SPLASH Dec/Jan 2013

A fter about two and a half long years in

the development doldrums, we are fi nally

able to sit back and enjoy our Christmas

and New Year celebration without dust,

drilling and other construction work clutter.

The major works have been completed,

only some non-compliance rectifi cation

works have yet to be completed. We

have successfully obtained the Temporary

Occupation Permit (TOP) for Palms Café

and the Cabanas. In fact, even as I pen

this note the F&B Department is planning

the Re-opening celebration for Palms on

1 December. Come and enjoy the new ambience and savour the new

menu they have prepared for you. After the inconvenience you have been

subject to, you deserve it! I hear the beef teppanyaki is good. I have

already got that down on my “must try” list!

We have submitted the Temporary Fire Permit for the Admin Block

and expect to receive it any time now. Once we have secured it, we

will apply for TOP for the Admin Block which includes the Jackpot

Room. Once our Admin Block extension

gets underway, we will be able to open

We have not yet gotten clearance for

the kiosks at the Cabanas and for the push

carts. We are pushing relentlessly for it.

Lose ends notwithstanding, we are

determined to live it up to the hilt as we

partake in our year-end festivities – just like

the good old yesteryears!

As Christmas spirit shines brightly, many club members will take

a much-earned breather and enjoy the festive season with family and

friends.

I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Sporting year ahead!

SPLASH Dec/Jan 2013

On behalf of all the Club staff, I would

like to take this opportunity to wish our

members and friends a very Happy

Christmas and a peaceful new year.

2012 has been a year of progress for

the Club, particularly in view of the fact

that the major redevelopment works are

coming to an end.

We have rolled out a number of

new initiatives and activities through

the Social & Fellowship and Lifestyle &

Wellness Sub-Committees over the last

few months, which were appreciated by

members. We received good feedback for them. I would like to thank all

members who participated in these events for their enthusiasm and support.

As is tradition, the Club will be offering the usual sumptuous fare on Christmas

Eve and Christmas Day for you to celebrate and enjoy with family and friends.

The F&B Department have prepared a host of traditional goodies to satisfy

your taste buds during the festive

season. Do place your orders early to

avoid the last minute jam.

The New Year’s Eve party is the crown

jewel in the Club’s social calendar. We

hope you’ll come in droves to have a

rollin’ good time and help us usher in the

New Year. There will be plenty of good

food, wine and top-rate entertainment, and I recommend that you book your

place soonest.

As this is my last message for 2012, I would like to thank all members

for your support, patronage and feedback to the Club throughout the year.

Once again I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Mid-Autumn Festival: 29 September

Sheer magic!

by NIRMAL CHAHAL

We all look forward to the mid-autumn festival – but for

different reasons. For the adults, it is the time of the year for

mooncakes and endless teas. The children enjoy more the

carnival and playing with colourful lanterns. This year was

no different.

The celebrations began at 7pm with the fi rst stage

game, a mooncake-making contest. The kids were given

Here’s my mooncake - freshed moulded

Kids jazzing up their keyrings

Chang-er leading the children in procession

plasticine and told to create a mooncake. That proved quite

a challenge to their creativity!

Then came the hula-hoop contest where 20 kids tried

to keep the hoop off the ground for as long as they could.

There was also a magic show. But the highlight of the

evening must be the face changing performance! It was

amazing how the performer changed his masks at lightning

speed.

Then as darkness descended, it was time for the kids to

parade round the premises with their lanterns led by Chang

Er. The sight of the children carrying their lighted lanterns

by the poolside was simply magical!

Hair Care Workshop: 13 October

Care for your crowning glory

by ALEX SEO

Most of us have issues with our hair. If it’s not dandruff, it’s

itchy scalp or perhaps something worse – like falling hair!

So it was with eager anticipation that our members came

for the hair-care workshop conducted by Beijing 101. The

consultant spoke of the various hair problems and their

causes. Most could be traced to our lifestyle choices and

improper hair-care routines.

The consultant gave a demonstration on daily hair care

techniques and a scalp massage which can be done at

home.

A lively discussion followed where members got the

chance to ask the hot-button questions they’ve been

carrying for a long time. Most of them went away satisfi ed.

One delighted member won the lucky draw and walked

away with a hamper of hair-care products. With the new

confi dence gained from the talk, members couldn’t wait for

the weekend – to let their hair down!

Will & Estate Planning: 13 October

Security for your

loved ones

by JULIET SEAH

Writing wills is not something we like to bring up in social

conversation. It is a subject that can be sensitive and

unpleasant. On the other hand, it is also something that is

vital in ensuring that our loved ones are cared for in the event

of our untimely death.

The speaker Mr Kenneth Yap spoke of the benefi ts of

writing a will and how the law will distribute assets in the

absence of a will. Mr Yap shared a few scenarios to allow

the participants to come to a better understanding of how

they can ensure that their loved ones do not lose out in the

distribution of their assets.

Participants found out that there are various ways to

distribute their assets. Some of the ways include by percentage,

by a fi xed amount of cash and by transferring their

personal accounts. At the end of the talk, the participants

had the chance to ask questions and have them answered by

a professional. If nothing else, they left with a more positive

attitude towards planning their will and estate.

24th Annual Bi-Lateral Games: 10, 13 & 14 October

We came so close!

by ARUN RAJAN

Eight games were contested in these annual games

between our Club and SIA Group Sports Club. The games

were Badminton, Billiards, Bowling, Golf, Squash, Soccer,

Tennis and Table Tennis. SSC had a good start by taking the

golf game by a solitary point. Then our socceroos came on

and had the chance to open up our advantage when they

led 3-1 in the soccer game. But they blew their chances

and eventually lost the game 4-3.

We managed to recapture the lead by taking the

Badminton and Table Tennis games. But SIA responded by

taking the Squash, Bowling, Billiards and Tennis games to

win the annual event with an overall score of 5-3.

The dinner cum trophy presentation was held at the

SSC Grand Ballroom. Sports Chairman Krishan Kashyap

addressed the participants. In a gesture of friendship

Krishan gave away the prizes for the SIA wins while SIA’s

Captain Mathew Mathew, the chairman of the organizing

committee, gave away the prizes for the SSC wins.

3rd Inter-Social Club Golf Tournament (Fourth Leg) – 19 October

All smiles as SSC take second spot

by PHILIP TAN

The cool and breezy day saw 16 of

our golfers compete the third leg of

at Orchid Country Club. In all, seven

clubs participated. The total Stableford

points based on 80% handicap of each

team was collated to determine the

winners for this leg,

A delicious eight-course dinner was

served in Pin Si Restaurant at SAFRA

Yishun. The golfers sat on the edge

of their seats as they waited for the

results. But it ended happily for our

players who fi nished in second spot in

this leg of the tournament, and overall

second across the four legs played this

year. Francis Chia and Steven Eng

were the toast of the day.

SSC 10th Golf Competition 2012 – 7 November

Rain didn’t stop the game

by PHILIP TAN

Forty-four of our golfers participated in the competition played at National Service

Resort & Country Club (Kranji). The format of play for the day was System 36

Stableford. Rain halted play twice, but our golfers managed to complete their

game eventually.

After the game, the golfers had a nice buffet dinner and prize presentation at

Kick & Swim: 22 September

Juniors get their first

taste of competition

by CONDREY LIU

The Kick & Swim series was designed to move our Learnto-Swim

children away from theory and give them at least a

foretaste of competition.

The event also gave the children an opportunity for

interaction and bonding. Furthermore it forced them to

exercise teamwork, time management and personal

discipline.

All participants were presented with a certifi cate and a

souvenir collar pin, which they wore with pride.

Grand Prix #4: 28 September

Only a Club event but the

competition was razor keen

by CONDREY LIU

The last Grand Prix of the year did not get off to the best of

starts. To begin with, the starter’s siren malfunctioned after

the fi rst event, leaving us to fi gure out another way to start

off the swimmers.

But once the meet got underway, it was the swimmers

that took centrestage, as should be the case. The 9-year

old boys showed us why they are considered the most

competitive age group.

The 50m freestyle was won by Matthew Lim, with Nicholas

Cheong just two hundredths of a second behind. Then

Bertrand Cher outswim Matthew in the 100m backstroke

and 200m freestyle, with less than two tenths of a second

separating them in the later event.

The girls advanced group saw Ashley Khoo, Coline Staes-

Polet and Esther Chan sharing the honours. Ashley won the

fi rst 50m freestyle ahead of Coline and Esther.

In the 200m freestyle, Coline edged out Ashley to take fi rst

place by four-tenths of a second. Then it was Esther’s turn

to show her mettle by touching the board fi rst in the 100m

backstroke ahead of Coline and Ashley.

The overall percentage of personal best timings for this

meet stood at a respectable 83.7%. While it is a relatively

high percentage, the signs show that we are currently short

of swimmers in the older age groups.

Swimmers should step forward to race. It’s a shame for

them to train hard for the year and not put their efforts to the

test by racing.

SS TAFF NN EWS

Inter-Club (Staff) Bowling League 2012: 9 November

SSC staff are Champs

by DANIEL NG

Staff teams from ten clubs took part

in the tournament hosted by Singapore

Recreation Club. It was tense right

from the start. After the fi rst game,

we found ourselves in third position,

with American Club leading the pack.

But our staff team comprising Lily Tan,

Mohamad Nazri, M. Rajendren and

Rahmat Sukiman stayed focused.

After a pep talk by Lily, our bowlers

came back fi ring on all four barrels.

We registered 713 pinfalls in the

second game to close the gap with the

leader. By the start of the third game

we were playing like men and women

possessed. We took over the lead

from the fi fth frame and the rest, as they

say, is history. For the records we went

on to register 728 pinfalls for the fi nal

game and were crowned Champions!

Staff Training and Upgrading

Our service staff picked

up some real GEMS

by VANESSA LEE

In September, we organized several

GEMS training programmes for our

staff. GEMS is the acronym for “Go

the Extra Mile for Service”. One of them

was “Salute, Smile & Connect with my

Guests”. The objective of this course

was to instil in our service staff passion,

commitment and a positive service

mindset. Those who took part had a

good learning experience!

The “Lead a Service Team” workshop

was for our supervisors and executives.

The modules included Planning for the

team to achieve Service Outcome,

Developing a Cohesive Team, Facilitating

Teams to achieve Results and

Coordinating with Management on

issues relating to service delivery.
