Gosh, another year end editors letter !!! Where does the time go? Zini River Estate is
filled with so many different, diverse and interesting people. Take the time this next
year to meet your neighbours (gosh what a novel idea, maybe even on both sides). Go
for long walks, take lots of photo’s (and send them into the photographic competition).
Go find that elusive bird, snap the Zebbies doing something unique, and go find more
interesting GOGGA’s, that was so interesting to read, you have a nature filled estate,
keep an eye out for all our animal, reptile and human friends!!
In this edition we meet the Schutte and Van Der Sandt family, thank you so much for
introducing yourselves to us and we look forward to meeting so many more neighbours.
The magazine is filled with so much interesting bits and bobs and we are so happy that
everyone love the new look of the mag !!! The stories just look so much better in A4, lol.
Storm does her thing again this edition and made me laugh, ponder and sniff back a
tear all at the same time, she is proof that Mtunzini has talent !!
So to a blessed 2013, the estate press team.
Lorinda, Justin, Daniel(our biggest blessing to date), Lyndie(and her new baby boy Janko),
Sharlene(our quiet, steadfast accounts & estate mags sales lady), Lucille(who has sadly
left us), Keith(our graphics intern who has been a God send), Maria and Liezel(our 2 new
rearing to go sales reps)
Wow, as another year
comes to an end
everything and everyone
is buzzing with yearend
fever. So many people complain about
the “silly season”, but to me it is the
season of festivities, excitement and
anticipation of all the unknown and
exciting things that might happen in
the New Year. Christmas is about love,
getting together and spending quality
time with your loved ones, friends
and even strangers at your holiday
destination
I often receive beautiful pictures from
our residents of various things they see
and experience on the Estate. I thought
The developers, trustees, management and
staff wish you all a very blessed Christmas
and a Prosperous New Year!
ESTATE MANAGERS DESK
a photographic competition would be
a wonderful idea and Shea and Colin
totally agreed. You will see more
details about this in the magazine and
some lovely pictures to kick-start the
competition. This is mostly about having
fun and to build up our picture library.
Come on, take out those cameras!
Community living is still doing it for me
– 100%. One of our very energetic
Iliza Bay residents, Lana, came up with
an exciting idea to do a communal
Christmas lunch at Iliza Bay. She soon
had many people excited and ideas
and menus and vibes are flying around.
We are all looking forward to a lovely
Christmas lunch without the schlep
of spending 2 days in the kitchen in
preparation.
I would like to wish all a wonderful
and blessed Christmas and may the
New Year be the best year ever filled
with magic and happiness!
God Bless!
ThE fESTIVE SEASON IS A-CALLIN’
YAY! It’s that time of year again
when we are reminded of why it
sucks to grow up! Just a few years
ago I was enjoying the adrenalinerush
feeling of running downstairs and
ripping open loads of presents, thoroughly
enjoying the spoils of my youth — these
days the only thing that I “enjoy”, come
Christmas, is the depletion of my bank
account!
It’s surprising how, at different stages of
your life, Christmas means different things to
you. As a kid it was all about the presents —
father Christmas and putting out biscuits and
beer for him, playing in the sun, holidays
and sweets, even though we knew why we
were celebrating the day. As a young adult
it was about getting the family-time over
with so that I could join my friends at the
lagoon or beach.
6 | Zini River Estate
As an adult it’s become all about family
and how much we can spoil our niece and,
recently, how I can repay my parents for all
the years of late nights and angst — and
then there’s my mom’s to-die-for cooking.
But one thing that is really noticeable is
that, without some rug-rats running around,
Christmas loses that festive, happy feeling.
The littlies are the ones who remind us
about what the “commercialised” Christmas
is about — waking up early, fun, laughter,
presents and a few bottles of Champagne
(for us obviously).
You’d think that in our household, because
we’re all adults and Mila’s at the age
where she doesn’t know what the hell is
happening, we’d be able to sleep in after
the pre-Christmas party, wouldn’t you? Not
so! My mom likes to tap into her inner child
and blast the music at about 7 o’clock in the
morning to get our lazy butts out of bed,
shouting as she goes, “Merry Christmas,
everyone!” After a few moans and groans
we’re up, watching the kids rip open their
presents and creating an almost-avalanche
of wrapping paper which threatens to
envelop the entire house, whilst the adults
unwrap their solitary Secret Santa gift.
from then on, it’s all about the food and, of
course, the party!
At the end of the day I may not be a very
“gifted” girl any longer, but I have certainly
learnt to appreciate the biggest gift of
all — that once again we are all healthy
and together and that I get to celebrate the
special day with the people that mean the
most to me… my family.
hope you have a very merry, very family
Christmas!

It still seems a bit unreal to introduce
ourselves as Mtunzini residents, but here
we are, almost a year later, and that
is what we are! (Well 9 months to be
precise.) In this last year we bid farewell to
27 years of corporate life, relocated from
Mpumalanga highveld to KZN, send our
youngest also off to varsity AND built our
dream house. So if one can believe “them”,
we are quite stressed out (ha-ha).
We are however, no newcomers to ZRE as
we have been coming down to Iliza Bay on
a regular base over the last 4 years. We
fell in love with this beautiful village and
especially the estate in 2008, and after first
choosing it as a holiday destination, we then
decided to make this a permanent lifestyle
change. (A rather fast decision).
Chris, an ex-corporate executive is now an
Energy consultant with Tongaat hulett, and
I was very lucky to find a half day position
in Mtunzini.
We love our new house, the sense of space,
the stunning views and establishing a garden
in this rewarding climate. We also love our
resident zebra’s even though they hampered
our initial efforts to settle the new lawn.
Chris, who is a keen fisherman and social
golfer, has temporarily given up these
pleasures for gardening.
The only drawback is that we miss our boys,
Christiaan (21) and francois (19), who are
both studying at Tukkies , and are looking
forward to the December holidays when
they and all our family will be coming down
to experience our new lifestyle.
Please stop by for a drink or some
gardening tips for us, if you are in our area.

PieTer & LiesL
vaN der saNdT
On the 27th of November 2011, Pieter & Liesl van der Sandt made the life changing decision to move to Zululand after
Pieter received a job offer at Bell Equipment Limited in Richards Bay. If the consequences of such a decision(giving up house,
resigning, giving up Liesl's practice, liaising with moving companies etc.) wasn't bad enough, they promptly got on a plane the
following day for a month long holiday in the United Kingdom! Suffice it to say that a lot of planning took place in various
Starbucks and Costa coffee houses!
Upon their return they flew down to Durban to come house hunting and only got as far as our beautiful village. After viewing some houses
in town they fell in love with Iliza Bay and immediately decided that this is the place to be. The rest, as they say, is history!
Liesl had a practice as a Specialist Child Trauma Therapist and after 14 grueling years in the field decided to retire(for now!). Pieter
worked as Group Company Secretary and Legal Counsel at the South African Medical Council before taking up the position of Group
Company Secretary at Bell.
They moved into number 9 Iliza Bay in March of this year and share they're home with they're adorable Scottish Terriers. The doggies were
extensively trained and used as in the field of Animal Assisted Therapy and now also enjoys the laid back life that Zini offers.Pieter and
Liesl are glad to have left the rat race of the city behind and cant get enough of the serenity of Mtunzini and the peace and quite of the
How would you like the idea of an annual amateur photographic competition? All the
owners and residents of Zini River Estate and Iliza Bay qualify as long as they are
amateurs. The rules are very basic – there will be no categories but the pictures must
be taken on ZRE exclusively. It could be people, pets, animals, nature or whatever
you like. It must be submitted in high definition and the entrant must stipulate the camera used
and settings. The entries will be received and kept on a quarterly basis and no pictures will be
carried over to the next quarter. Whatever is submitted will only be considered that quarter –
the quarters and submission dates run from this edition followed by 10 february 2013, 15 May
2013, 15 August 2013 and 1 November 2013.
The pictures will be judged alternatively by Anita de Villiers (the official photographer for ZRE)
and Kim Steinberg, a local resident, and the three best pictures received during the specific
quarter will be published in the fresh & Wild Magazine. The all over winners will be announced
in December 2013.
Nature iN ZiNi
What is that GoGGa on my Tree?
BY NEIL EVANS
The following picture was emailed to
me from Annemarie last week with the
question below:
“Could you please assist us with identifying
these goggas and whether they would ruin a
tree? If they are bad news to a garden, how
must one get rid of them?”
It was not the first time I had come across
these caterpillars, I remember growing up in
the Eastern Cape and around Christmas they
would devastate the foliage of our Cabbage
tree (Cussonia spicata) the tree however
never died and still grows today.
So after a quick search on the net I identified
them as the African Emperor caterpillars
the larval form of the equally spectacular
African Emperor Moth, Bunaea alcinoe.
from my childhood experience I reassured
Annemarie that they will not destroy the tree,
and from what I had read in the book Bring
12 | Zini River Estate
Nature Back to your Garden by Charles and
Julia Botha, caterpillars will actually stimulate
indigenous plants to grow new leaves, while
fertilising them with their droppings and those
of the birds that have been fed.
This reminded me of one of the reasons why
Eco Estates like ours insist on indigenous trees
and plants so they in turn can support the
indigenous insects, birds and other creatures
that rely on them for food, resting or nesting.
Above all, the authors say that we should
avoid what they call “lollipop gardens” with
exotic plants that need lots of water and
care, sweeps of sterile lawn and pesticides
that poison the bugs and the birds.
Another interesting fact is that the African
Emperor caterpillars are edible and highly
nutritious!
A second edition of the book Bring Nature
Back to your Garden, by Professor Julia
Botha and her husband Charles, is now
available and I would recommend it to all
avid indigenous gardeners.
The book illustrates how easy it is to work
with nature instead of against it. It promotes
a completely different mindset: instead of
growing foreign plants and killing perceived
pests, gardeners can benefit from planting
indigenous vegetation with the object of
actually attracting insects and other garden
wildlife.

summer is once again with us although
this year we have had more rainy
days than I can remember. The cooler
weather and wet conditions have led
to more waders feeding on the mudflats in the
Mtunzini Nature Reserve than the last couple
of years. The old road across the mudflats is
being done away with to allow more water
to flow into the flats as they were starting
to die. The recent dry period killed all the
“goggos” that these birds feed on so hopefully
with more water in the area this trend will be
reversed. We have already seen Common
Ringed Plovers as well as Terek Sandpipers as
well as the more common waders that appear
at this time of the year.
On a different tack the rains seem to have got
the birds in our garden into breeding mode.
We have a small waterfall in our garden and
we also put out some food for the birds. To
date we have had a Narina Trogon sitting on
the fence calling his loved one. Although there
is a lot of water about birds like the Purplecrested
Turaco and the Robin still use the
water for a nice bath, never mind the weather.
We have found that the main attraction is
the water and the food is secondary. So to
attract birds to your garden give a though to
putting in a water feature as this will not only
attract birds but will enhance your already
beautiful area.
Merry Xmas and a happy New Year.
i
hope you enjoy learning about our slithering friends. We all
know that when summer approaches, our snakes come out of
hibernation. Thankfully, the snakes found are harmless. The only
one we need to classify as “dangerous” is the Night Adder and
this is mainly due to its bite .
Remember: Please do not kill any creatures, including snakes on this
Estate. Should you encounter a snake, please do not try to catch it
Natal Green Snake: eats frogs and geckos ~ non venomous
This snake is identified by its round pupils, a white or yellow
underside, is particularly good at swimming and tree climbing
and its arboreal. Is active during the daytime.
14 | Zini River Estate
or prod it, but rather contact Security immediately. They will call
fritz or Wayne to remove the snake.
Should you wish to try a snake repellent you could try Snake Repel.
It’ s non toxic, pet friendly and approved by the Department of
Agriculture. In ending , here are a few snakes which could be found
on Estate.
Variegated/Spotted Bush Snake: eats lizards, chameleons and
geckos ~ non venomous
This snake is identified by its black speckling, its gold or orange
irises, a blue tongue with a black tip and is an expert climber. Is
active during the daytime

Please contact either fritz
on 082 658 8709 or
Wayne on 076 732 4499
should you need to have a
snake removed.
herald Snake: eats frogs and lizards ~ although its venom has
minor effects, it’s not dangerous at all
This snake can be identified by its olive green or grey body,
multiple white speckles, its distinctive black head and red, yellow,
white or black upper lip. This snake is actively mostly at night.
Olive house Snake: eats lizards, rats, mice and other snakes ~
non venomous
This snake can be identified by its uniform olive or grey
colouration, its small eyes and its strictly nocturnal lifestyle.
Green Water Snake: eats frogs, fish, lizards and possibly
grasshoppers ~ non venomous
This snake can be identified by its round pupils, a white or yellow
underside, its particularly good swimming and tree climbing ability
and are active during the daytime.
Brown house Snake: eats rats and mice, birds, bats, lizards, skinks
and frogs ~ non venomous but will bite if threatened.
This snake can be identified by its uniform brown colour, 2 light
coloured stripes which extend down the length of the head and its
preference for areas habitats close to human dwellings and are
nocturnal
Night Adder: eats frogs, tadpoles and insects ~ This adder species
has a mild cytotoxic venom which although non lethal can cause
tissue damage. There is an anti-venom available but it is seldom
required, in spite of this the venom is harmful and the situation
should still be monitored
This snake is often confused by the Puff Adder and can be
identified by its grey, olive or brown colour, its rhombic (diamond
shaped markings), its slightly keeled (rough) scales and the
distinctive V-marking on its head.
They are largely nocturnal, but are often seen in the early morning
or late afternoon
Brown Water Snake: eats frogs, tadpoles, small fish, rats and
mice ~ non venomous
This snake can be identified by its uniform olive or light brown
colouration, the pink or mother of pearl coloured underside, is a
great swimmer and has vertical pupils and are active during the
daytime.
Take a WeLL
deserved break
Everyone loves to take a summer holiday. So many people
lead stressful lives and taking a break every year could
be exactly what your body, soul and mind needs. Packing
your bags for travel and going away for a few days is an
excellent stress eliminator.
Travelling allows a person to have new experiences and see
more of the world, or even your own country. South Africa has
so many beautiful destinations to be discovered before you
venture off into the big wide world.
A holiday is good for one’s health and general wellbeing, and
many people claim that they are more productive at work
after being away. December always evokes festive feelings,
and in our country we are lucky enough to celebrate Christmas
in summer. If you have been stressed lately, then a summer
holiday is definitely well deserved, so pack your bags and
get ready to unwind.
Going away also means that you get to spend time with
your family, and connect with your loved ones as you make
wonderful memories together. You will surely return refreshed
and renewed, ready to tackle the new year.
FONdUe…a
FUN NiGHT iN
Staying at home this festive season is not such a bad idea
when you think about the crowds you will be avoiding….and it
doesn’t have to be a boring night in, make it fun with a fondue
dinner party.
fondues are thought to have originated from Switzerland but
the word fondue comes from the french word fonder, meaning
‘to melt’. The dish was a way of using up old hardened cheese.
fondues are a lot of fun and quite easy to prepare. There are
several different types of fondues, the traditional fondue is
a cheese fondue with small pieces of bread for dipping. Oil
fondues are more popular today, as the dipping possibilities
are endless…you can use meat, nuggets, potatoes and
vegetables. All you will need for a fondue party is the right
equipment and your ingredients.
Mouth-watering dessert fondues.
There are a number of dessert fondues that can be served to
end your fun fondue night in. The most popular is chocolate
where an assortment of fruit, marshmallows and meringues are
dunked into the delicious melted chocolate.
MTUNZINI COUNTRY CLUB NEWS
THe GYM is a GO!
Many of you will be wondering
about all the activity at the
Country Club. Big changes are
under way that will upgrade
the facilities available to members. (Also
remember that as a homeowner on Zini River
Estate you are entitled to join the club without
paying the joining fee).
The main changes at the club are:
A lovely new deck with a view over the
lagoon - which will be completed in time for
the holidays.
The new Gym! Opening in January 2013
in the downstairs area; the gym will be
operated as a private business in the
downstairs section of the club, with significant
discounts for club members (equivalent to
social membership!)
In the new year further changes will occur
with the development of a braai-lapha,
relocation of the children’s facilities to the
upper level and – if we can raise the funding
– a small swimming pool.
In the meanwhile the club has been buzzing,
with lots of new members this year and lots
of new activities.
QUiZ NiTe
A halloween theme quiz night was held
and a good turn-out of 8 teams lead to an
enjoyable and noisy evening. Well done
to Kim Steinberg and Wayne Viviers who
were the winning team (significantly aided
by a bonus 5 points as the only people
who dressed to theme!) – finally knocking
Seonaid, Richard and Jan off the victor’s
podium that they have dominated this year.
kids TriCk Or TreaT
following on from the grown-ups’ halloween,
the kids went trick or treating – starting
and ending with games and water bombing
wars against the parents. huge fun was had
and the Country Club would like to extend
its thanks to all the people who were brave
enough to host 30 yelling, sugar-rushed kids.
Cindy Reddinger’s ‘eyeballs on a stick’ were
a particular hit with the boys!
sQUasH Ladies seCTiON
The squash ladies section has established a
‘social ladder’ with 13 members at present.
Novice and intermediate players play 2
opponents per month. In addition on the
second Wednesday of every month a social
squash evening is played. This is usually
enormous fun with the ladies competing to
‘beat the coach’ followed by Wednesday
supper at the club.
Many thanks to Ian Thompson who makes
these coaching evenings such enormous fun.
Anyone keen to join please contact the club.
