DISSERTATION. Ixv<br />

case, which is formed, as in <strong>the</strong> Javanese, by <strong>the</strong> affix ne. Any<br />

radical is determined to a verbal sense by <strong>the</strong> prefix a, or by <strong>the</strong><br />

nasals ng or n, as in Javanese, <strong>and</strong> a transitive verb is formed,<br />

as in <strong>Malay</strong>, by <strong>the</strong> affix kan. Abstract nouns are formed ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

by <strong>the</strong> prefixes in p, or tlie affix an, or by both conjointly.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> large proportion <strong>of</strong> native Vords in <strong>the</strong> Lumpung,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se words, I am disposed to come to <strong>the</strong><br />

conclusion that it is an original <strong>and</strong> distinct <strong>language</strong>. With<br />

a single exception all <strong>the</strong> prepositions are peculiar. This is<br />

di, " at, to, <strong>of</strong>,^^ which, as it is solitary, is probably only an<br />

accidental coincidence. It seems, indeed, to be only an abbre-<br />

viation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same preposition written at length, disapa. That<br />

<strong>the</strong> prepositions are peculiar will be seen by comparing <strong>the</strong>m<br />

<strong>with</strong> those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>, <strong>the</strong> <strong>language</strong> which is most mixed up<br />

<strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lampung.<br />

LAMPUNG.
