A CHECKLIST OF THE VERTEBRATE ANIMALS

OF KANSAS

Third (Revised) Edition

GEORGE D. POTTS & JOSEPH T. COLLINS

INTRODUCTION

This publication is an update of the first (1991) and second (1999) editions

of our list of the standard common and current scientific names of all

vertebrate animals in the state. Kansas has 798 species of vertebrate animals

(Phylum Vertebrata) that either currently reside here, or at one time were

residents and are now extirpated. Some of these species are not native, but

have established breeding colonies in the state, or are deliberately introduced

on a regular basis for recreational or commercial purposes. Of the 798

vertebrate species in Kansas, 1 is a lamprey, 143 are ray-finned fishes, 30 are

amphibians, 89 are mammals, 14 are turtles, 53 are reptiles, and 468 are birds.

The 468 species of birds include many that do not breed in Kansas, which

skews their representation in our vertebrate fauna (with the exception of bats,

none of the other groups feature such transients).

The species listed below are those shown as current or past members of the

Kansas vertebrate fauna by Cross and Collins (1995, fishes), Collins (1993,

amphibians, turtles, and reptiles), Bee et al. (1981, mammals), and Thompson

and Ely (1989, 1992, birds), with modifications based on discoveries made since

those books were published. The common and scientific names used are from

Nelson et al. (2004, fishes), Collins and Taggart (2002, amphibians, turtles, and

reptiles), Baker et al. (2003, mammals), and the American Ornithologist’s Union

(1998 plus supplements, birds), with modifications based on published proposals

since those lists appeared. Common names are given first in the lefthand

column; scientific names in the righthand column are in alphabetical order. An

asterisk appears by the scientific name if that species is known to be non-native

to Kansas. Designation of endangered, threatened, or extirpated species is as

follows: T = threatened, either federal, state, or both; E = endangered, either

federal, state, or both; and X = extirpated.

In accordance with a ruling by the International Commission on Zoological

Nomenclature, the scientific names of taxa originally spelled with a ii-ending

retain that ending in this list; those originally spelled with a single i-ending retain

that ending. We plan to publish future editions of this checklist when appropriate,

and would appreciate learning of any errors, omissions, or misspellings.

The common names appearing in this list are those that have generally been

used in Kansas and nationwide for the last half century; as authors, our choice

of authoritative sources for these names was strongly influenced by this tradition.

*The Recent Kansas members of the Class Reptilia have traditionally been composed

of the lizards and snakes, and the turtles. However, the accumulation of evidence over

the past twenty years strongly suggests that turtles are more closely related to birds

(Class Aves) than they are to the lizard and snake group. Our classifications are

hierarchical (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, species) and try to reflect

the current hypotheses concerning the evolutionary relationships of the organisms they

attempt to arrange and name. With that in mind, it is impossible to recognize both the

Class Reptilia and the Class Aves in their traditional sense. Because the ornithological

community has not adopted a hierarchy that places birds in the Class Reptilia (see the

latest AOU Checklist and updates), we continue to recognize Aves and Reptilia at their

traditional ranking of Class, which necessitates the recognition of the Class Chelonia

(Turtles) and limits the Class Reptilia to include only the lizards and snakes, based on

current scientific evidence. We recognize that this may change in the future, but do not

feel it is appropriate for us to choose any other hierarchical arrangement until a

consensus is reached by the biological community worldwide.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Many colleagues have checked this list critically and offered much advice

in its preparation. In particular, we thank Steve Haslouer for help with the fish

list, Travis W. Taggart for help with the herpetofaunal lists, Chuck Otte and

Max C. Thompson for help with the bird list, and Elmer Finck for help with

the mammal list. Especially, we owe much thanks to Suzanne L. Collins, who

helped in proofing the final list, and caught many small errors that might

otherwise have crept into this publication. In addition, Jerry D. Choate read

the entire text and made helpful suggestions that improved the usefulness of

this booklet. Sponsors listed on the outside back cover of this booklet

generously underwrote printing costs for this publication, and to them we are

deeply indebted.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

GEORGE D. POTTS has been teaching and writing for thirty-five

years. He has taught high school science in Los Angeles and Wichita,

Kansas, and taught biology at Friends University in Wichita for

sixteen years. His favorite teaching assignments have been field

courses which have taken him and his students, not only throughout

Kansas, but to such diverse environments as the Ozarks, the Rockies,

and the Grand Canyon. He still teaches in the Environmental Studies

graduate program at Friends, and does consulting work in Environmental

Education. He has, for several years, coordinated the Outdoor

Wildlife Learning Sites (OWLS) program for the Kansas Department

of Wildlife and Parks. Often comparing himself to the coyote, another

Kansas generalist, Potts' broad interests range from paleoecology to

human ecology to literature on natural history. He co-authored (with

Bob Gress) Watching Kansas Wildlife: A Guide to 101 Sites and the Pocket

Guide to Common Kansas Mammals, and authored the Kansas chapter of

The Smithsonian Guides to Natural America: The Heartland.

JOSEPH T. COLLINS is adjunct herpetologist at the Kansas Biological

Survey, The University of Kansas, Lawrence, and adjunct curator of

herpetology at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, Fort Hays

State University, Hays, Kansas. After thirty years at the University of

Kansas Natural History Museum, he concluded his service there as

herpetologist and editor in 1997, and was granted emeritus status. He

has published extensively about Kansas wildlife; his titles include

Amphibians and Reptiles in Kansas (three editions), Fishes in Kansas (two

editions with Frank B. Cross), Natural Kansas, and Reptiles and Amphibians

of Cheyenne Bottoms (with Suzanne L. Collins). He also co-authored

the third edition of the Peterson Field Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians

of Eastern and Central North America. In 1996, the Governor of Kansas

officially proclaimed Collins The Wildlife Author Laureate of Kansas. He

currently teaches herpetology at Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas,

and is the director of The Center for North American Herpetology,

Lawrence.
