AUTHORITY ZERO - THE TIPPING POINT
Project Info:
Project Overview:
-Fifth album for the Mwsa, AZ natives since their 1994 debut
-Now featuring Sam Sellers on drums (Good Riddance)
-Running ads to promote on Absolute Punk, Alt Press and more
-RIYL: 311, Sublime, Buck O Nine
Authority Zero is a internationally recognized, touring band. Started in Mesa, Arizona in 1994. Compared to Rise Against, Pennywise and Sublime,
Authority Zero’s sound has enabled them to tour with a variety of bands. With their CD, The Tipping Point , Authority Zero maintain their COMMITMENT
TO THE MUSIC. Members of AZ are always looking to give the musical gyroscope a healthy twirl. It might confuse the shit out of the genre police, but the
audience and fans are looking for that, they are much more sophisticated today.
“The excitement and anticipation for the new album ‘The Tipping Point’ that I have is unparalleled,” says vocalist Jason DeVore. “The closest thing I can
think of is how I felt when we first released A Passage In Time so many years ago. You feel you’re really doing something right when you and the
members of your band are rocking out to it like it’s their new favorite album that just came out. That’s how it should feel. The energy, the intensity, and
collaborative sounds along with a new realm of production working with Cameron Webb has made it extremely intense. It’s a taste of the old school and
slingshots into new areas and veins of music we have yet to tap into as well as some surprises. It’s an album based on the idea of tipping the scales,
unity, causing ruckus while forging on, and the history and future of all who have been involved and will for years to come. We’re fired up.”
Eighteen years into their storied career began and Authority Zero has seen their fair share of ups-anddowns. After original guitarist and longtime friend Bill
Marcks left the band in 2008, members have seemed to come and go, but the band and music has carried on. Recently, after the release of their last
album, Stories of Survival, guitarist Zach Vogel departed the band to return to his home in Wisconsin for more family time. Shortly after that and with the
turn of the New Year in 2011, long
time friend and drummer Jim Wilcox also left the band to pursue other endeavors.
At this point, many bands would have folded under the pressure of lineup changes and setbacks, but the rest of the band carried on by inviting new
recruits and Amarillo, TX native Brandon Landelius on guitar along with legendary punk drummer, Sean Sellers (Good Riddance, Real McKenzies) on
drums to restructure and complete the group. With their fifth studio album The Tipping Point, Authority Zero is determined to carry on with perseverance
and dedication to spread their music and message to fans around the globe.
Bored Nothing is the brainchild of Melbourne musician Fergus Miller. He's been recording most of his songs at home on a simple 4 track recorder,
combining influences of '90s slacker and grunge with sweet melodies reminiscent of the late Elliott Smith.
This is his debut album which collects together most of the recordings he has done over the past 12 months and released on cassettes and indie EP's, as
well as uploaded to Bandcamp and sites such as Unearthed. Bored Nothing is now a full live band and has supported the likes of Best Coast, Beach
House and Jeff The Brotherhood. Look for a lengthy North American tour in the Summer of 2013.
Project Overview:
Debut album from Los Angeles underground supergroup
Features Peter Walker (Eulogies), Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, Nine Inch Nails), Denny Weston (Earlimart, Kooks) and James King (Fitz and the
Tantrums, M83)
First single "Pick Me Up" already featured at Rolling Stone's Daily Download in late Feb!
RIYL: Sonic Youth, John Zorn, skronky punk
The thing about chapters — as any bibliophile will tell you — is that one has to end before a new one can begin.
That’s where Peter Walker found himself one afternoon, as he waited to pick up his nephew at his alma mater. His previous outfit, Eulogies, had reached
its logical conclusion — but Walker’s artistic journey was nowhere near finished. The page just needed to be turned.
Strangely, it was the literal turning of pages that helped accomplish just that. As he killed time, Walker reached for a book with an interesting cover and a
curious title — the young adult novel “King Dork.”
“It looked like the cover of ‘Catcher in the Rye’ that’d been erased and covered in graffiti, like someone would do in a high school class,” he says. “So I
picked it up and started reading it and I loved it. I started getting into more teen fiction and it got me really thinking about those years of my life and I
started writing songs. I started to conceptualize this whole project based on that kind of experience.”
And so Broadheds was born. Armed with words about angst, innocence, hope and infatuation, Walker went back to his own adolescence when creating
the music. “I knew it was going to be this Ramones kind of aggressive thing because that’s where I was at when a was a teen – that kind of awkwardness
and discomfort and the tough growth that happens. It just seems like it needs that kind of power.”
It also required the right group of compatriots to execute Walker’s vision – serious professionals who could commit themselves to the freedom and
abandonment of a project whose guiding principles were lack of pressure, simplification and not looking beyond a one-off, studio-based art project.
Finding those individuals wasn’t hard. Drummer Denny Weston, Jr. had been in Walker’s orbit since the first Eulogies album, and his time playing in The
Kooks made him the perfect candidate for the project. Bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen (who has toured with Beck and Nine Inch Nails, amongst others)
was brought in to help produce and quickly became a crucial ingredient. And after unsuccessfully imagining how to get a clarinet happening on an indierock/punk
record, Walker wisely set his sights on a sax player. Fitz and the Tantrums’ James King was the obvious choice.
Getting all four players in one room proved to be the tricky – yet essential – part. After briefly considering having Meldal-Johnsen overdub his parts, it was
decided to wait until the stars (and schedules) aligned. As a quick listen to the recordings attests and as cliché as Walker knows that it sounds, the
amazing energy and fun created in two half-days of rehearsals and three half-days of recording – of letting go and not over-thinking – was magic. The
violence and beauty of raw teenage energy was achieved.
The entire album bristles with the jittery restlessness of adolescence, reverberates with the jaded hopefulness of youth, occasionally bursts with frustration
– and comes together with the easy, almost relaxed assurance of four musicians at the top of their game. Check out the unhinged nature of the sax in
“Outta Reach,” the ease of how the band gels together (gang vocals included) in “Pick Me Up” and the ska/rock (or is that punk?) fusion between the
verse and chorus of “Tomorrow I Might Feel The Same” for starters.
It should be duly noted that the album was also inspired, encouraged and eventually documented by the visual artist Mark Todd. Not only is his artwork
featured in the 64-page book that accompanies the album (and works nicely as a stand-alone piece); he was an integral part of the recording process,
providing an evolving visual landscape in the studio as the record was recorded.
The release of the album was intended to be the end of this chapter, but sometimes the conclusion is a surprise – even to its writer. Walker’s no-pressure
experiment produced such a rush of creative energy that his cohorts demanded that they perform the material live, visuals included.
“That was the best feeling – the best thing they could’ve given me or that could’ve happened,” Walker beams. “Just that they felt that way. That was like I
had gotten my reward.”
And while he states that a handful of live shows will now serve as the end of the Broadheds chapter, Walker’s story is nowhere near The End. “The next
thing — I don’t know what it’s going to be,” he muses, “but I’m working on that now, just writing.”
GAUDI - IN BETWEEN TIMES
Project Info:
Project Overview:
-New album from the Worldwide dub specialist
-Fantastic collaborations on this release, including Michael Rose (Black Uhuru), Jahmai, Lee "Scratch" Perry and more
-The album fluctuates between vocal caollaborations and stunning instrumental cuts
-Has been solidifying his reputation by performing worldwide in over 10 countries in the past two years
Gaudi, as his tour schedule will attest to, is a man in demand. The last few years have seen him increasingly prove his credentials as a respected
producer and live artist who can ensure a maximum capacity crowd. In the last year alone he has performed at over 60 venues and festivals across 10
different countries and to surprisingly diverse audiences- from roots reggae aficionados at "One Love", the UK’s no.1 reggae festival to a once in a lifetime
performance at the Pyramids in Egypt.
His previous releases have laid a strong, worldwide foundation for him. The internationally acclaimed album ‘Dub Qawwali’ (Six Degrees Records, 2007)
earned him a nomination for a prestigious BBC World Music Award and his last album ‘No Prisoners’ (Six Degrees Records, 2010), firmly established his
more up-tempo credentials amongst international audiences and on dance floors around the world.
His newest work, In Between Times is a great listen from start to finish. It is a strong collection of 12 engaging tracks with a satisfying balance between
vocal tracks and instrumentals that are brought artfully together to form a sonic journey greater than the sum of its parts.
The new album features a noteworthy collection of artists, many of them pioneers in their respective musical genres and all of them highly respected in
their own right. Opening track “Put your guns down” features vocals by Black Uhuru frontman Michael Rose. “Life”, features rising reggae star Jahmai and
the atmospheric and ethereal electro-dub adventures of “Tamino and the temple of dub”, feature one of the godfathers of psychedelic trance music Raja
Ram (from electronic duo Shpongle) on flute. One of the album's stand-out tracks, “I start to pray” is a truly distinguished collaboration between legendary
dub producer and vocalist Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and UK electronic pioneers The Orb, with the inimitable Dennis ‘Dubmaster’ Bovell adding his
characteristically uncompromising bass to the mix - it’s a high risk strategy to put so many virtuoso artists in one song but one that pays off handsomely in
the realization of this deep, elegant and very dubby track!
Other collaborators on the new record include, Hedflux (one of the UK’s hottest breaks producers), dub maestro Twilight Circus, Moroccan artist Tahar
(from the band Momo) & Gaudi’s on-stage partner in rhyme, vocalist and prodigiously talented beatboxer, Danny Ladwa.
In Between Times more than justifies Gaudi’s reputation as a musical frontiersman and “fearless music producer” (Billboard magazine) in it’s complete
disregard for musical boundaries and stylistic separation... It is Gaudi style - the fusion of many genres into one distinct and characteristic sound.
