level so this team is ready for this stage. The team, like most in this 

year’s NFR, have won on many different size patterns, so if they get 

on a roll look for them to have a great week and don’t be surprised 

if this team moves up the average as the ten rounds play out. 

#7 Kaley Bass, only 19 years old, and her mount Wonders 

Cowboy Dan (Cowboy) have been on a roll since the middle of the 

summer and haven’t cooled off. Last year the team ended the year 

#22 with $51,267 and were runner up in the WPRA Barrel Racing 

Rookie of the Year to Lee Ann Rust. Cowboy is a calm horse 

that should thrive in the WNFR environment. Also, nothing seems 

to shake Bass, so look for them to be a team to make get in there 

for some good checks and they should continue to improve as the 

WNFR goes on. 

#8 Brenda Mays and her great black gelding, Judge Buy Cash 

(Jethro) have been to the Finals six years in a row. They have won 

consistently at every rodeo in the country throughout the years and 

at the past NFRs. With all that experience the team brings into the 

Finals, this could be the year this team breaks out becomes the team 

to beat. 

#9 Lisa Lockhart and her buckskin rocket, An Oakie With Cash 

(Louie), are another team who thrive at the Finals. Over the last two 

years, this team has won $186,463, also for the second year in a row, 

the team comes off winning the average title at the at the Canadian 

Finals Rodeo (CFR) just a couple weeks ago. All told, the team has 

won over $100k at the CFR over the last two years. So Lockhart and 

Louie, like Cervi and Stingray, may be a little far out of the top spot 

to contend for a world title but will be a great bet to get their name 

on a bunch of checks through the week. 

#10 Benette Barrington-Little is probably one of the first contestants 

to ever bring two studs as her team to the WNFR, but what 

a team of studs they are. Her main mount, Jl Dash Ta Heaven is 

another barrel racing blue blood, by Dash Ta Fame and out of Dynas 

Plain Special, who carried Janae (Ward) Massey to the world title 

in 2003. Jl Dash Ta Heaven not only was born to be at the WNFR, 

he has won rodeos throughout the country and set arena records at 

some of the biggest barrel races. He is probably the flat out fastest 

horse you will see at the Finals and if he takes to the pen there, the 

arena record might be in trouble. Chicados Cash will serve as her 

backup but he is coming on at the right time and comes off a big 

win at the Quarter Horse Congress 

#11 Kelli Tolbert and her gritty little mare Rf Firefly (Cleo) come 

into their second WNFR experienced and ready. In 2010, they were 

the 4th high money winners in the barrel racing at the Finals with 

earnings of almost $60k and were a couple of tipped barrels away 

from winning a whole lot more. This team could be the darkhorses 

of the Finals. Cleo loves the pen and is as gritty as they come, so 

look for them to pick up some round buckles. 

#12 Lee Ann Rust and her homebred mount SS Streakers R Us 

(Harley) were the 2011 WPRA Barrel Racing Rookie of the Year 

and come into their first NFR off a great season and a good showing 

at the Canadian Finals Rodeo. This team show great consistency 

and that should continue through the WNFR. By the end of the 

Finals they should be moving up the average standings. 

#13 Christina Richman and her great little sorrel mare Xtrared 

(Stitch) have qualified for their third straight WNFR. Unfortunately, 

Stitch had surgery and is out for the Finals. For the Finals, she will 

start out riding Perfectos Dually and bring Juliejuliejulie as a backup. 

Both horses are proven jackpot and rodeo money earners in tough 

competition. Richman has been getting used to the two of them 

for a couple weeks and with her previous WNFR experience, she 

should be ready to roll when they break out of the alley on Thursday. 

#14 Trula Churchill also abaord a homebred gelding A Streak 

Of Rita (Worm) are a great team that have won at futurities, derbies 

and now rodeo. Although she hasn’t been to the WNFR before, the 

last two years at the Canadian Finals Rodeo under similar conditions 

Churchill and Worm have thrived. During those two trips to they 

CFR they have earned close to $95,000. Worm is tough and runs 

great under conditions similar to the WNFR so they should have a 

bankable week in Vegas. 

#15 Christy Loflin and her great little mare Sheza Blazin Move

(Movin) had an amazing run late in the summer to grab the 15th 

spot in the Finals. Unfortunately, Movin is also recovering from 

surgery. So, Loflin found two horses to carry her at the Finals. She 

will start out on Hpq Smokin Rascal and bring Miss Judge N Me as 

a backup. Hpq Smokin Rascal has won at futurities, derbies, and rodeos 

and is a proven competitor. Miss Judge N Me is also a proven 

competitor in the jackpots and rodeos in Colorado. Both horses 

have been seasoned and are ready for this stage. Loflin enters the 

WNFR on a great team of horses and if one of them takes to the 

arena in Vegas she should have a great week. 

This year’s WNFR Barrel Racing will highlight some of the 

fastest barrel horses we have ever seen. It would not be surprising 

to see some records fall as the Finals progress. It will be an amazing 

fight for a world title with $18,257 for winning a round and a 

$46,820 check for winning the average title. The big payout at the 

WNFR puts almost everyone in the game. It is going to be interesting 

to see how the newcoming teams take to the arena and which of 

the veterans gets hot first. 

Now the only question left is, are you ready? The Thomas & 

Mack will be the only place to be from Dec 6-15 and you can watch 

it all on Great American Country (GAC). Make sure you have it 

added GAC to your cable or satellite programming (Channel 165 on 

Dish Network or Channel 326 on DirecTV) and on Thursday night 

at 10pm Eastern Time the action begins for 10 straight days. The 

action will also be carried live on the internet at www.prorodeolive. 

com and they even have a great app you can download to listen to 

it on your phone if you are on the go. Just go on there tomorrow 

and download the app and you will be ready Then just sit back and 

enjoy the greatest time of year for barrel racing!

brr: History of your horse(s). 

Sears: I bought Martha in January of 2006, she was just turning 6 

and was very green, she had only been to probably a 10 events or 

so. At that point she hadn’t won much and went to the right. In the 

fall of 2006 through the winter of 2007 I retrained her to go the 

left. I did however manage to make it to the 2006 NFR on her from 

just her winnings over that summer at all the big outdoor rodeos.

The spring of 2007 I started competing on her going to the left 

and since I trained her to the left I made her into my style a little 

more and we really kind of gelled together and she developed into a 

great one. From then on we have been winning. 

She carried me to a World Championship in 2008, Reserve in 

2007 and 2009 and third place in 2010. In 2011, Martha won the 

NFR average and that win carried us to another world title. She has 

about $1.75 million in career earnings. Interestingly, in her career, 35 

rodeos in a year is the most rodeos she has been to. 

I bought Mo when he was a 6 year old and I have been seasoning 

him since then. I won Jackson, MS and won several other smaller 

rodeos and have won rounds on him at Red Bluff, Houston and 

Calgary, Pendleton. I won about $80k in 2011 on him while Martha 

was coming back from injury. In 2012, I have probably won around 

$50k at approved rodeos along with recently winning over $40k 

at the Canadian Finals Rodeo. In his lifetime he is closing in on 

$250,000 in earnings.

Sears: I have a long list of things to do to the horses before each 

night. I’m a firm believer in having them feeling as good as possible 

and that requires a huge team of people working on them. My vet- 

erinarian & chiropractor go through the horses daily and my helpers 

do the rest.

Here is an excerpt from our Report after Walker and Latte 

won Nampa, ID earlier in the year that tells the inspirational 

story of mary Walker and Latte: 

Walker: Cheri Cogburn had asked me to ride Latte (Perculatin) in 

August or September of 2010. She wanted me to get him rodeo 

ready for her. I had always liked him and had even tried to buy him 

a couple times. I took him home and started teaching him how to 

run and we did pretty good. We started at jackpots and went to 

rodeos and he did well. Then in April 2011, my son, Reagon, died 

(in an auto accident). After that Byron actually bought Latte for me 

as a surprise on May 17, 2011. He and Cheri got together and he 

bought him for me as a surprise. In June Latte fell with me at the 

3rd barrel at Crosby, TX. The fall shattered my pelvis, broke two 

toes, and fractured 2 vertebraes in my back. So Latte got six months 

off while I recovered. Byron rode him a couple times for me while I 

was recovering. He said he is the slowest horse he has ever been on. 

He is so lazy in the pasture, we always joke that flying turtles could 

pass him! 




After a while, my therapist told me to get back on a horse. I had 

gone from a wheelchair to a walker, but I couldn’t even walk yet. I 

started back on a black and white paint we have that is a grand entry 

horse for Ft Worth every year and has been to the NFR as a grand 

entry horse. Byron had to put me on and I rode the first time for 15 

minutes. I rode Paint 4-5 times per week just walking, trying to get

2011, I started riding Latte again. I just worked on getting back to 

trusting myself. My first rodeo back was Odessa (January 2012) and 

I placed in the second round and then started heading to rodeos. I 

was still weak and only 95 pounds but I had to get my strength and 

courage back and we were back on the road. 

If it wasn’t for Latte, I don’t know if I would have been able to 

come back.

cervi: Mp Meter My Hay- We raised her, she is out a 3/4 sister to 

Hawk. Colter Todd broke her to ride, then Mom (Wendy Potter) 

rode her for a little bit. Then when she was 4 she went to Ryan 

(Lovendahl), he rode her for about 5 months, then I rode her for a 

couple months, then sent her back to Ryan for her 5 year old year. 

I used her is 2008 as a backup horse to TinMan and didn’t make 

the finals that year. I really started using her quite a bit in 2009. I 




ended up 3rd in the World that year and won the most money of 

any of the events at the 2009 WNFR. I also won the average that 

year (won $146k that year at the NFR). In 2010, we were the WPRA 

Barrel Racing World Champions. In 2011, we earned over $93k at 

the NFR and ended up 3rd in the World. She has a little over $900k 

in lifetime earnings so far. 

Mp A Man With Roses- We raised him as well out of 7/8 sister 

to Troubles (Sir Double Delight). He pretty much went through the 

same program as Stingray. I got him back in the fall from Ryan and 

won the Greg Olson on him as a 5 year old. I hauled him around 

the rest of the year and took him to jackpots. I took him to a few 

rodeos at 6. This last year he ran a 16.6 (16.646, on of the fastest 

times ever on a standard pattern) on a standard pattern at the Pac 

West Barrel Race. He is getting close to $105k in lifetime earnings.

brr: What cartoon character has a similar personality as your horse? 

cervi: I think Nala from the Lion King because Stingray is really 

independent and does her own thing but has princess tendencies 

and likes to be treated like a princess. 




cervi: It is definitely important to have a physically fit horse going 

into the finals. Throughout the year, you make 10 runs in a row, 

but it is especially important under those conditions to have them 

physically fit. Yourself, you have to be mentally ready to compete 10 

rounds in a row. Going into the Finals I make sure I do everything 

I can do to be prepared. In that way I have no doubt I am physi-

other 14 girls are coming to do their best. It is important to be as 

physically and mentally ready as you can be, as a team, and then go 

run barrels! 

I have a routine as I warm up, it is usually cool in Vegas so I make 

sure she is limber so I walk her quite a while and then trot her and 

lope her and make sure she is listening to me. She hates the wagon 

(stagecoach) in the warmup pen so we try to stay away from that. 

Maybe this year she will finally be used to it! Right before we get 

ready to go down into the tunnel, I put her boots on and put her 

competition bit on. Then I am ready to run.
