Failure of Continuous brakes on Passenger Trains.
General Rule 165.
In the event of a failure of the Automatic brake on a passenger train,
rendering it necessary to control the train by means of the hand brake, the
defective vehicle must be detached at the first point the train reaches where
there is siding accommodation, so that the automatic brake on the train
may be again brought into use. If this is impracticable, a brake van must
be the last vehicle for the rest of the journey.
If the defect is on the engine the last vehicle in this case must also be the
brake van.
When owing to the Automatic Brake being defective, it is necessary to
control the train by means of the hand brake and only one guard is with
the train, an additional man must be provided at the first available point,
who must travel in the front van to assist in braking the train. ( O . 2758).
AUTOMATIC COUPLINGS SEPARATING.
General Rule 165.
When the automatic couplings become divided they must be kept as far as
possible in the condition in which they are found, so as to assist in discovering
what is wrong when the responsible officials make their examination.
TYING OF SHEET STRINGS ON OPEN CARRIAGE TRUCKS

General Rules 135 and 90.
Sheet strings on Open Carriage Trucks must be kept well clear of all
Westinghouse Brake Taps, so that .there is no possibility of their closing the
tap when the vehicle is running. Examiners and others should watch this
at Exchange Points with other Companies. ( O . 6305).
