ST MARY’ S CHURCH, LYNTON
MAKE MELODY TO THE LORD
A festival of hymns old and new
Jointly with RSCM Somerset
Directed by Andrew Maries
A summer event in a beautiful location. It is intended that the event will be partly social in nature;
and it is hoped that it will attract not only singers from far and wide but also their friends and
relations. For the singers, there will be an afternoon workshop. This will conclude with an act of
worship to which friends and relations are warmly invited.
It is hoped that accompaniment will be provided by both organ
and orchestra. If you would like to be a player in this orchestra,
please let Malcolm Walker know as soon as possible (telephone
01884 860501 or email jmw4admin@gmail.com), specifying
which instrument you will play (flute, clarinet, oboe, violin, viola,
cello, bassoon, recorder, saxophone, cornet, trumpet, guitar etc).
Further details and a booking form will be sent out by Malcolm in
due course.
POSSIBLY ON A SATURDAY IN SEPTEMBER 2013
TRAVELLING EVENSONG
Organization of this event is work in progress at the moment. The idea is that singers meet at a
church and there, for an hour or so, rehearse music for Evensong (Introit, psalm, versicles and
responses, setting of canticles, simple anthem, hymns). Then, we get in a bus and go to a village
church where we sing the introit, versicles and responses and psalm. After that, we travel to another
village church where we hear the first lesson and sing the Magnificat (and possibly an Office Hymn).
Then, we go to another village church .. and so on … ending up at a church where we complete the
service. An important point is that the final stop on the trip is close to a tea room. After tea, we
return to the starting point, where we have left our cars. Malcolm Walker has been on two such trips
in Oxfordshire and says they are most enjoyable. Indeed, RSCM Oxford has organized another such
trip recently. It took place on Bank Holiday Monday, 7 May 2012, and a write-up of it was published
on page 22 of the latest (September 2012) issue of Church Music Quarterly.
Please let Malcolm Walker know if you are interested in going on this trip (telephone 01884 860501
or email jmw4admin@gmail.com). We have not yet decided on a location, but eastern Dartmoor is a
strong possibility. An important practicality is that we need to be able to get a 53-seater bus close to
each church, which rules out some churches on account of the narrowness of lanes and ability to
park the bus.
