Artsy, brainy, funky,
sometimes crazy Townies
by Jeff Nazzaro
The we Interrupters have a group
■ef conversations in Wilmington is
acting debate like artsy-crazy for
_lhe love of wit, word, poetry and
"prose.
If the above sounds a trifle
incoherent, it is. It is also a fair
sampling of the type of
multi-layered conversation held
routinely by The - excuse me, I'm
sorry, no, you go ahead -
Interrupters.
The Interrupters is a
self-described "loose affiliation of
artsy, brainy, funky, and sometimes
crazy Townies and their friends"
who get together to "write, make
art, discuss issues, dine, be
entertained and just
explore/share/enjoy a lifestyle
alternative to today's pop culture."
If the above sounds a little like an
ad in the personal columns, it sort of
is and it also helps explain why The
Interrupters got started in the first
place.
You-know the ads: tall, thin,
practitioners of various fine arts,
ranging from painting to poetry.
As a forum for showcasing their
creative work, they have published
a newsletter, "The Interrupters
News & Review," an eclectic mix of
poetry, prose, commentary and
interviews and a neat way of
avoiding the slush pile of so many
editors of literary magazines.
Magazines with circulations of
poem that is tall, thin, attractive ...
you may get the idea.
The Interrupters was founded by
longtime Silver Lake area resident
Margaret "Maggie" Imbimbo and
her daughters, Betsy Woods and
Diana Miladin and, according to the
"News & Review" "serves as a
vehicle for creative, intellectual and
social expression for like-minded
individuals from, or in some way
connected to the Town of
Wilmington."
"What we hope to do is to
celebrate the intelligence,
creativity, and the idiosyncrasy and
the individuality of this community,
rt-Kit"wa'lks, fragrant meadows', which I just love," Miladin said on a
The issue begins, after a front
page introduction, with a scathing,
pseudonymously written
commentary "Regarding the Matter
of Dorothy Wiberg" in the
screaming headline tradition of
Mark Twain.
From there, a page is given to two
poems by Wilmington resident Dan
Murphy, whose work has been
collected in a volume entitled "The
Fractured Emerald."
Other poetic Interrupters include
Ceres, Michele Pregcnt,
Hinda-Jonathan, Anne Buzzcll,
Daniel Woodbury and Peter
For over 50 years now,
the Jackson Fuel Company
has kept our community
humming. But it hasn't al-
ways been easy.
It's helped a lot to have
a bank right here in the
neigborhood that under-
stands the ebb and flow of
local business needs. And
can respond accordingly.
At Medford Savings we
, offer competitive rates, and
a full range of accounts
geared to businesses in this
specific area. Plus a level of
personalized service out of
Prose work was published in the
"News & Review" by Woods, Larry
Jones, Don Boudrcau and Eileen
Lepore.
The Interrupters expect a bigger
and better successor to volume one
sometime around Thanksgiving and
are currently hard at work
preparing it in Woods' basement -
The Interrupters clubhouse.
To call it anything but a clubhouse
would be unfair. But this cozy
room is lacking the Do Not Enter,
Slop, and Dangerous Curves street
signs and Cyndi Crawford shrine
punctuating your average suburban
hideaway.
This is a literary lair, and is
accommodated accordingly, with
original, hand-crafted art deco
works from Woods that include a
button-disguised fuse box, creative
paint storage and lots of
strategically placed spray paint.
With the people involved - a core
group of between six and 12 - the
setting creates the "playful,
non-structured atmosphere,"
Miladin likes to interact in and
glides rclaxcdly into the "kind of
free-floating salon," Woods calls
The Interrupters.
Interested artists, art enthusiasts,
conversationalists and people who
just like to sit around, smoke
cigarettes, drink coffee and relate
can call The Interrupters clubhouse
