Downer rail has delivered more than 1,100 passenger
cars to australian operators, including all the latest
electric passenger rolling stock for brisbane and perth,
the supply of the millennium to railcorp in nsw and
now currently delivering the largest single rolling stock
project ever undertaken in australia, the 626 waratah
passenger cars for sydney.
We partner with leading international
suppliers to deliver and support stateof-the-art
vehicles providing passengers
with safe, comfortable and reliable
journeys. Our partners include:
• Hitachi for EMUs and electric and
diesel tilt trains
• Bombardier Transportation for
electric multiple units
• Changchun Railway Vehicles
Co. Limited for manufacture of
passenger trains.
In recent times we have made a
significant investment in upgrading
our Maryborough and Cardiff
manufacturing facilities to continue
our commitment to maintaining
our state-of-the-art manufacturing
capability whilst simultaneously
increasing output capacity and
ensuring the highest quality and
certainty of delivery for our customers.
We have introduced world’s best
practice methodologies to eliminate
waste and optimise manufacturing
efficiency and quality.
Our passenger rail customers include:
• Public Transport Authority (PTA)
(Western Australia)
• Queensland Rail (Queensland)
• MTM (Victoria)
• VLine (Victoria)
• RailCorp (New South Wales).
We also operate passenger transport
services with our international partner
Keolis, one of the world’s leading
transport groups under our KDR joint

• Yarra Trams in Melbourne
(the world’s largest tram network)

• Gold Coast Light Rail, which is
currently in construction phase and

Downer rail supply chain provides a complete range of procurement, purchasing,
multi-mode logistics, and warehousing services with integrated planning from
its head office premises in rhodes new south wales, regional operations in
cardiff new south wales, newport victoria, canning vale wa and maryborough
Queensland, our aftermarket parts (amp) Distribution centre in wetherill park,
new south wales, and 21 regional subsidiary offices and stores to support our
national network.
The AMP division offers an extensive
range of spare parts and material
supply solutions to support passenger,
locomotive and wagon fleets, and is
an authorised distributor of EMD, unit
exchange components (UTEX) and
locomotive spares.
Downer Rail is actively building
new product lines through its AMP
division to service freight wagons and
passenger applications.

Downer rail has supplied over 60 per cent of the dieselelectric
locomotives operating in australia. with our key
technology partner emD, we continue to supply the local
market with new locomotives and support the existing fleets.
Our product suite covers standard
and narrow gauge locomotives, both
with modern AC traction models. Our
products have been extended by our
relationship with Progress Rail, who
offer lower horse power, DC traction
and light axle load options, as a result
of its acquisition of EMD. Downer
Rail and EMD have a clearly defined
product development path to ensure
we satisfy our customers’ business
needs by introducing value-add
products and features.
The future supply of competitive
current and next generation
locomotives into the Australian
market has been guaranteed by
an agreement with EMD for the
manufacture of these locomotives
at state-of-the-art manufacturing
facilities in India and North America.
Downer Rail will maintain the client
relationship for all EMD locomotive sales
and support in Australia.

Ongoing demand for resources,

Key freight rail customers include
Pacific National, QR National, BHP
Billiton, FMG, Rio Tinto, Genesee &
Wyoming, SCT Logistics and CFCLA.
Downer Rail and EMD are the only
proven successful supplier of Pilbaraspec
AC traction locomotives specifically
designed to service the harsh Iron Ore
mining operations in Western Australia’s
north west region. The SD70ACe/LCi
design has features such as dual air
conditioning as well as a 1,000,000
pounds buff-load underframe when
compared with a standard SD70ACe
locomotive – these features, among a
number of others, result in the locomotive
delivering exemplary performance for
our customers in the Pilbara.
Our customers have access to a
comprehensive offering of rolling stock
spares with more than 8,000 line items
held in stock.
For customers who are looking to free
up valuable maintenance resources
from the task of managing inventory
and the supply chain, Downer Rail
offers a range of services to improve
rolling stock availability, including:
• Service and overhaul kits
• Rotable pools
• Material management solutions
