Till Ex Offi cio Bill Ward Art Dollosso is a retired police chief from the City of Colma, a two-acre town that is famous for digging things up. August 2006 San Francisco BULLETIN http://www.ggacc.org Golden Gate Angling & Casting Club Anglers Lodge Golden Gate Park THE ORIGINS OF THE C & H BAMBOO PURE CANE FLY RODS FROM SAN FRANCISCO By Art Dollosso Th e pedigreed origins of Tonkin cane rod building by members of the Golden Gate Angling and Club can be easily traced to competitive tournament casting. Fine and far off fl y casting at GGACC began with E. C. Powell’s semi-hollow cane slips that led to the clubs first national championship in 1937. Not to be outdone, Lou Stoner of the San Francisco-based Winston Rod Company contributed a fluted cane rod that Jon Tarantino would use to help garner six all around world championship titles. Future Fenwick rod Hall of Famer Jimmy Green, while working at Winston would be the fi rst Art Dollosso man to cast a fl y over two hundred feet in competition. Th e world’s greatest caster, Steve Rajeff , at the tender age of 13, hurled a fl y line with a San Francisco-built Winston unfathomable distances. Others, like Doug Merrick, of R. L. Winston, would torque competitive rod tapers into a fl y rod that would gently place a fl y on the water with a loving caress. Gary Howells could fi nish a fl y rod with a mirrored varnish that equaled a Purdy shotgun stock in beauty. These club members had several common denominators. Nearly all were championship casters and extraordinary anglers. More importantly they graciously contributed their time and knowledge to the club’s membership gratis. Th ese days this tradition, this heritage, continues through the good graces of two well known contributing members: Th omas Chin and Ruel Herico. Th omas Chin has spent his entire working life fashioning high grade dental ceramics and metals. Ruel Herico is a naturally intuitive engineer by profession. Th ese two have rendered their services to GGACC for over a decade. Each has actively participated on the clubs governing board, organized casting tournaments, won sanctioned casting events, and off ered instruction in fl y tying, casting, rod repair, and rod building. 1 1 Thomas Chin and Ruel Herico examine a fi nished rod C & H Cane Rods continued on page 2
