SHTM Education and A New Page in Business Education

• With the Teaching Hotel in place, SHTM education has the

promise to bring hospitality education to a new height.

• When run properly and debugged thoroughly, it will serve as

a teaching company (a living laboratory) many leading

business schools want to have but up to now they still

cannot find a way to have it.

• Thus, if all things work out, it will make a significant

contribution to both hospitality education and business

education.

CUHK Business School School of Hotel and Tourism Management

27 October 2012

In Search of Excellence

• Those ready for integrated business education, i.e. those

with analytical mind, decision making ability, risk taking

ability, implementation ability and integrity

• Especially for those who

- believe in servant leadership, holding an hospitality

orientation towards others

- treasure the power of a theory that is grounded in best

practices

CUHK Business School School of Hotel and Tourism Management

27 October 2012

Three Practical Tests

• Have a genuine interest in the hospitality industries, i.e.

tourist destination, airline, hotel, restaurant, theme park,

cruise, convention center, travel agent, real estate, etc.

• Meet the minimum entrance requirement.

• Have a good composite score according to the program

admission formula.

CUHK Business School School of Hotel and Tourism Management

27 October 2012

Program Admission Formula - An Example

The Program Admission Formula

computes a Composite Score based on

Academic Examination Result (75%) and

Admission Interview Result (25%).

• Academic Examination Result = 4 core subjects (Chinese Language, English

Language, Mathematics, Liberal Studies) and 1 elective subject at a minimum of

33223

• Candidates' performance in extra elective subjects will be considered in the

selection process, and bonus points will be awarded to up to 2 such subjects

Assume a student gets the following results in the HKDSE in 2012:

• Chinese Language (5), English Language (5), Mathematics (5), Liberal Studies

(4), elective Subject (4) - The student’s academic examination result in this

example is (5+5+5+4+4)/5=4.6

• The admission interview result in this example is 4.5

• Thus, the composite score in this example is 4.6 x 75% + 4.5 x 25% = 4.575
