Introduction<br />

About this Unit<br />

This Unit — Health, safety and security at work in the laundry and dry-cleaning industry<br />

(HS2) — is designed to help you develop responsibility for your own health, safety and<br />

security in the workplace, and to monitor the workplace for hazards. Your role may involve:<br />

• contributing to the safety and security in the workplace<br />

• taking action in the event of an incident<br />

• raising the alarm<br />

• following correct procedures for shut down and evacuation<br />

• using emergency equipment correctly and safely<br />

• monitoring the workplace for hazards<br />

As a competent person, you must:<br />

• take action in the event of fire, emergencies or accidents<br />

• monitor the workplace for hazards<br />

• contribute to maintaining the security of the workplace and its contents<br />

Key areas of knowledge and understanding<br />

The Unit will help you develop the following key areas of knowledge and understanding:<br />

• Where alarms, emergency exits, escape routes, emergency equipment and assembly<br />

points are located.<br />

• What the alarm sounds like.<br />

• What hazardous substances are used in the workplace, and methods making safe or<br />

reducing their danger in the event of an accident.<br />

• How to handle and store hazardous substances.<br />

• What the most likely accidents and emergencies are in the workplace, and how to<br />

deal with them.<br />

• Who the nominated First Aiders are.<br />

• How to maintain security to cover personnel, public and premises.<br />

• Correctly use the various types of PPE in your premises.<br />

• Comply with procedures in the event of one of the following types of emergencies:<br />

— Fire<br />

— Contamination (eg from leaks, spillages, gas emissions)<br />

— Accident and injuries to persons<br />

— Explosions (eg gas)<br />
