Charleen Austin of Lubbock is a notorious practical joker, so much so
that when she scratched a Texas Lottery ® $1 Million Extravaganza ticket and
saw a huge prize, Austin immediately started looking around for her friends,
thinking they’d slipped her a phony winning ticket in
their efforts to dish out some payback.
“I just knew my friends Mac and Linda were
somehow playing a joke on me” Austin said. “I didn’t
want to get out of the car jumping up and down
if they were capturing it with a camera.”
Austin purchased the ticket at the Raff and
Hall Family Park located at 3404 IH 27
in Lubbock, where she often shops. She
scratched the ticket while in her car.
Austin says her mind has been spinning,
already spending her prize a million
different ways in her head!
Robert W. Willingham of Dallas gets $22 from his wife every Tuesday
and Thursday to buy Mega Millions ® tickets and a soda. The third week in
September was no different, except that this time, the Mega Millions Quick
Pick ticket he bought had five of the six numbers selected in the September
21 drawing. Since Willingham also purchased the Megaplier ® , his ticket
was worth a cool $1 million!
As a result of where Willingham decided to hide the ticket, the prize got
even cooler—downright frosty, in fact.
“The banks were closed over the weekend and we couldn’t get to the
safe deposit box,” Willingham said. “So we put the ticket in a baggie
and stashed it in the icebox.”
On Sunday, Willingham had to go out
to tend to some errands, so his wife,
Vickie, got icebox duty. “I got to stay
home to guard the freezer,” she said.
“It was ok, though.”
Willingham says he’s going to
buy his wife something she
wants with his winnings.
“Vickie is getting a new
car,” he said. “We’re
going to save the rest
for a house project in
the future.”
Willingham bought the
ticket at Red Beer & Wine at
4218 W. Lovers Lane, Dallas.
Dale Slape of El Paso was with his son in the Country Boy Store #1 in El
Paso talking to the store clerks about their past winning experiences.
Slape decided to purchase a State Fair of Texas scratch-off ticket and then
went out to his car to scratch it. Slape scratched the top half, his son the
bottom half. His son told Slape he had won something. Slape glanced at
the ticket, and initially thought it bore a $50 prize. On closer examination,
he saw it was a $50,000 winner! The father and son
screamed, jumped out of the car and hugged each
other, then went
back inside the
store to share
their good news
with the clerks.
Slape could
only describe
the experience
as “unbelievable!” He said he would use
some of the winnings to help a friend pay for
a trip to Las Vegas to see a NASCAR race.
