HOLBECH OF FARNBOROUGH Lt. Col. Laurence Holbech, CVO, DSO, OBE, MC (Grenadier Guards). Inter alia, ADC to the Governor of Southern Rhodesia, 1935 & 36 and Comptroller to the same from 1937 to 1947. 2nd son of Canon Hugh Holbech who was the 4th son of the Ven. Charles William Holbech, MA of Farnborough, hon. Canon of Worcester and late Archdeacon of Coventry. Born 6/3/1888, married, 29/6/1943, Frances Betty Eleanor, daughter of the late Sydney Charles Clayton of Salisbury (Harare) and had issue, Timothy Charles, born 30/1/1950. Quarterly, 1st and 4th, vert, six escallops, three, two and one, argent, 2nd, sable, a bend engrailed between six billets argent, 3rd, argent, a lion rampant gules, a border engrailed sable bezantée. (BLG, 1952) HOLFORD OF DUNTISH COURT Lt. Col. James Henry Edward Holford, CMG, DSO & bar. Served in Matabele Campaign, 1896. Born 22/12/1873, married, 2/7/1901, the Hon. Blanche Grosvenor, 2nd daughter of the 1st Baron Stalbridge and died 17/2/1936 having had issue. Eldest son of Thomas Holford of Castle Hill, Dorset who was the 7th son of John Holford of Rusholme, nr. Manchester. Quarterly ermine and erminois, upon a mount in base vert, a greyhound passant sable, collared Or. (BLG 1952) HOLMDEN Major Frank Alfred Amphlett Holmden, DSO, MB. Served as M.O. with the Mounted Infantry in the Matabele Campaign, 1893, in Bechuanaland and in the Boer War, 1899 - 1902. Present at the Siege of Mafeking (Queen's medal with two clasps, King's medal with two clasps, mentioned in despatches twice). Born 9/4/1861, m. 1stly, 5/6/1906, Elsie Mary (d. 11/9/1921) eldest daughter of Richard Andrews Foster and had issue. He married 2ndly, 5/6/1934, Nora, only daughter of Henry Cleveland Smith, MRCS, LRCP, and died 22/1/1935. Sable, a fess between two chevrons ermine. (BLG,1952) HOLMES À COURT Peter Worsley Holmes à Court, son of Henry Worsley Holmes à Court and greatgrandson of William Henry Ashe Holmes, 2nd Baron Heytesbury. Born 15/4/1 912 and married, 2/10/1936, Ethnee Celia, daughter of H.R. Cumming of Gwelo (Gweru). Quarterly, 1st and 4th, barry wavy of six, Or and azure; in a canton gules a lion of England, passant guardant Or, 2nd and 3rd, per fess Or, and paly of six, erminois and azure, in chief an eagle displayed sable, beaked and membered gules and charged on the body with two chevronels argent. (BP 1953) HOPE Adrian Lewis Hope, Lieutenant, BSAP. Served in South Africa 1900 - 02, including the siege of Mafeking. Born 3/10/1878, died unmarried, on active service, 17/6/1902. Great-great-grandson of Sir Archibald Hope, 9th Baronet of Craighall. Azure, a chevron Or between three bezants. (BP 1953). HOPKINS Harry Sinclair Hopkins, OBE. Son of William Pratt Hopkins. Born 1870. Formerly of Bulawayo. Azure, on a chevron between two pistols in chief and a lion rampant in base all Or, three roses gules. (FDAF). 61
