the philosophy_
the
philosophy
The(sydney)magazine and the(melbourne)
magazine celebrate the very best of what
our cities have to offer with energy and
authority. What you need to know but
didn’t know about Sydney or Melbourne.
Surprising and uplifting. Culture, food,
style, sport and business.
Live an enriching life in our cities.
(sydney) to me…
“Is a twilight swim at Nielsen Park...soaking up the majesty of
the State Theatre during the Sydney International Film Festival...
horseriding in Centennial Park....long, lazy lunches on the finger
wharf at Woolloomooloo...the coin-operated BBQs at Bronte Beach.
Sydney is seductive, sporty and stylish. Sydney is home.”
Georgina Safe, Editor, the(sydney)magazine.
(melbourne) to me…
“There are so many Melbournes. Since John Batman traveled up
river and found a ‘place for a village’ in 1835, it has grown into a
metropolis this year ranked the world’s most livable. It’s a place
where those obsessed with sport can also be obsessed with
coffee. It’s a bike city, a foodie town, a music hub, a place where
style and substance matter. Here, we celebrate quality.”
the contributors_
The
contributors
the(sydney)magazine
Guy Griffin
Guy has been writing about food and wine for
twenty years. A longstanding panel member
of The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food
Guide and has appeared on TV a number of
times. He has also quirky food obsessions.
This year it’s a bizarre Spanish crustacean
known as the ‘goose barnacle’.
Penny McCarthy
Fashion director Penny has been styling fashion
shoots for more than 20 years, working for
Mode, Madison and Marie Claire. Recently
returned from Singapore, McCarthy is loving
being back. “I’m a Sydney girl through and
through, showing off my city through the pages
of the(sydney)magazine.”
Victoria Meppem
Victoria started at Vogue in the overaccessorised
1980’s and spent fifteen
years honing her craft as Beauty Director on
magazines including Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue
and InStyle. “Beauty is in my blood, it’s an
addiction. I love the people, the passion, the
brands, the technology. I’m still on the quest for
the perfect red lipstick.”
Terry Durack
Terry is the chief restaurant reviewer for The
Sydney Morning Herald and co-editor of The
Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide. He
has written six books including ‘Yum: A Voyage
Around My Stomach’, ‘Hunger’ and ‘Noodle’.
the contributors_
The
contributors
the(melbourne)magazine
Larissa Dubecki
Joining the magazine team in 2009 as our food critic, Larissa
Dubecki is also the weekly reviewer for The Age and a major
contributor to The Age Good Food Guide. A true gourmet,
Dubecki will try anything once and is happy whether she’s
nitpicking the details in a three-hat fine diner or exploring the
Lebanese pizza bakeries of Sydney Road.
Peter Barrett
The life of a writer for the magazine is about as varied as it gets in
journalism. In his time, Peter Barrett has searched the Yarra for a
platypus (he eventually found one), explored the city’s decaying
mansions, sought out Melbourne’s spookiest places (and rated
them with a spook-o-meter) and taken our readers above the
clocks at Flinders Street Station. He’s also snared interviews with
many of the city’s best-known faces, including William McInnes
and Rachel Griffiths.
Tom Ryan
A film critic known for his discerning taste and good judgement,
Tom Ryan was originally known for his reviews in The Sunday
Age and on ABC 774. Along with our other previewers, Ryan
helps draw readers to The Ticket section of the magazine,
which offer a comprehensive guide to what’s opening in the
coming month.
