MEYER WERFT
was founded in 1795
After the years of wooden shipbuilding, the company demonstrated pioneering
spirit which formed the basis for the continual development of the shipyard. The
company began to build iron ships with steam engines in 1872.
Papenburg had around 20 shipyards in 1860 – only MEYER WERFT survived into
the 21st century. Up to 400 seaworthy ships were
registered in Papenburg in the 19th century.
In between the two World Wars, the shipyard mainly built trawlers, pilot vessels
and lightships as well as passenger ships for coastal travel. In 1960, the company
began gas tanker construction and in 1964 Papenburg's first Ro-Ro ferry, the
MALMÖ, was delivered.
Over the past decades, MEYER WERFT has acquired an excellent international
reputation through the construction of car and passenger ferries, Ro-Ro and
passenger ships, gas tankers and luxurious cruise ships in particular.
