Vienna November Meet-Up: Michael Waltner on the "state of faith" in America
What is the "state of faith" in American society today? What role does religion play in politics and are we
really as tolerant as we profess to be? How do you feel about the "Ground Zero Mosque"? Popular DAA
member, Mike Waltner, will try to answer these and more questions about "Faith and Society" at the
November Member Meet-up. Mike Waltner holds a BA in Religious Studies from Penn State University,
and a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary at Columbia University in New York City. He is
formerly Director of Operations at the Interfaith Center of New York and was a Democratic candidate
for US Congress.

Issues, Actions
Thank you voters, volunteers and supporters!
The “mother of all mid-terms” is over. Of course we are not pleased but it could also have been worse.
DA Austria wants to first of all thank all the people who voted in the mid-term elections. If you
encouraged others to vote, we thank you for all you do to support dialog and democracy in America! And
thank you to all the people who supported our get-out-the-vote registration efforts. If you helped at an
event, did voter registration, made a monetary contribution or attended an event in support of our
efforts — thank you. DA Austria is an all-volunteer organization and we need your continued support in
order to survive and thrive.
Stanley Hale, DAA Media Contact, appeared on Club 2
In case you missed it, here is a link to the ORF Club 2 round-table talk that covered the mid-term
elections. DAA’s Media Contact, Stanley Hale, was invited to participate in the discussion along with the
former Austrian ambassador to the US, the managing editor of Der Standard, the musical director of the
Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the General Secretary of the Hayek Institute in Vienna, and an African Ph.D
student from Howard University in Washington. http://tvthek.orf.at/programs/1283-Club-2

DAA Review
Steven Hill comes to Vienna and Salzburg
US political analyst and author Steven Hill gave riveting talks to DAA in Vienna on October 9, to the
Renner Institute on October 11 and to DAA in Salzburg on October 12. Attendees at all events were very
appreciative, and asked a wide range of challenging questions. Read Steven’s blog about his 18-city
European speaking tour at: www.washingtonmonthly.com/hows_europe_doing.
We want to thank the following volunteers in Vienna for their help: Bruce, Harold, Marisa, Courtney,
Danny, Lino, Renee and Gail. And the following volunteers in Salzburg: Benjamin Wright, Tim Hubler and
Dr. Kimberley Coles and Dr. Steven Wuhs from the Bildungsverein der Universität von Redlands.
For Hill’s comparisons of US and European political, military, economic and environmental policies, and
his thoughts on what the US could learn from Europe read his latest book Europe’s Promise: Why the
European Way is the Best Hope in an Insecure Age or find shorter articles and interviews at
www.europespromise.org or www.steven-hill.com.
Election night party in Vienna on November 2
Call us a die-hard group! DA members in Vienna convened for drinks and discussion on November 2 at
Pickwick’s. Although it was not an all-night party as it was in 2008, we had a good time socializing and
talking about what the results might be. Thanks to everyone who attended and supported the cause!
November Meet-Up in Salzburg on November 5
DAA members in Salzburg met on November 5 for their monthly meeting. Great group with lots of new
faces were present to discuss the election results as well as what consequences — of losing the House —
can be expected in the next two years.
