<strong>Enhancement</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Self</strong>-Recogniti<strong>on</strong><br />

People’s <strong>in</strong>ferences about <strong>the</strong>ir own traits and abilities<br />

are often enhanc<strong>in</strong>g. A series of experiments suggests<br />

that this enhancement extends to more automatic and<br />

perceptual judgments as well, such that people recognize<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own faces as be<strong>in</strong>g more physically attractive than<br />

<strong>the</strong>y actually are. In each experiment, participants’ faces<br />

were made more or less attractive us<strong>in</strong>g a morph<strong>in</strong>g procedure.<br />

Participants were more likely to recognize an<br />

attractively enhanced versi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>ir own face out of a<br />

l<strong>in</strong>eup as <strong>the</strong>ir own, and <strong>the</strong>y identified an attractively<br />

enhanced versi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>ir face more quickly <strong>in</strong> a l<strong>in</strong>eup of<br />

distracter faces. This enhancement bias occurred for both<br />

<strong>on</strong>e’s own face and a friend’s face but not for a relative<br />

stranger’s face. Such enhancement was correlated with<br />

implicit measures of self-worth but not with explicit measures,<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sistent with this variety of enhancement be<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

relatively automatic ra<strong>the</strong>r than deliberative process.<br />

P eople tend to evaluate <strong>the</strong>ir own traits and abilities<br />

more favorably than is objectively warranted.<br />

Although debate exists about <strong>the</strong> magnitude and exact<br />

nature of such biases across both <strong>in</strong>dividuals and cultures<br />

(He<strong>in</strong>e, Lehman, Markus, & Kitayama, 1999;<br />

Kwan, John, Kenny, B<strong>on</strong>d, & Rob<strong>in</strong>s, 2004; Sedikides,<br />

Gaertner, & Toguchi, 2003), a large literature documents<br />

<strong>the</strong> variety of clever ways <strong>in</strong> which people can<br />

create flatter<strong>in</strong>g images of <strong>the</strong>mselves (Dunn<strong>in</strong>g, 1999).<br />

Such self-enhancement effects are not simply m<strong>in</strong>dless<br />

attempts for people to “see” what <strong>the</strong>y want to see but<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r represent a more thoughtful—albeit biased—<br />

process<strong>in</strong>g of self-relevant <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong>. Ambiguous traits<br />

are def<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> ways that enable favorable self-evaluati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

(Dunn<strong>in</strong>g & Cohen, 1992). Negative stereotypes about<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs are selectively activated and applied to make <strong>on</strong>eself<br />

look better (Kunda & S<strong>in</strong>clair, 1999). Flatter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong><br />

about <strong>the</strong> self is accepted readily, whereas<br />

threaten<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> is evaluated more critically and<br />

ultimately derogated (Ditto & Lopez, 1992; Ditto, Munro,<br />

Apanovitch, Scepansky, & Lockhart, 2003; Ditto,<br />

Scepansky, Munro, Apanovich, & Lockhart, 1998). These<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r deliberate reas<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g strategies (Chambers &<br />

W<strong>in</strong>dschitl, 2004) are <strong>the</strong> tools that frequently enable<br />

people to form a more desirable image of <strong>the</strong>ir traits and<br />

abilities than reality might allow.<br />

We sought evidence <strong>in</strong> this research, however, for a<br />

more direct and potentially automatic versi<strong>on</strong> of<br />

enhancement, us<strong>in</strong>g a novel method to study biases <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> evaluati<strong>on</strong> of relatively objective self-relevant stimuli.<br />

In particular, we <strong>in</strong>vestigated whe<strong>the</strong>r people would<br />

show evidence of enhancement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> recogniti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own facial image. Do people recognize <strong>the</strong>mselves—<strong>the</strong>ir<br />

very own faces—as be<strong>in</strong>g more desirable than <strong>the</strong>y actually<br />

are? In additi<strong>on</strong>, are people more calibrated evaluat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> attractiveness of strangers about whom <strong>the</strong>y<br />

know relatively noth<strong>in</strong>g?<br />

We predicted that people would <strong>in</strong>deed show an<br />

enhancement bias <strong>in</strong> self-recogniti<strong>on</strong> based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

emerg<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>sensus that people’s automatic and <strong>in</strong>tuitive<br />

associati<strong>on</strong>s to <strong>the</strong> self tend to be objectively positive<br />

(see Koole & DeHart, 2007, for a review). People,<br />

for <strong>in</strong>stance, tend to like <strong>the</strong> letters <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own name<br />

more than letters that are not <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir name (Koole,<br />

Dijksterhuis, & van Knippenberg, 2001; Nutt<strong>in</strong>, 1985)<br />

and are faster to identify positive words and slower to<br />

identify negative words follow<strong>in</strong>g a self-relevant sublim<strong>in</strong>al<br />

prime than a self-irrelevant prime (Spald<strong>in</strong>g &<br />

Hard<strong>in</strong>, 1999). As a result of such positive associati<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

people tend to unknow<strong>in</strong>gly prefer jobs, spouses, and<br />

even grades that bear some resemblance to <strong>the</strong> self<br />

(Nels<strong>on</strong> & Simm<strong>on</strong>s, 2007; Pelham, Mirenberg, &<br />

J<strong>on</strong>es, 2002). Because lik<strong>in</strong>g tends to be used as a cue<br />

for familiarity, with liked o<strong>the</strong>rs be<strong>in</strong>g recognized as<br />

more familiar than disliked o<strong>the</strong>rs (M<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>, 2003), we<br />

reas<strong>on</strong>ed that such automatic lik<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> self would<br />

likewise bias recogniti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>on</strong>e’s own facial image. The<br />

more positive <strong>on</strong>e’s <strong>in</strong>tuitive and automatic assessment<br />

of <strong>the</strong> self, <strong>the</strong> more <strong>the</strong>y should recognize positively<br />

enhanced images of <strong>the</strong>ir face as <strong>the</strong>ir actual face. Such<br />

a bias should not, however, extend to relative strangers<br />

that do not provoke <strong>in</strong>tuitively positive assessments.<br />

People are <strong>the</strong>refore likely to be more calibrated when<br />

evaluat<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>rs’ images than when evaluat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own image.<br />

Such results—self-enhancement compared to both<br />

reality and evaluati<strong>on</strong>s of o<strong>the</strong>rs—would share many<br />

hallmarks of exist<strong>in</strong>g self-enhancement results. We<br />

believe, however, that such a bias <strong>in</strong> self-recogniti<strong>on</strong><br />

would not <strong>on</strong>ly be widely <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g but also scientifically<br />

important for at least three reas<strong>on</strong>s. First, selfenhancement<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> recogniti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>on</strong>e’s own image may<br />

represent a dist<strong>in</strong>ct form of self-enhancement, <strong>on</strong>e produced<br />

by relatively implicit or automatic psychological<br />

mechanisms ra<strong>the</strong>r than by <strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g list of deliberate<br />

<strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong>-process<strong>in</strong>g mechanisms. Visual recogniti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g facial recogniti<strong>on</strong>, is a textbook example<br />

of an automatic psychological process (Grill-Spector &<br />

Kanwisher, 2005), occurr<strong>in</strong>g rapidly and <strong>in</strong>tuitively<br />

with little or no apparent c<strong>on</strong>scious deliberati<strong>on</strong> (e.g.,<br />

Thorpe, Fize, & Marlot, 1996). As a result, enhancement<br />

biases <strong>in</strong> self-recogniti<strong>on</strong> should be correlated<br />

with automatic or implicit measures of self-worth that<br />

gauge such automatic associati<strong>on</strong>s to <strong>the</strong> self ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

than with explicit and deliberate measures of selfworth.<br />

This relati<strong>on</strong>ship with implicit measures would<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trast sharply with exist<strong>in</strong>g enhancement results that<br />

are related to explicit measures of self-worth (e.g.,<br />

Brown, 1986; Gramzow & Willard, 2006; Kobayashi<br />

& Brown, 2003) and suggest <strong>the</strong>re may be two relatively<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependent sources of self-enhancement. One<br />

source would be reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> automatic and implicit<br />

associati<strong>on</strong>s people possess about <strong>the</strong>mselves, and<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r would be reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> more explicit and<br />

deliberate attitudes people hold about <strong>the</strong>mselves that<br />

may distort <strong>the</strong> recruitment and evaluati<strong>on</strong> of ambiguous<br />

evidence. This research would <strong>the</strong>refore suggest that<br />

both automatic and c<strong>on</strong>trolled mechanisms can underlie<br />

objective self-enhancement. In so do<strong>in</strong>g, it would<br />

also advance <strong>the</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g and expand<strong>in</strong>g literature<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sequences and importance of implicit attitudes<br />

<strong>in</strong> general, and <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sequences and importance<br />

of implicit self-esteem more specifically.<br />

Sec<strong>on</strong>d, many exist<strong>in</strong>g self-enhancement biases<br />

emerge <strong>on</strong> relatively ambiguous stimuli that must be<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structed or recalled at <strong>the</strong> time of judgment—from<br />

<strong>on</strong>e’s relative stand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> ambiguous traits (Dunn<strong>in</strong>g &<br />

Cohen, 1992), to <strong>the</strong> quality of <strong>on</strong>e’s relati<strong>on</strong>ships<br />

(Murray, Holmes, & Griff<strong>in</strong>, 2004), to <strong>the</strong> lik<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>on</strong>e’s <strong>in</strong>itials (Koole et al., 2001), to <strong>the</strong> validity of selfthreaten<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> (Ditto et al., 2003). There is no<br />

easy method for objectively identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong>e’s true leadership<br />

ability, <strong>the</strong> true quality of <strong>on</strong>e’s romantic relati<strong>on</strong>ship,<br />

<strong>the</strong> actual attractiveness of <strong>the</strong> letter E, or <strong>the</strong><br />

true implicati<strong>on</strong>s of negative performance feedback for<br />

<strong>on</strong>e’s self-evaluati<strong>on</strong>. O<strong>the</strong>r research has dem<strong>on</strong>strated<br />

that people recall past behavior <strong>on</strong> objectively verifiable<br />

stimuli <strong>in</strong> a self-serv<strong>in</strong>g fashi<strong>on</strong> (such as prior SAT or<br />

GPA scores; Gramzow & Willard, 2006), but such<br />

results appear to stem from <strong>the</strong> effortful rec<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong><br />

of memory or deliberately exaggerated self-reports<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r than from a distorted percepti<strong>on</strong> of a stimulus<br />

that appears right before people’s eyes. <strong>Self</strong>-enhanced<br />

recogniti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>on</strong>e’s own face, <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trast, would<br />

emerge <strong>on</strong> a c<strong>on</strong>crete and verifiable feature of <strong>the</strong> self<br />

that most people see multiple times every day of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

lives. Few aspects about <strong>the</strong> self are more readily<br />

observable and objectively verifiable than <strong>on</strong>e’s own<br />

facial image. Never<strong>the</strong>less, top-down processes based<br />

<strong>on</strong> motivati<strong>on</strong>s, goals, or expectati<strong>on</strong>s have been shown<br />

to <strong>in</strong>fluence percepti<strong>on</strong> of objective and readily observable<br />

stimuli. In <strong>on</strong>e experiment, for <strong>in</strong>stance, participants<br />

judged <strong>the</strong> slope of a hill to be steeper when <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were encumbered by a heavy backpack than when <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were not so encumbered (Bhalla & Proffitt, 1999). In<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r, participants’ motivati<strong>on</strong>s to see a particular<br />

object <strong>on</strong> a screen led <strong>the</strong>m to actually perceive an<br />

ambiguous stimulus <strong>in</strong> a manner c<strong>on</strong>sistent with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

motivated desires (Balcetis & Dunn<strong>in</strong>g, 2006). These<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs are c<strong>on</strong>sistent with <strong>the</strong> “new look” approach<br />

to percepti<strong>on</strong> that has emphasized <strong>the</strong> ways <strong>in</strong> which<br />

top-down processes can <strong>in</strong>fluence what people “see”<br />

when <strong>the</strong>y look at <strong>the</strong> external world. This research<br />

would be <strong>the</strong> first with<strong>in</strong> this traditi<strong>on</strong> to look at how<br />

top-down processes can <strong>in</strong>fluence people’s percepti<strong>on</strong>s


of <strong>the</strong>ir very own image. It would <strong>the</strong>refore be <strong>the</strong> first<br />

to dem<strong>on</strong>strate that people, quite literally, see <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

as more desirable than <strong>the</strong>y actually are.<br />

Third, our experiments <strong>in</strong>volve hav<strong>in</strong>g people recognize<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves as well as a relative stranger and may<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore provide additi<strong>on</strong>al dem<strong>on</strong>strati<strong>on</strong>s that<br />

people’s evaluati<strong>on</strong>s of o<strong>the</strong>rs can be more calibrated<br />

than evaluati<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong>mselves. For <strong>in</strong>stance, people <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong>e set of experiments tended to overestimate <strong>the</strong> likelihood<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y would engage <strong>in</strong> a desirable behavior at<br />

some po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future, from buy<strong>in</strong>g a flower to benefit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a charity to vot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a U.S. presidential electi<strong>on</strong>,<br />

but were remarkably well calibrated when predict<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> behavior of a relative stranger (Epley & Dunn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

2000, 2006). The same results also emerged <strong>in</strong> predicti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

of relati<strong>on</strong>ship l<strong>on</strong>gevity, <strong>in</strong> which those <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

midst of a relati<strong>on</strong>ship were more miscalibrated (<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

predictable directi<strong>on</strong>) than were observers (see also<br />

Gagne & Lyd<strong>on</strong>, 2004). Similar miscalibrati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> this<br />

experiment would perhaps be even more <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

given that people so clearly have more exposure to, and<br />

experience with, <strong>the</strong>ir own image than <strong>the</strong>y do to o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

The miscalibrati<strong>on</strong>, however, does not come from <strong>the</strong><br />

lack of <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> about <strong>the</strong> self compared to o<strong>the</strong>rs but<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r from <strong>the</strong> positively distorted nature of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong><br />

and associati<strong>on</strong>s people have about <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y do not have about relatively unknown o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

We tested our ma<strong>in</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>ses—that people would<br />

show enhancement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> recogniti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>ir own facial<br />

image; that such enhancement would be correlated with<br />

implicit, but not explicit, measures of self-worth; and<br />

that people would not show such biases <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> recogniti<strong>on</strong><br />

of relative strangers—<strong>in</strong> three experiments us<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

morph<strong>in</strong>g procedure to create more and less attractive<br />

versi<strong>on</strong>s of participants’ own facial image. Participants<br />

were <strong>the</strong>n asked to identify <strong>the</strong>ir actual face out of a<br />

l<strong>in</strong>eup (Experiments 1 and 2) and that of a relative<br />

stranger and a close friend (Experiment 2), or to recognize<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own image from a series of distracters as<br />

quickly as possible (Experiment 3). We predicted that<br />

participants would recognize <strong>the</strong>ir own image as be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more desirable than it actually is, that this bias would<br />

also emerge for well-liked friends but not for relative<br />

strangers, and that people would also be faster to identify<br />

positively distorted images of <strong>the</strong>mselves than to<br />

recognize <strong>the</strong>ir actual image.<br />

EXPERIMENT 1: SELF-RECOGNITION<br />

Method<br />

Caucasian participants (N = 27, 18 female) posed for<br />

a photograph at <strong>the</strong> end of an unrelated experiment.<br />

The experimenter <strong>in</strong>structed participants to remove<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir glasses and facial pierc<strong>in</strong>gs and to pull back <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

hair if it fell <strong>on</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir faces. Participants were also<br />

<strong>in</strong>structed to form a neutral expressi<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> picture.<br />

These images were <strong>the</strong>n cropped and subjected to a procedure<br />

designed to systematically alter <strong>the</strong>ir facial<br />

attractiveness, namely, by morph<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir photograph<br />

with a highly attractive or unattractive face.<br />

In this averag<strong>in</strong>g procedure, participants’ facial images<br />

were morphed <strong>in</strong> 10% <strong>in</strong>crements (up to 50%) with a highly<br />

attractive or unattractive same-gender target face. The<br />

attractive targets (male and female) were composite<br />

images of several dozen faces (obta<strong>in</strong>ed at http://www<br />

.uni-regensburg.de/Fakultaeten/phil_Fak_II/Psychologie/<br />

Psy_II/beautycheck/english/durchschnittsgesichter/<br />

durchschnittsgesichter.htm), and <strong>the</strong> unattractive targets<br />

were <strong>in</strong>dividuals suffer<strong>in</strong>g from craniofacial syndrome<br />

(obta<strong>in</strong>ed at http://www.craniofacial.net/). This morph<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was d<strong>on</strong>e by match<strong>in</strong>g up po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> participants’ face<br />

with <strong>the</strong> identical po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> target’s face (corners of<br />

mouth, shape of eyes, etc.). A 50% morph with <strong>the</strong><br />

attractive target would <strong>the</strong>refore represent a face that was<br />

halfway between <strong>the</strong>ir own and <strong>the</strong> target’s <strong>on</strong> all of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

critical po<strong>in</strong>ts. This procedure produced 11 faces, 5 morphed<br />

with <strong>the</strong> attractive target (up to 50%), 5 morphed<br />

with <strong>the</strong> unattractive target, and <strong>the</strong> actual photograph<br />

(see Figure 1). 1<br />

Participants returned 2 to 4 weeks after tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

photograph, were seated at a computer, rem<strong>in</strong>ded of <strong>the</strong><br />

photograph taken several weeks earlier, and told that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y would be presented with a series of images modified<br />

from <strong>the</strong>ir orig<strong>in</strong>al picture. Participants were <strong>the</strong>n<br />

presented with a randomly ordered l<strong>in</strong>eup c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g all<br />

11 faces and asked to identify <strong>the</strong>ir actual image by<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g to it <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> computer screen. We def<strong>in</strong>ed actual<br />

image to participants as <strong>the</strong> image taken of <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

prior sessi<strong>on</strong>. This served as our primary measure of<br />

self-recogniti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Participants <strong>the</strong>n completed a sec<strong>on</strong>d recogniti<strong>on</strong><br />

measure <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y were shown each picture <strong>in</strong> isolati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> computer screen (<strong>in</strong> a random order) and<br />

asked to estimate <strong>the</strong> likelihood that each image was<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir actual image, <strong>on</strong> a scale rang<strong>in</strong>g from 0% (not at<br />

all likely) to 100% (certa<strong>in</strong>). F<strong>in</strong>ally, participants were<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> shown each imag<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> isolati<strong>on</strong> (<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same random<br />

order) and asked to <strong>in</strong>dicate how much <strong>the</strong>y liked<br />

each image <strong>on</strong> a scale rang<strong>in</strong>g from –5 (bad) to 5<br />

(good).<br />

Participants next completed an implicit measure of<br />

self-worth (Spald<strong>in</strong>g & Hard<strong>in</strong>, 1999) <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were asked to classify words as positive or negative follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sublim<strong>in</strong>al (15 ms) presentati<strong>on</strong>s of self-relevant<br />

(me, myself) or self-irrelevant (two, manner) primes (see<br />

also Hetts, Sakuma, & Pelham, 1999). The extent to<br />

which self-relevant primes, compared to irrelevant primes,

speeds <strong>the</strong> identificati<strong>on</strong> of positive words and slows<br />

identificati<strong>on</strong> of negative words is taken as an <strong>in</strong>dex of<br />

implicit self-worth. Participants <strong>the</strong>n completed <strong>the</strong> standard<br />

measure of explicit self-esteem—<strong>the</strong> Rosenberg<br />

(1965) <strong>Self</strong>-Esteem scale—and a sec<strong>on</strong>d measure of<br />

implicit self-esteem—<strong>the</strong> name-letter effect (Nutt<strong>in</strong>,<br />

1985). Lik<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong>e’s own <strong>in</strong>itials more than different <strong>in</strong>itials,<br />

compared to o<strong>the</strong>rs with different <strong>in</strong>itials, is taken as<br />

a measure of implicit self-esteem (see Baccus, Baldw<strong>in</strong>, &<br />

Packer, 2004, for a descripti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> scor<strong>in</strong>g procedure).<br />

We collected two measures of implicit self-esteem, because<br />

of a lack of an accepted standard, to collapse <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to a<br />

more reliable composite measure of <strong>the</strong> underly<strong>in</strong>g latent<br />

variable (Cunn<strong>in</strong>gham, Preacher, & Banaji, 2001).<br />

Results<br />

All relevant means and correlati<strong>on</strong>s for this experiment<br />

are presented <strong>in</strong> Table 1.<br />

Face recogniti<strong>on</strong> and self-esteem. As predicted, participants<br />

tended to select <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> faces morphed with<br />

an attractive target as <strong>the</strong>ir own out of <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>eup more<br />

often than faces morphed with an unattractive target,<br />

t(26) = 2.63, p = .02, d = 1.01. A frequency distributi<strong>on</strong><br />

for this measure is presented <strong>in</strong> Figure 2.<br />

To help identify <strong>the</strong> source of this bias <strong>in</strong> self-recogniti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

we correlated <strong>the</strong> image participants recognized as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own with <strong>the</strong> implicit and explicit measures of selfworth.<br />

Because <strong>the</strong> two measures of implicit self-esteem<br />

were significantly correlated with each o<strong>the</strong>r, r(25) =<br />

.52, p = .01, we standardized each measure and <strong>the</strong>n<br />

averaged <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to a s<strong>in</strong>gle composite measure. As predicted,<br />

participants’ self-recogniti<strong>on</strong> was significantly<br />

correlated with <strong>the</strong> composite measure of implicit selfesteem,<br />

r(25) = .47, p = .01, but nei<strong>the</strong>r positively nor significantly<br />

correlated with explicit self-esteem, r(25) =<br />

–.26, p = .19. The str<strong>on</strong>ger participants’ automatic

positive associati<strong>on</strong>s to <strong>the</strong> self (<strong>in</strong>dexed by implicit selfesteem)<br />

was, <strong>the</strong> more enhanced an image participants<br />

recognized as <strong>the</strong>ir own.<br />

Likelihood and lik<strong>in</strong>g. Participants’ rat<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong><br />

likelihood that each face, rated <strong>in</strong> isolati<strong>on</strong>, was <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own showed <strong>the</strong> same c<strong>on</strong>ceptual pattern as <strong>the</strong> selfrecogniti<strong>on</strong><br />

measure already reported, with participants<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> more desirable morphs were more<br />

likely to be <strong>the</strong>ir own. As can be seen <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> top panel of<br />

shifted toward <strong>the</strong> attractive morphs. Participants <strong>in</strong>dicated<br />

that <strong>the</strong> 20% attractive morph, for <strong>in</strong>stance, was<br />

most likely to be <strong>the</strong>ir own (M = 65.93%, SD = 20.24),<br />

a figure significantly higher than <strong>the</strong> likelihood rat<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

for <strong>the</strong>ir actual image (M = 54.07%, SD = 26.93), paired<br />

t(26) = 2.17, p = .04, d = .85. The average estimated likelihood<br />

assigned to <strong>the</strong> five attractive morphs was significantly<br />

higher (M = 36.15, SD = 15.23) than that assigned<br />

to <strong>the</strong> five unattractive morphs (M = 19.56, SD = 12.48),<br />

paired t(26) = 6.06, p < .001, d = 2.38.<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong> to mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se likelihood estimates, participants<br />

also saw each image <strong>in</strong> isolati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>in</strong>dicated<br />

how much <strong>the</strong>y liked each image. As can be seen <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

bottom panel of Figure 3, participants tended to like <strong>the</strong><br />

images morphed with <strong>the</strong> attractive faces more than<br />

those morphed with <strong>the</strong> unattractive faces. More important,<br />

<strong>the</strong> average correlati<strong>on</strong> for each participant<br />

between <strong>the</strong>se likelihood and lik<strong>in</strong>g rat<strong>in</strong>gs was significantly<br />

positive (M = .42, SD = .30), t(26) = 7.38, p <<br />

.001, d = 2.89, as was <strong>the</strong> overall correlati<strong>on</strong> across participants<br />

between <strong>the</strong> average likelihood estimate<br />

assigned to each of <strong>the</strong> 11 images and <strong>the</strong> average lik<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of those images, r(26) = .58, p < .001. These results are<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sistent with our proposed mechanism that automatic<br />

lik<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>on</strong>e’s image is used as a guide for selfrecogniti<strong>on</strong><br />

and are c<strong>on</strong>sistent with <strong>the</strong> significant


implicit self-esteem correlati<strong>on</strong> observed <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> direct<br />

self-recogniti<strong>on</strong> measure.<br />

Discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

As predicted, participants tended to recognize <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own facial image as be<strong>in</strong>g more desirable than it actually<br />

was. What is more, this bias was correlated with<br />

implicit measures of self-worth <strong>in</strong> two procedures, but it<br />

was not correlated with explicit measures of self-worth.<br />

This suggests that automatic positive associati<strong>on</strong>s to <strong>the</strong><br />

self guide <strong>the</strong> enhancement observed <strong>in</strong> this experiment<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r than more deliberate and c<strong>on</strong>trolled assessments<br />

of <strong>the</strong> self, a f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g fur<strong>the</strong>r corroborated by <strong>the</strong> significant<br />

relati<strong>on</strong>ship between assessed likelihood that an<br />

image is <strong>on</strong>e’s own and lik<strong>in</strong>g for that image.<br />

Although c<strong>on</strong>sistent with our hypo<strong>the</strong>ses, readers<br />

might be c<strong>on</strong>cerned that this experiment used participants’<br />

actual photograph ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong>ir mirror image,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y may enterta<strong>in</strong> alternative <strong>in</strong>terpretati<strong>on</strong>s of our<br />

results based <strong>on</strong> this feature (Mita, Dermer, & Knight,<br />

1977). We see no <strong>the</strong>oretical reas<strong>on</strong> to expect this to be<br />

an important boundary c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> for self-enhanced<br />

recogniti<strong>on</strong>. To exam<strong>in</strong>e this generalizability directly, we<br />

simply c<strong>on</strong>ducted a small follow-up with 15 participants<br />

from <strong>the</strong> University of Chicago us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir mirror<br />

image <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same morph<strong>in</strong>g procedure described <strong>in</strong><br />

Experiment 1. As before (see Table 1), participants<br />

tended to select an enhanced image as <strong>the</strong>ir own actual<br />

image, t(14) = 2.36, p = .03, d = 1.26, with an effect size<br />

very similar to that observed <strong>in</strong> Experiment 1 <strong>on</strong> this<br />

procedure. This image selecti<strong>on</strong> was aga<strong>in</strong> positively<br />

correlated (with similar effect size, but n<strong>on</strong>significantly<br />

given <strong>the</strong> smaller sample size) with <strong>the</strong> composite measure<br />

of implicit self-esteem, r(12) = .40, p = .15, but not<br />

with explicit self-esteem, r(12) = .11, p = .71 (see Table<br />

1 for all relevant means and correlati<strong>on</strong>s for this experiment).<br />

Us<strong>in</strong>g participants’ actual photograph ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

than <strong>the</strong>ir mirror image does not seem to expla<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

results of Experiment 1.<br />

EXPERIMENT 2: FRIENDS AND STRANGERS<br />

One hallmark of enhancement biases is that <strong>on</strong>e’s<br />

close friends and relatives get caught up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> act as<br />

well. People <strong>in</strong> satisfy<strong>in</strong>g relati<strong>on</strong>ships, for <strong>in</strong>stance, rate<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir romantic partners more favorably than those very<br />

partners rate <strong>the</strong>mselves (Murray et al., 2004) and<br />

sometimes even rate <strong>the</strong>ir friends more desirably than<br />

people rate <strong>the</strong>mselves (Kenny & Kashy, 1994). Given<br />

such f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs for liked o<strong>the</strong>rs, we expected that <strong>the</strong> patterns<br />

of enhancement <strong>in</strong> recogniti<strong>on</strong> we observed <strong>in</strong><br />

Experiment 1 would not be restricted just to <strong>on</strong>e’s own<br />

image, but would extend to close friends as well. It<br />

should not, however, extend to relative strangers. We<br />

tested this predicti<strong>on</strong> directly <strong>in</strong> Experiment 2.<br />

Method<br />

Harvard University undergraduates (N = 24, 17<br />

female) participated <strong>in</strong> exchange for course credit. As<br />

part of an unrelated study, participants were asked to<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g al<strong>on</strong>g a close friend. This two-part experiment<br />

was c<strong>on</strong>ducted by three experimenters, <strong>on</strong>e male and<br />

<strong>on</strong>e female <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first sessi<strong>on</strong> and a new female experimenter<br />

for <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d sessi<strong>on</strong>. Participants completed<br />

this experiment <strong>in</strong>dividually (each participant completed<br />

<strong>the</strong> first part with ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> male or female<br />

experimenter and <strong>the</strong>n f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>the</strong> study with <strong>the</strong><br />

rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g experimenter). At <strong>the</strong> end of this unrelated<br />

experiment, participants posed for a photograph<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st a white wall. Photographs of both participants<br />

as well as both experimenters were <strong>the</strong>n morphed us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> averag<strong>in</strong>g procedure described for Experiment 1.<br />

Participants were <strong>in</strong>vited to return to <strong>the</strong> lab al<strong>on</strong>e 3<br />

to 4 weeks later by a new experimenter. In this sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

sessi<strong>on</strong>, participants completed <strong>the</strong> same recogniti<strong>on</strong><br />

procedure used <strong>in</strong> Experiment 1 for <strong>the</strong>ir own image,<br />

for <strong>the</strong>ir friend’s image, and for both of <strong>the</strong> experimenters’<br />

images’ (<strong>in</strong> random order). F<strong>in</strong>ally, participants<br />

completed <strong>the</strong> three self-esteem measures from<br />

Experiment 1.<br />

Results<br />

Because of computer malfuncti<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> composite<br />

self-esteem scores for 2 participants are based <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> name-letter measure.<br />

As can be seen <strong>in</strong> Table 1, participants showed evidence<br />

of enhancement when identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

image, t(23) = 4.12, p < .001, d = 1.72, as well as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

friend’s image, ts(23) = 2.69, p = .01, d = 1.12, but not<br />

when identify<strong>in</strong>g ei<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> experimenters’ images,<br />

both ts < 1. Averag<strong>in</strong>g across <strong>the</strong> two experimenters’<br />

images, this difference across targets was reliable, F(2,<br />

20) = 3.65, p = .04, η 2 = .27. Follow-up c<strong>on</strong>trasts<br />

revealed that <strong>the</strong> observed recogniti<strong>on</strong> bias did not differ<br />

between self and friend, F < 1; was significantly different<br />

between self and <strong>the</strong> average of <strong>the</strong><br />

experimenters’ images, F(1, 21) = 5.47, p = .03, η 2 =<br />

.21; and was marg<strong>in</strong>ally significant between <strong>the</strong> friend’s<br />

image and <strong>the</strong> average of <strong>the</strong> experimenters’ images,<br />

F(1, 21) = 3.95, p = .06, η 2 = .16.<br />

As <strong>in</strong> Experiment 1, self-enhancement was significantly<br />

correlated with <strong>the</strong> composite measure of implicit<br />

self-esteem, r(19) = .53, p < .01, but not with explicit<br />

self-esteem, r(19) = –.03, ns. Given that <strong>the</strong> self was <strong>the</strong><br />

target of <strong>the</strong>se measures (ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> friend or <strong>the</strong>

experimenters), it is not surpris<strong>in</strong>g that nei<strong>the</strong>r implicit<br />

nor explicit measures of self-esteem correlated systematically<br />

with enhancement of <strong>on</strong>e’s friend or <strong>the</strong> experimenters<br />

(ps > .4).<br />

Discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

Experiment 2 aga<strong>in</strong> provides support for our ma<strong>in</strong> predicti<strong>on</strong><br />

that people would show evidence of an enhancement<br />

bias <strong>in</strong> self-recogniti<strong>on</strong>, a bias that was related to<br />

implicit or automatic measures of self-worth ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

to explicit or deliberate measures. Experiment 2 also<br />

dem<strong>on</strong>strates that such enhancement bias extends to<br />

familiar and liked o<strong>the</strong>rs as well, <strong>in</strong> this case to <strong>on</strong>e’s close<br />

friends, but does not extend to unfamiliar strangers.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>sistent with o<strong>the</strong>r exist<strong>in</strong>g research, participants<br />

tended to show evidence of enhancement when evaluat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir close friends to <strong>the</strong> same extent as when evaluat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves (Kenny & Kashy, 1994).<br />

There is <strong>on</strong>e lower level ambiguity that this experiment<br />

does not completely address, namely, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong><br />

enhancement <strong>in</strong> recogniti<strong>on</strong> observed <strong>in</strong> this experiment<br />

was due to lik<strong>in</strong>g or familiarity. People tend to like both<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong>ir friends, but <strong>the</strong>y are also more<br />

familiar with both <strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong>ir friends (compared<br />

to strangers). These two variables are close travel<strong>in</strong>g<br />

compani<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> daily life, as people tend to feel<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are familiar with liked o<strong>the</strong>rs (M<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>, 2003) and<br />

simple exposure to o<strong>the</strong>rs tends to <strong>in</strong>crease lik<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(Moreland & Zaj<strong>on</strong>c, 1982). Although <strong>the</strong> simple comparis<strong>on</strong><br />

between friends and strangers <strong>in</strong> this experiment<br />

cannot dist<strong>in</strong>guish between <strong>the</strong>se two mechanistic<br />

accounts, <strong>the</strong> relati<strong>on</strong>ship between implicit self-esteem<br />

and self-recogniti<strong>on</strong> clearly suggests that lik<strong>in</strong>g is play<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a larger role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> effects observed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se experiments<br />

than simple familiarity (see also Note 1).<br />

Exist<strong>in</strong>g research dem<strong>on</strong>strates that <strong>the</strong> positive associati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<strong>in</strong>dexed by <strong>the</strong>se implicit self-esteem measures are<br />

more than simple measures of exposure or familiarity, and<br />

<strong>in</strong>stead <strong>in</strong>dex favorable c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>ed associati<strong>on</strong>s toward a<br />

target (<strong>in</strong> this case, toward <strong>the</strong> self; Baccus et al., 2004;<br />

Dijksterhuis, 2004; J<strong>on</strong>es, Pelham, Mirenberg, & Hetts,<br />

2002). Dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> impact of familiarity versus lik<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> enhanced recogniti<strong>on</strong> for o<strong>the</strong>rs would require measur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

automatic evaluative associati<strong>on</strong>s to <strong>the</strong>se o<strong>the</strong>rs or<br />

identify<strong>in</strong>g targets that are equivalent <strong>in</strong> terms of lik<strong>in</strong>g<br />

but vary <strong>in</strong> familiarity or who vary <strong>in</strong> lik<strong>in</strong>g but are equal<br />

<strong>in</strong> familiarity. The self-recogniti<strong>on</strong> results from <strong>the</strong>se<br />

experiments, and <strong>the</strong>ir relati<strong>on</strong> to implicit measures of<br />

self-worth, suggest that implicitly disliked targets, for<br />

<strong>in</strong>stance, should show evidence of derogati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> recogniti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Indeed, <strong>on</strong>e recent experiment us<strong>in</strong>g a procedure<br />

nearly identical to Experiment 2 showed that people<br />

who tend to dislike <strong>the</strong>mselves—namely, those with body<br />

dysmorphic disorder—tend to recognize <strong>the</strong>mselves as<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g less attractive than <strong>the</strong>y actually are (Clerk<strong>in</strong> &<br />

Teachman, <strong>in</strong> press). Whe<strong>the</strong>r implicitly disliked targets<br />

show evidence for negative distorti<strong>on</strong> is an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

avenue for fur<strong>the</strong>r research and may shed light <strong>on</strong> likely<br />

sources of variability and boundary c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for recogniti<strong>on</strong><br />

biases <strong>in</strong> judgment.<br />

EXPERIMENT 3: SPEED OF RECOGNITION<br />

Although we f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence of familiarity <strong>on</strong><br />

recogniti<strong>on</strong> biases to be <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g, we felt it more prudent<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> scope of <strong>the</strong> present research to provide<br />

str<strong>on</strong>ger evidence for <strong>the</strong> phenomen<strong>on</strong> of enhanced selfrecogniti<strong>on</strong><br />

itself. In particular, all of <strong>the</strong> results presented<br />

thus far have relied <strong>on</strong> self-reported recogniti<strong>on</strong><br />

as an <strong>in</strong>dex of actual recogniti<strong>on</strong>. People are will<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

report that an attractively enhanced image is truly <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own, but we sought more evidence <strong>in</strong> Experiment 3 that<br />

people truly believe what <strong>the</strong>y report. Although such<br />

self-report biases would not expla<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pattern of correlati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

with implicit and explicit self-esteem, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

might serve as an alternative account for <strong>the</strong> overall<br />

enhancement bias observed <strong>in</strong> self-recogniti<strong>on</strong>. In particular,<br />

we sought evidence for self-enhancement from a<br />

less reactive measure that uses <strong>the</strong> speed with which<br />

people can identify an image as an <strong>in</strong>dicati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

recogniti<strong>on</strong>. In this experiment we asked participants to<br />

identify, as quickly as possible, <strong>the</strong>ir own, an attractively<br />

enhanced, or an unattractively enhanced photo of<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves out of a series of l<strong>in</strong>eups composed of distracter<br />

faces. We reas<strong>on</strong>ed that people would recognize<br />

a face that <strong>the</strong>y truly believed to be <strong>the</strong>ir own more<br />

quickly than a face that <strong>the</strong>y did not truly believe was<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own. Given <strong>the</strong> results of Experiments 1 and 2, we<br />

predicted a l<strong>in</strong>ear trend—that participants would identify<br />

<strong>the</strong> attractively enhanced versi<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> fastest, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

actual image more slowly, and <strong>the</strong>ir unattractively<br />

altered versi<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> slowest.<br />

This new methodology also allows us to test <strong>the</strong><br />

plausibility of an alternative <strong>in</strong>terpretati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> results<br />

of Experiments 1 and 2 based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> similarity between<br />

<strong>the</strong> extreme targets used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morph<strong>in</strong>g procedure and<br />

participants’ actual faces. In particular, it is possible that<br />

participants’ actual faces resemble <strong>the</strong> highly attractive<br />

target more than <strong>the</strong>y resemble <strong>the</strong> highly unattractive<br />

target. If <strong>on</strong>e’s actual image is more similar to <strong>the</strong> attractive<br />

morph than it is to <strong>the</strong> unattractive morph, <strong>the</strong> range<br />

of morphs produced with <strong>the</strong> attractive target may simply<br />

be smaller than <strong>the</strong> range produced with <strong>the</strong> unattractive<br />

target. Any error <strong>in</strong> recogniti<strong>on</strong> is <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

likely to lead to biased resp<strong>on</strong>ses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> directi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong><br />

attractive target. This alternative <strong>in</strong>terpretati<strong>on</strong> would


presumably apply to all faces ra<strong>the</strong>r than simply <strong>on</strong>e’s<br />

own, and <strong>the</strong> difference <strong>in</strong> recogniti<strong>on</strong> for self versus <strong>the</strong><br />

relative stranger <strong>in</strong> Study 2 <strong>the</strong>refore seems <strong>in</strong>c<strong>on</strong>sistent<br />

with this alternative. So too are <strong>the</strong> likelihood estimates<br />

reported <strong>in</strong> Figure 2 <strong>in</strong>c<strong>on</strong>sistent with this <strong>in</strong>terpretati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> range of likelihood estimates is directi<strong>on</strong>ally larger<br />

across <strong>the</strong> attractive faces than it is across <strong>the</strong> unattractive<br />

faces, show<strong>in</strong>g a clear ability to differentiate<br />

between <strong>the</strong> images. Never<strong>the</strong>less, <strong>the</strong> new procedure <strong>in</strong><br />

Experiment 3 allows us to test this alternative directly<br />

by measur<strong>in</strong>g, through reacti<strong>on</strong> times, participants’<br />

ability to dist<strong>in</strong>guish am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> morphed images. If <strong>the</strong><br />

range of attractive morphs is small and is <strong>the</strong>refore hard<br />

to dist<strong>in</strong>guish am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m, participants should show a<br />

smaller difference <strong>in</strong> recogniti<strong>on</strong> speed between <strong>the</strong><br />

attractive morph and <strong>the</strong>ir actual face (or perhaps no<br />

difference at all) than between <strong>the</strong>ir unattractive morph<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir actual face.<br />

Method<br />

University of Chicago undergraduates (N = 20, 17<br />

female) participated <strong>in</strong> exchange for $6. As <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> previous<br />

experiments, participants arrived <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> laboratory<br />

for an unrelated experiment and had <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

photograph taken before leav<strong>in</strong>g. Participants’ facial<br />

images were <strong>the</strong>n morphed us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> averag<strong>in</strong>g procedure<br />

from Experiments 1 and 2. After return<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

lab, participants were seated <strong>in</strong> fr<strong>on</strong>t of a blank computer<br />

screen, told that <strong>the</strong>y would be shown an array of<br />

12 photographs (1 of which was <strong>the</strong>ir own), that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were to identify <strong>the</strong>ir own image as quickly as possible,<br />

and that <strong>the</strong>y would see a total of 12 such arrays. Each<br />

array <strong>in</strong>cluded 1 image of <strong>the</strong> actual participant (<strong>in</strong> a<br />

random locati<strong>on</strong>)—ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>ir actual image, <strong>the</strong> 20%<br />

attractive morph, or <strong>the</strong> 20% unattractive morph—and<br />

11 same-gender distracter faces (taken from 33 participants<br />

<strong>in</strong> previous experiments). Each of <strong>the</strong> three target<br />

images (attractive, actual, unattractive) was <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

presented four times <strong>in</strong> a predeterm<strong>in</strong>ed random order.<br />

Participants were told to press <strong>the</strong> space bar as so<strong>on</strong> as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y spotted <strong>the</strong>ir own image, and to <strong>the</strong>n po<strong>in</strong>t to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

image <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> screen that <strong>the</strong>y recognized to be <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own. We used <strong>the</strong> speed with which participants pressed<br />

<strong>the</strong> space bar as an <strong>in</strong>dicati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>ir recogniti<strong>on</strong> speed.<br />

When f<strong>in</strong>ished with all 12 arrays, participants were<br />

thanked, paid, and dismissed.<br />

Results and Discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

Reacti<strong>on</strong> times more than 3 SD from <strong>the</strong> mean of a<br />

particular trial were removed <strong>on</strong> an item-by-item basis<br />

(3.5% of observati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> total). Participants saw each of<br />

<strong>the</strong> target images four times, and we calculated <strong>the</strong> average<br />

speed with which <strong>the</strong>y recognized each of <strong>the</strong> target<br />

images.<br />

A repeated measures ANOVA <strong>on</strong> participants’ average<br />

reacti<strong>on</strong> times to recognize <strong>the</strong> three target faces<br />

revealed a significant effect c<strong>on</strong>sistent with our predicted<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ear trend, F(2, 18) = 4.43, p = .03, η 2 = .33.<br />

Participants recognized <strong>the</strong>ir attractive morph most<br />

quickly (M = 1,892.09 ms, SD = 442.53), <strong>the</strong>ir actual<br />

image more slowly (M = 2,068.44 ms, SD = 559.47),<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir unattractive morph <strong>the</strong> most slowly (M =<br />

2,133.12 ms, SD = 460.11). Follow-up c<strong>on</strong>trasts<br />

revealed that participants were marg<strong>in</strong>ally faster to recognize<br />

<strong>the</strong> attractive morph than <strong>the</strong>ir actual image,<br />

F(1, 19) = 3.35, p = .08, η 2 = .15, and were significantly<br />

faster to recognize <strong>the</strong> attractive morph than <strong>the</strong> unattractive<br />

morph, F(1, 19) = 6.47, p = .02, η 2 = .25. The<br />

difference <strong>in</strong> reacti<strong>on</strong> times for participants to recognize<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir actual image and <strong>the</strong> unattractive morph was n<strong>on</strong>significant,<br />

F < 1. Notice that this result is not <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

<strong>in</strong>c<strong>on</strong>sistent with what an alternative <strong>in</strong>terpretati<strong>on</strong><br />

based <strong>on</strong> range restricti<strong>on</strong>s between participants’ actual<br />

image and <strong>the</strong> morphed targets would predict, it is precisely<br />

<strong>the</strong> opposite of what such an alternative would<br />

predict. People recognize objects more quickly when<br />

those objects match <strong>the</strong>ir mental representati<strong>on</strong>s, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>se results clearly suggest that people’s mental representati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir own facial image are, <strong>on</strong> average,<br />

more desirable than <strong>the</strong>ir image actually appears <strong>in</strong><br />

reality.<br />

GENERAL DISCUSSION<br />

These experiments dem<strong>on</strong>strate that people tend to<br />

show evidence of self-enhancement <strong>in</strong> self-recogniti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

that such self-enhancement extends to close friends but<br />

not relative strangers, and that it is related to automatic<br />

and implicit measures of self-worth ra<strong>the</strong>r than deliberate<br />

and explicit measures. These experiments dem<strong>on</strong>strate<br />

that self-enhancement can emerge dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

relatively automatic and perceptual process of face<br />

recogniti<strong>on</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> pattern of correlati<strong>on</strong>s with<br />

implicit measures of self-worth suggest a versi<strong>on</strong> of selfenhancement<br />

potentially dist<strong>in</strong>ct from exist<strong>in</strong>g dem<strong>on</strong>strati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

of positive illusi<strong>on</strong>s that are c<strong>on</strong>sistently<br />

correlated with explicit measures.<br />

The methodology used to derive <strong>the</strong>se c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s is<br />

novel and immediately seems to raise at least two <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

issues. First, <strong>the</strong> methodology <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se experiments<br />

bears some relati<strong>on</strong> to measures of implicit self-esteem<br />

and raises questi<strong>on</strong>s about whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>se results reflect<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r measure of implicit self-esteem or a c<strong>on</strong>sequence<br />

of implicit self-esteem. We believe it is a c<strong>on</strong>sequence,

ra<strong>the</strong>r than ano<strong>the</strong>r measure, of implicit self-esteem.<br />

Psychological measures of latent c<strong>on</strong>structs are designed<br />

to tap <strong>the</strong> central and def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g features of <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>struct<br />

itself. Implicit self-esteem is <strong>the</strong>oretically def<strong>in</strong>ed as <strong>the</strong><br />

positivity of automatic or <strong>in</strong>tuitive associati<strong>on</strong>s to <strong>the</strong> self<br />

(Koole & DeHart, 2007) and is <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>in</strong>dexed by<br />

measures of lik<strong>in</strong>g for th<strong>in</strong>gs associated with <strong>the</strong> self<br />

(such as lik<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itials of <strong>on</strong>e’s name; Dijksterhuis,<br />

2004; Koole et al., 2001) or by <strong>the</strong> valence of associati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

automatically activated when primed with <strong>the</strong> self-c<strong>on</strong>cept<br />

(e.g., Hetts et al., 1999; Spald<strong>in</strong>g & Hard<strong>in</strong>, 1999).<br />

Because lik<strong>in</strong>g is used as a cue for recogniti<strong>on</strong> (M<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>,<br />

2003), we believe that enhancement bias <strong>in</strong> self-recogniti<strong>on</strong><br />

is <strong>on</strong>e causal step removed from <strong>the</strong> more basic underly<strong>in</strong>g<br />

measure of implicit self-regard and <strong>the</strong>refore is better<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ceptualized as a psychological phenomen<strong>on</strong> ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

than as a psychological measure.<br />

Sec<strong>on</strong>d, novel methodologies such as <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e used<br />

here raise c<strong>on</strong>cerns about procedural artifacts that may<br />

provide alternative <strong>in</strong>terpretati<strong>on</strong>s of an experiment’s<br />

results. Although we took great care to avoid obvious<br />

c<strong>on</strong>founds, readers may be c<strong>on</strong>cerned that <strong>the</strong> images<br />

may have somehow differed <strong>in</strong> lum<strong>in</strong>ance, blurr<strong>in</strong>ess, or<br />

some o<strong>the</strong>r aspect systematically across <strong>the</strong> experiments.<br />

We have no evidence to suggest such procedural<br />

artifacts but notice that any such procedural c<strong>on</strong>cerns<br />

would need to account for <strong>the</strong> breadth of f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

across <strong>the</strong> entire set of experiments—not simply <strong>the</strong><br />

mean-level bias <strong>in</strong> recogniti<strong>on</strong>s observed for self and<br />

friends (Experiments 1 and 2), for <strong>on</strong>e’s actual image<br />

and <strong>on</strong>e’s mirror image (follow-up to Experiment 1), or<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> speed of recogniti<strong>on</strong> (Experiment 3), but also for<br />

<strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sistent pattern of correlati<strong>on</strong>s with implicit versus<br />

explicit measures of self-worth (and <strong>the</strong> symmetry<br />

procedure menti<strong>on</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Note 1).<br />

One alternative <strong>in</strong>terpretati<strong>on</strong> that might systematically<br />

be able to expla<strong>in</strong> this entire pattern, and <strong>on</strong>e we<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore believed required additi<strong>on</strong>al empirical <strong>in</strong>vestigati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

<strong>in</strong>volves people’s actual attractiveness. People who<br />

are actually more attractive may have more difficulty dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

between images morphed with <strong>the</strong> attractive<br />

target simply because <strong>the</strong> objective difference between an<br />

attractive pers<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> attractive target used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

experiments would be smaller. Attractive participants<br />

might <strong>the</strong>refore false alarm to <strong>the</strong> attractively enhanced<br />

images more often. If attractive people also have higher<br />

implicit self-worth, such an alternative could account for<br />

<strong>the</strong> pattern we obta<strong>in</strong>ed. Although we menti<strong>on</strong>ed that a<br />

similar alternative <strong>in</strong>terpretati<strong>on</strong> does not seem to account<br />

for <strong>the</strong> pattern of results observed <strong>in</strong> Experiment 3 across<br />

all participants, our c<strong>on</strong>cern here has more to do with <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual-level correlati<strong>on</strong>s between participants.<br />

We exam<strong>in</strong>ed this alternative by hav<strong>in</strong>g separate<br />

groups of participants (between 20 and 24 for each<br />

experiment) rate <strong>the</strong> actual attractiveness of each orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

image used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> experiments. Raters evaluated <strong>the</strong><br />

participants from <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> experiments <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

<strong>in</strong> this article, with images of <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al participants<br />

appear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a random order. No c<strong>on</strong>sistent relati<strong>on</strong>ship<br />

emerged between average rat<strong>in</strong>gs of actual attractiveness<br />

and <strong>the</strong> photo participants orig<strong>in</strong>ally selected as<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own (rs = –.37, –.15, and .29, for Experiment 1,<br />

Experiment 1 follow-up, and Experiment 2, respectively,<br />

all ps > .05) or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> speed with which <strong>the</strong>y identified<br />

any of <strong>the</strong> images <strong>in</strong> Experiment 3 (ps > .3).<br />

Average rat<strong>in</strong>gs of attractiveness were also not c<strong>on</strong>sistently<br />

related to <strong>the</strong> composite measure of implicit selfesteem<br />

across <strong>the</strong> three experiments (ps > .2). Differences<br />

<strong>in</strong> actual attractiveness do not seem to account for <strong>the</strong><br />

results we observed.<br />

Although <strong>the</strong>se results are generally c<strong>on</strong>sistent with<br />

<strong>the</strong> general picture of self-enhancement that emerges<br />

from <strong>the</strong> social psychological literature, <strong>the</strong>y appear at<br />

odds with empirical results regard<strong>in</strong>g body satisfacti<strong>on</strong><br />

more generally. In particular, both men and women tend<br />

to show c<strong>on</strong>sistent dissatisfacti<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong>ir body image<br />

(Powell, Matac<strong>in</strong>, & Stuart, 2001) and may even hold<br />

negatively distorted percepti<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong>ir own bodies.<br />

Women (especially those with eat<strong>in</strong>g disorders) asked to<br />

represent <strong>the</strong>ir waist circumference with a rope, for<br />

<strong>in</strong>stance, tend to create a circle that may be as little as<br />

half <strong>the</strong> size of <strong>the</strong>ir actual waist (for a review, see Cash<br />

& Deagle, 1997). The resoluti<strong>on</strong>, we suspect, may come<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> automatic and implicit versus relatively c<strong>on</strong>trolled<br />

and deliberate nature of <strong>the</strong> measures used <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se differ<strong>in</strong>g experiments. The self-enhanc<strong>in</strong>g results we<br />

report here emerge <strong>on</strong> recogniti<strong>on</strong> measures that are prototypic<br />

examples of automatic psychological processes,<br />

whereas body dissatisfacti<strong>on</strong> results emerge <strong>in</strong> more<br />

deliberate and explicit measures. Similar dissociati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

between implicit and explicit self-views have emerged <strong>in</strong><br />

cross-cultural studies of self-enhancement between<br />

Asian and Western Europeans. Although explicit measures<br />

show c<strong>on</strong>sistent evidence of self-criticism and deprecati<strong>on</strong><br />

am<strong>on</strong>g East Asians compared to Western<br />

Europeans (He<strong>in</strong>e et al., 1999), <strong>the</strong>ir implicit self-assessments<br />

are predictably favorable (Hetts et al., 1999;<br />

Kitayama & Karasawa, 1997; Yamaguchi et al., 2007).<br />

Whe<strong>the</strong>r a similar dissociati<strong>on</strong> would emerge <strong>in</strong> percepti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

of body image more generally is an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

avenue for fur<strong>the</strong>r research.<br />

More generally, <strong>the</strong> relati<strong>on</strong> between self-enhancement<br />

and implicit self-worth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se experiments suggests<br />

a potentially dist<strong>in</strong>ct versi<strong>on</strong> of self-enhancement<br />

from exist<strong>in</strong>g dem<strong>on</strong>strati<strong>on</strong>s of positive illusi<strong>on</strong>s that<br />

are c<strong>on</strong>sistently correlated with explicit measures.<br />

Implicit attitude measures tend to reflect c<strong>on</strong>sistent and<br />

repeated associati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>ment, produc<strong>in</strong>g


automatic associati<strong>on</strong>s through classical c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

that can <strong>the</strong>n extend to related but unc<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>ed stimuli.<br />

People structure <strong>the</strong>ir lives <strong>in</strong> ways that tend to<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> likelihood of positive associati<strong>on</strong>s to <strong>the</strong><br />

self (or close friends and loved <strong>on</strong>es), and stimuli associated<br />

with <strong>the</strong> self are <strong>the</strong>refore automatically evaluated<br />

positively (Beggan, 1992; Pelham, Carvallo, &<br />

J<strong>on</strong>es, 2005). The experiments here suggest that such<br />

associati<strong>on</strong>s can create positive distorti<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> self as<br />

well, a top-down <strong>in</strong>fluence that not <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>in</strong>fluences how<br />

people th<strong>in</strong>k about <strong>the</strong>mselves but also what people see<br />

when <strong>the</strong>y look directly at <strong>the</strong>mselves. It is perhaps of<br />

little w<strong>on</strong>der, <strong>the</strong>n, that people so rarely seem to like <strong>the</strong><br />

photographs taken of <strong>the</strong>mselves. The image captured<br />

by <strong>the</strong> camera lens just does not match up to <strong>the</strong> image<br />

captured <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d’s eye.<br />

morphed images <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> symmetry. Exist<strong>in</strong>g research dem<strong>on</strong>strates<br />

that people tend to like symmetrical images of <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

(Little & J<strong>on</strong>es, 2003), and symmetry is generally perceived as be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

attractive (Rhodes, 2006). In this symmetry procedure, participants’<br />

facial images were split <strong>in</strong> half vertically, <strong>the</strong> right side flipped to create<br />

a perfectly symmetrical face, and participants’ actual image was<br />

morphed with this symmetrical image <strong>in</strong> 10% <strong>in</strong>crements up to 90%,<br />

result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 11 total images. Because this procedure <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>in</strong>creases<br />

symmetry ra<strong>the</strong>r than decreases it, mean biases <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> recognized<br />

image cannot be taken as clear evidence of self-enhancement, as any<br />

random error <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> selecti<strong>on</strong> of faces can <strong>on</strong>ly lead to a selecti<strong>on</strong> of<br />

an enhanced face. We <strong>in</strong>cluded this procedure <strong>on</strong>ly to serve as a possible<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ceptual replicati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> relati<strong>on</strong> between recogniti<strong>on</strong> and<br />

implicit versus explicit self-esteem.<br />

Recent evidence, however, suggests that this chimeric procedure<br />

can slightly decrease <strong>the</strong> apparent attractiveness of <strong>the</strong> face due to<br />

anomalies <strong>in</strong>troduced by asymmetrical facial features (for a review,<br />

see Rhodes, 2006). We tried to elim<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong>se c<strong>on</strong>cerns by remov<strong>in</strong>g<br />

three people who had obvious facial marks that would appear<br />

bizarre with this procedure, but we cannot rule out artifacts altoge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

This procedure, unbeknown to us at <strong>the</strong> time, <strong>the</strong>refore c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

some ambiguities that may make it less than ideal for our<br />

purposes.<br />

That said, results from this symmetry procedure were at least c<strong>on</strong>sistent<br />

with our predicti<strong>on</strong>s. As with <strong>the</strong> averag<strong>in</strong>g procedure, participants’<br />

tendency to select <strong>the</strong> more symmetrical self-images was<br />

significantly correlated with <strong>the</strong> composite measure of implicit selfesteem,<br />

r(22) = .40, p = .05, but not with explicit self-esteem, r = .18,<br />

p = .40. Participants tended to select a face that was significantly more<br />

enhanced than <strong>the</strong>ir own (M = 26.25% morph with perfectly symmetrical<br />

image), t(23) = 4.68, p < .001, d = 1.95.<br />
