Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church DeLand, Florida January 2013

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, the glory of
the Lord is risen on you.” (Isaiah 60:1)
The music is stuck in my head from our Lessons and Carols Service last Sunday. The
choir is so “smitten” by it that we are reprising it at our 7:00 Christmas Eve service. By the
time you read this, of course, all of that will be “ancient” (sooo last year)!
It is ancient, though! Classic…timeless…prophetic words of hope and joy.
If you are reading this, we obviously survived the end of the world as “predicted” by
the Mayans. We have either averted the “fiscal cliff” or free-fallen off of it, for better or
worse. So now what? We can go forth from the manger to tell everyone what we have
seen and heard. God has acted in a new, radical way to save His people and the world!
There was Jesus, a helpless infant in a smelly, noisy cattle stall. The same Jesus who would
live among as God-in-the-flesh. The same Jesus, still present today in our neighborhoods.
The same Jesus, who will come again in glory to proclaim the kingdom without end.
Guided by the star, they found him whose praise the ages sound.
We too have a star to guide us, which forever will provide us
With the light to find our Lord, with the light to find our Lord.
2
(ELW #301, V. 5)
May the light of Epiphany break forth for you and shatter the darkness of gloom and despair.
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Art

1. Pastor Art made an announcement that Matthew, our organist,
turned in his resignation. A motion was made to post
a job availability notice for the organist position as soon as
possible.
2. Prices were obtained to purchase two new computers for
the office and a laptop for the pastor as well as updated software.
A motion was made to use undesignated Memorial
Funds to pay for this much-needed equipment.
3. A new "Love Gift" statement was written and accepted by the council. In order for the congregation to protect
itself from possible litigation, the council has established a policy that "Love Gifts" will not be accepted or
given to employees through the church. For more detailed information, please visit the church’s website at
www.faithlutherandeland.org.
plan to be at this very important meeting. Ministries should have their annual reports turned into Julie before a
set date that Julie will post later.
6. Julie would like each member of the council and the
congregation to fill out an updated contact information
sheet. These yellow sheets are located in the
“Communication Kiosk” area in the Fellowship Hall (the
windowsill).
7. It was announced that Michelle Hermann was going
tell people about the need for donations to the Children's
Home Society here in DeLand. This home for
children from broken and undesirable home environments
operates mainly through donations.
The Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ
(Reprinted from an article at www.Christianity.about.com)
The Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ is one
of the oldest Christian feasts, though, throughout the centuries,
it has celebrated a variety of things. Epiphany
comes from a Greek verb meaning "to reveal," and all of
the various events celebrated by the Feast of the Epiphany
are revelations of Christ to man.
Date: January 6. (In most countries and dioceses, the celebration
is transferred to the Sunday between January 2
and January 8, inclusive.)
Readings: Isaiah 60:1-6; Psalm 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13;
Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6; Matthew 2:1-12
Prayers: Collect for the Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord
Jesus Christ (from the Mass of St. Pius V): "O God, Who by
the guidance of a star didst this day reveal Thine onlybegotten
Son to the Gentiles, mercifully grant that we, who know Thee now by faith, may be so led as to behold with our eyes the
beauty of Thy majesty. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy
Ghost, God, world without end. Amen."
Other Names for the Feast: Theophany, Three Kings Day
History:
Like many of the most ancient Christian feasts, Epiphany was first celebrated in the East, where it has been held from the beginning
almost universally on January 6. Today, among both Eastern Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, the feast is known as Theophany—the
revelation of God to man.
Epiphany originally celebrated four different events, in the following order of importance: the Baptism of the Lord; Christ's first miracle,
the changing of water into wine at the wedding in Cana; the Nativity of Christ; and the visitation of the Wise Men or Magi. Each
of these is a revelation of God to man: At Christ's Baptism, the Holy Spirit descends and the voice of God the Father is heard, declaring
that Jesus is His Son; at the wedding in Cana, the miracle reveals Christ's divinity; at the Nativity, the angels bear witness to
Christ, and the shepherds, representing the people of Israel, bow down before Him; and at the visitation of the Magi, Christ's divinity
is revealed to the Gentiles—the other nations of the earth.
Eventually, the celebration of the Nativity was separated out, in the West, into Christmas; and shortly thereafter, Western Christians
adopted the Eastern feast of the Epiphany, still celebrating the Baptism, the first miracle, and the visit from
the Wise Men. Thus, Epiphany came to mark the end of Christmastide—the Twelve Days of Christmas,
which began with the revelation of Christ to Israel in His Birth and ended with the revelation of
Christ to the Gentiles at Epiphany.
Over the centuries, the various celebrations were further separated in the West,
and now the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated on the Sunday after January 6, and
the wedding at Cana is commemorated on the Sunday after the Baptism of the
Lord.
In many parts of Europe, the celebration of Epiphany is at least as important as the
celebration of Christmas. In Italy and other Mediterranean countries, Christians
exchange gifts on Epiphany—the day on which the Wise Men brought their gifts to
the Christ Child—while in Northern Europe, it's not unusual to give gifts on both
Christmas and Epiphany (often with smaller gifts on each of the twelve days of
Christmas in between).

On the edge of a new year, Lord, teach us
again to order our priorities and number our
days and hours. Teach us to trust—life, history, one another,
You, so that even in the gray and gloomy days,
when the ceiling is low, we may trust the star that enabled
wise men of old to live in hope and proclaim the
divine promises which call us on in Jesus Christ. Amen.
This quarter we are collecting the following items:
Four 70-sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper approximately
8” X 10½”; no loose-leaf paper
One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side
and inches on the other
One pencil sharpener
One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades
work well)
Five unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with
a rubber band
Five black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); secure together
with a rubber band
One box of 16 or 24 crayons
One 2½” eraser
One sturdy drawstring backpack-style cloth bag approximately
14” X 17” with shoulder straps (no standard backpacks)
Thank you! Please bring these items to the church
office or mark them for LWR kits and leave in the
church kitchen
Located just
inside the
Fellowship Hall,
it is another opportunity
to communicate
to the Pastor, Congregation President, Choir Director,
whoever. Please be constructive with your suggestion,
criticism (complaint?) and put your name so
we know who to respond to. Let’s keep our communication
honest, truthful and Christ-like. Thank you!
1. Pray for him regularly and build his spiritual
power.
2. Speak well of him and build his reputation.
He has weak and strong points. His influence
will depend upon which of these you stress.
3. Resolve to encourage him and build his morale.
4. Listen to him and help build his pulpit power.
Full pews challenge a pastor to prepare and
deliver great sermons. Empty pews discourage
him.
5. Resolve to cooperate with him and thus build
his leadership.
6. Follow God’s plan of church financing
(tithing), and build the church treasury. It is
much easier for your pastor to minister when
the financial report is not in the red.
7. The greatest resolution for you and your pastor
is to resolve to follow the Christ he preaches
by the Holy Spirit.
Commemorate it by giving the weekly Worship Folders
(bulletins) or the monthly Sanctuary Candle. Call the
Faith receives money every time the bin gets
emptied, so fill ‘er up! Bring your paper, shredded
or intact, as often as you wish. The bin is open for
drop-offs all day, every day. You can deposit all
types of paper, even if it has staples. This is a great
way to raise money for Faith while saving the planet!
Please deposit paper only; no plastic, tin, or
other metal. Also, please do not deposit cardboard
or phone books. Thank you!

Just as taking inventory is necessary in the business
world, it is also required in the spiritual realm. The following
spiritual check-up was composed by W.E.
Slaughter:
1. Am I known as a Christian where I work?
2. Is Christ more loved or respected because of the
way I live?
3. Do those who know me best believe in me most?
4. Do I criticize the church and other Christians in
front of my children?
5. Do people know me as one whose conversation is
constantly censorious?
6. Is it possible that I claim to be a Christian and nurse
revenge?
7. Do I find time every day for Bible study? For unhurried
prayer?
8. Can I work with other people? Can other people
work with me?
9. Have I a secret longing to be first? Or can I truly say
I don’t care who is second, third, or fourth, so long
as Christ is first?
10. What can I do now that I could not do five years
ago? Introduce another person to Christ? Distinguish
God’s guidance from my own desires? Face
death unafraid? Really enjoy an hour of meditation?
