anthropogenic sources. Variations in upstream discharges cause large temporal fluctuations<br />

(>20 mgl -1 in 1.5 hours, 11/5/01) in <strong>surface</strong> <strong>water</strong> calcium concentrations that mask any<br />

change that may occur due to <strong>ground<strong>water</strong></strong> discharge, either from the Triassic Sandstone<br />

aquifer, or from the Carboniferous strata.<br />

<strong>The</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>water</strong>s discharging from opposite banks <strong>of</strong> the river may differ markedly, as in<br />

the case <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>ile 5 (at 0 km, Figure 7.11a) located in parkland on the Carboniferous-aquifer<br />

boundary. High levels <strong>of</strong> calcium were detected discharging from the northern bank and low<br />

calcium concentrations from the south. <strong>The</strong> high calcium levels were associated with elevated<br />

levels <strong>of</strong> trichloroethene (TCE) that were unexpected in the park land. An industrial site<br />

thought to be the source was located from aerial photographs
