Hello Cattlemen! Welcome to the 2013 Edge of the West Bull Sale! We sincerely appreciate your interest in the sale. We 

look forward to visiting with you and anticipate your appraisal of what is the highest quality set of bulls we have off ered 

to date. It has been a defi nite roller coaster in the beef industry over the past year. With many areas of the country experiencing 

a severe drought, it reminds us to be thankful of the gift s we have received. The good news is catt le prices remain 

incredibly strong and the southern plains have recently received some much needed moisture in the form of snow. 

All of the sale partners in the Edge of the West have very similar philosophies in breeding catt le and we think you will 

agree aft er viewing a very uniform, impressive set of bulls. We feel demand for moderate, effi cient, high performance catt le 

will continue to rise. The SimGenetic bulls in this off ering will sire the right kind of feeder catt le and replacement females 

that will be necessary to produce a profi t for their owners. 

All of the bulls were fed at the Kaelberer Ranch since the end of November. They were worked up to a 52 mcal diet consisting 

of oats & peas, distiller’s grain, corn and grass hay, alfalfa hay and corn silage. Our philosophy has always been to 

develop the bulls and not fatt en them. We feel this diet ensures their longevity and structural correctness. All of the bulls 

will have a breeding soundness exam prior to the sale, including scrotal measurements and a semen test. All the bulls 

selling will have passed a semen test and guaranteed to be sound breeders. This year we have designated several bulls for 

homozygous polled and homozygous black testing. These bulls have either been DNA tested or determined to be this way 

through pedigree analysis. We are in the process of testing more bulls now and those results will be available prior to the 

sale.

Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation/EPDs 

To achieve highly accurate EPDs, large amounts of data are required. With a total of 

over nine million records from the American Simmental, Red Angus, Maine Anjou and 

Chianina Associations, as well as the Canadian Angus and Simmental Associations, the 

American Simmental Association (ASA) has amassed the largest multi-breed database 

in the industry by a long stretch. 

To accelerate the breed’s advancement in the area of genetic evaluation, the ASA recently 

teamed with the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) on a joint venture 

to perform and improve multi-breed genetic evaluation. Updated EPDs, refl ecting this 

partnership were released with the last ASA Sire Summary. The new Simmental and 

Simmental Hybrid averages are:

The Fall 2012 ASA Genetic Evaluation marks the fi rst time 

major breeds have expressed their EPDs on a common base 

(i.e., the same scale). The common base was a natural evolution 

for the RAAA/ASA genetic evaluation partnership. 

Though forming a common base will initially lead to some 

confusion, the boards of both organizations unanimously 

agreed that it was a positive step for the beef industry — a 

step that allows producers to directly compare genetic predictions 

from the largest multi-breed database in the world. 

As with any progress, there is change. Breeders and commercial 

producers will need to adjust to the new base. 

Much like converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius, it may be 

a struggle at fi rst; however, over time we will all grow accustomed 

to the new scale. For example look at the average 

EPDs of purebreds shown in this table. 

The change to the base does not change the evaluation of 

animals; it just changes the magnitude of the EPD. It has 

the same impact on all animals. Be sure to use the new percentile 

tables to develop a “feel” for the new EPD base.
