The gardens cared for, studied and presented by the <strong>Prussian</strong> Palaces<br />

and <strong><strong>Garden</strong>s</strong> Foundation Berl<strong>in</strong>-Brandenburg (SPSG) comprise some<br />

750 hectares <strong>of</strong> historic sites at the centre<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Europe</strong>. Over the centuries they have both received and exerted<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluences, exchang<strong>in</strong>g and adapt<strong>in</strong>g ideas <strong>in</strong> garden design and technologies<br />

through an <strong>in</strong>ternational web <strong>of</strong> relationships.<br />

Knowledge <strong>of</strong> more recent gardens and developments<br />

was transported through family and social connections, educational<br />

travel and writ<strong>in</strong>gs on the <strong>Prussian</strong> gardens.<br />

In the 19th century the garden landscapes <strong>of</strong> Potsdam and Berl<strong>in</strong> created<br />

by Peter Joseph Lenné and the <strong>Prussian</strong> School for <strong>Garden</strong>ers exerted a strong <strong>in</strong>fluence on other<br />

countries.<br />

This unique landscape has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List s<strong>in</strong>ce 1990.<br />

The conference br<strong>in</strong>gs together 75 experts from Germany<br />

and 18 other <strong>Europe</strong>an countries to exam<strong>in</strong>e, for the first time, the position <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Prussian</strong> gardens <strong>in</strong><br />

the history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Europe</strong>an garden arts. The conference is also the occasion for publication by the SPSG<br />

and Edition Leipzig <strong>of</strong> the book, ‘<strong>Prussian</strong> <strong><strong>Garden</strong>s</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Europe</strong> – <strong>300</strong> <strong>Years</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Garden</strong> <strong>History</strong>’.<br />
