Sheffield Cinches Up $50,000 Win - Barrel Racing

BARREL RACING REPORT - Fast Horses, Fast News since 2007 - Volume 5, Issue 12 www.barrelracingreport.com March 22, 2011 Sheffi eld Cinches Up $50,000 Win THE RUNDOWN: JODY SHEFFIELD HORSE: Skip The Finances “Zoey” Bay Mare, 7 Years Old, 15 hands BIT: Snaffl e Gag Bit HEADGEAR: None SADDLE: Neil Merrill Barrel Saddle PAD: Classic Equine ESP Pad LEG GEAR: Classic Equine front boots & bell boots, nothing on back legs GRAIN: Ultium & Oats SUPPLEMENTS: Just some basic minerals, Stride 180 Joint Supplement HAY: Grass/Alfalfa Hay ADDITIONAL HORSE CARE & SHOEING: Eventers for her front shoes and regular rims on the back feet. Once in a while I use magnetic blankets and when she needs it I use the Accuscope machine. I also haul her in Soft Ride boots if she is going to be hauled very hard. TRAINING & RIDING STYLE: She is just a push kind of horse, she rarely ever overruns or hits a barrels. When we aren’t competing, she doesn’t see the barrels very often. My husband (Jesse) ropes on her and we try to get her in the mountains. Zoey likes to keep busy so we try to do things that challenge her mentally. They say idle hands are the devil’s playground and that defi nitely pertains to her so we try to keep her as busy mentally as we can. BRR: Was this the Biggest Win of your Career? Sheffi eld: By far! I am really proud of winning Pendleton because it was my fi rst big win but monetarily this was defi nitely the biggest! BRR: Can you explain what it was like when you Realized you had just won the $50,000? Sheffi eld: I, like everyone else thought Sherry was going to win it since she had won every round going into the fi nals. I was still leading after I watched Lisa and Brittany so as we waited to watch Sherry go I was just happy to be second. When Sherry missed her fi rst barrel a little, Brittany Pozzi turned around and told me, “You just won Houston!” I said no she will still get it but, when the time came up I had won. I had a really good day leading up the Finals, the fi rst run (qualifer for the Finals) they had removed a wall behind the third barrel so Zoey went a little wide on the third, it was in the middle of nowhere but I knew my horse would be ready for her third the second run. Zoey learns from every run so I knew she would be ready in the Finals. I felt really good about where I was with my horse and my runs. I was thrilled to be out fi rst in the Finals, I was up fi rst 3 times DASH FOR CASH SI 114 FINANCIALLY SI 98 DOTTIES TEARS SI 91 SKIP THE FINANCES 2004 BAY MARE SKIPBAR CRYSTOLA SKIP CHRIS COY HOTTERS DOT RIDER: JODY SHEFFIELD; OWNER/BREEDER: JESSE SHEFFIELD ROCKET WRANGLER SI 97 FIND A BUYER (TB) REB’S POLICY (TB) SPANISH TEARS SKIP BAR SUPREME GOLD FINGERS NOTE SPANISH ETCH SKIPUN FLAME through my series, fi rst in my semifi nals, fi rst out on the ground in both the prelim and Finals Shootout. I am not sure if it has really hit me yet but I did deposit the check today. It is just overwhelming to think about all of it and it is just coming to me bit by bit. It is pretty surreal to me right now. BRR: What is it like knowing you have basically locked up your fi rst NFR birth? Sheffi eld: To think that I get to run in the Thomas & Mack is amazing, a dream come true. That one run Saturday turned around a lot of things in my life. It is just all very exciting. BRR: How does this win change your rodeo plans for the year? Sheffi eld: The win will allow me to stay in my normal circuit rodeos and just add a few of the other rodeos that I’ve been wanting to go to. If I would have won second & the 20k or so then I would have had to decide if I was going to rodeo hard and try to make the NFR or stay home at the circuit rodeos and see what happened. So it was a real blessing that I won the $50k so I can stay with my plan! NOTES: Not only is Zoey a hard working 7 year old barrel horse, she is also a rope horse and a grandma! Jody’s husband Jesse heeled on Zoey’s mother and also heels, heads, and has even tied down a few calves on Zoey. Also, Zoey was bred as a 2 year old and has a 4 year RodeoHouston Continued on Page 4
