from a column <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> OC Register by Walter E. Williams – one <strong>of</strong> my hero‟s.) As for me, – no<br />
thanks.<br />
As for admitt<strong>in</strong>g women <strong>in</strong>to our <strong>Lodge</strong>s, irrespective <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> European connection,<br />
what would be <strong>the</strong> advantage or specific ga<strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r than an <strong>in</strong>crease<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>come from dues?<br />
Let me f<strong>in</strong>ish this with a thought from Kropotk<strong>in</strong> from his “Spirit <strong>of</strong> Revolt,” “TO<br />
SATISFY THE DISCONTENTED WOULD BE ONLY TO CREAT NEW MALCONTENTS.”<br />

It is said that every war s<strong>in</strong>ce time began was caused by poor leadership. And, you<br />
can accomplish anyth<strong>in</strong>g IF you do not care who gets <strong>the</strong> credit. And,<br />
Enthusiasm/Drive MUST come from <strong>the</strong> top. And, Lack <strong>of</strong> knowledge by a leader is<br />
<strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> every failure. And, Leadership comes <strong>in</strong> only two sizes – Constructive<br />
or Obstructive. And, MY goals mean noth<strong>in</strong>g – OUR goals mean everyth<strong>in</strong>g. And,<br />
Ignorance is <strong>the</strong> most expensive th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re ever has been, is now, and always will<br />
be. And Lastly, There can be no dedication without education.<br />
If you do not believe even one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se “Ands” <strong>the</strong>n you need this book. In it you will<br />
f<strong>in</strong>d, paraphras<strong>in</strong>g, “The Body <strong>of</strong> Freemasonry” [or any o<strong>the</strong>r group] is: The bra<strong>in</strong><br />
and heart represent symbolism; Benevolence, <strong>the</strong> soul; History be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> flesh;<br />
Jurisprudence/Law are <strong>the</strong> muscles; The Bloodstream is it‟s philosophy and it‟s<br />
rituals it‟s skeleton.<br />
Sorry, [not really] but my personal belief that leaders are made not born is fully<br />
justified beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g on page 22. Fur<strong>the</strong>r, great ritualist make good Masters is as<br />
false as is great Masters are always good ritualists. However, a great Master<br />
understands <strong>the</strong> philosophy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ritual and <strong>the</strong>refore ensures that it is<br />
conferred <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> best possible manner for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>spir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> candidates<br />
