294 Appendix 3 Transparencies have certain advantages over exclusive reliance on the chalkboard. For example tables of data can be readily presented for discussion, diagrams of complex apparatus are easily shown to students, and molecular structure models are available as accurate drawings. And all of these items are available for repeat presentations if required. Transparencies can be used in a variety of ways. Thus the full content need not be revealed at once but portions may be covered with opaque material and exposed only when required. In other cases the content can be on a set of separate transparencies which in use are overlaid on each other in sequence. The transparencies can also be written on, or important portions highlighted with colour, by means of water-based fibre-tipped pens, and afterwards the transparency can be wiped clean for re-use. The storage of transparencies so that they are readily available for use needs to be properly organized. If each transparency is fixed to a cardboard mounting frame (using a pressure sensitive tape) they can be numbered on the frame and stored in an ordinary cardboard box in numerical order. Kept in this way a collection of a hundred transparencies can be handled with ease. Film loops A set of film loops is available to support the teaching of the course. Students nowadays are attuned to learning through visual media and a film loop can be a very effective learning aid. But to make its effect a film loop needs a suitable commentary and this is best done by the teacher developing his own from the commentary provided in the teaching notes with each film loop. In this way the commentary can be closely matched to the needs of the students. A suitable commentary makes some of the film loops prepared for the Nuffield 0 level Sample Scheme equally useful for the advanced course. When showing the advanced chemistry film loops it is desirable to use a projector with a 'still picture' device operated from a remote control switch (figure MA). This enables the film loop to be stopped for a discussion of picture content whenever required. The' still picture' device is also most useful when students wish to raise questions about particular details in a film loop.
