DIRECTIONS TO UNIVERSITY LAKE
From Chapel Hill:
Take Franklin Street west toward Carrboro, in
Carrboro, Franklin turns into Main Street and
then Jones Ferry Road. After passing under
NC54, take a left turn at the second stop light,
at the top of the hill, onto Old Fayetteville
Road. Your first right is the access road to
University Lake.
Tar Heel Tradition: Why Tar Heels?
University of North Carolina athletic teams are known as the Tar Heels
because North Carolina is “the Tar Heel state.”
One legend has the nickname being applied to the state’s residents as
long ago as the Revolutionary War. According to this story, the troops
of British General Cornwallis were fording what is now known as the
Tar River between Rocky Mount and Battleboro when they discovered
that tar had been dumped into the stream to impede their crossing. When
they finally got across the river they found their feet completely black
with tar. Their observation that anyone who waded North Carolina rivers
would acquire tar heels led to the nickname first being used.
Others say the nickname was acquired during the War Between the
States. During one of that war’s fiercest battles a column supporting
North Carolina troops was driven from the field. After the battle, the
North Carolinians who had successfully fought it out alone happened
to meet the regiment which had fled to safety and were greeted with the
Page 4
From Durham or Raleigh:
From Durham or I-40 take NC54 West. Once
in Chapel Hill, you will take the NC54 bypass
(it’s a right-hand on-ramp to make what is effectively
a left onto the bypass). Take the Jones
Ferry Road exit, turn left at the light at the end
of the ramp, after passing under NC54, take a
left turn at the second stop light, at the top of
the hill, onto Old Fayetteville Road. Your first
right is the access road to University Lake.
From the West:
Approaching on I-85/I-40, in Graham take the
exit for NC54. You will follow 54 for approximately
20 miles before approaching Carrboro
-- on your right as you climb the hill into
Carrboro will be a large rock painted blue and
white -- turn right onto Old Fayetteville Road,
it’s the first stoplight you will have encountered
for many miles. After crossing Jones
Ferry Road, your first right is the access road to
University Lake.
question, “Any more tar down in the Old North State,
boys?”
“No, not a bit,” shot back one of the North Carolina
soldiers. “Old Jeff’s bought it all up,” he went on, referring
to Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy.
“Is that so? What’s he going to do with it?”
“He’s going to put it on you’ns heels to make you stick
better in the next fight.”
Upon hearing of the incident, Robert E. Lee smiled and
said to a fellow officer, “God bless the Tar Heel boys.”
A letter found in 1991 by State Archivist David Olson lends credence
to another, more direct theory. A letter from Maj. Joseph Engelhard, dated
Aug. 24, 1864, describes a fight involving men from North Carolina
in which Lee was heard to have said, “There they stand as if they have
tar on their heels.”

CAROLINA COACHING STAFF
Sarah Haney
Head Coach
Sarah Haney, who has played key roles at every
level of the UNC rowing program, is in her 11th season
as the Tar Heels’ head coach. After serving as
an assistant coach during the 2001-02 season, when
she directed the Carolina novice squad, Haney was
promoted to the program’s top position on July 19,
2002.
“When I joined the UNC club rowing team in
1995, I could never have guessed that seven years
later I’d be coaching the varsity program,” Haney
said. “The reason I wanted this job is to provide students
with the opportunity I had at Carolina.”
Haney, a 1998 graduate of UNC, helped lobby for the rowing program’s elevation
to varsity status at North Carolina and lettered on the school’s first varsity
squad in 1997-98. She served as a volunteer assistant coach at UNC in the fall of
1998 while completing her undergraduate degree. Upon graduating with a double
major in English and exercise and sports science, she joined the Carolina staff on a
full-time basis for the spring of 1999.
She then spent two years at the University of Wisconsin as assistant coach of the
lightweight women’s team. Her novices won the Eastern Sprints championship in
2000 and finished second in 2001. Haney returned to UNC as an assistant coach in
July of 2001 and directed the team’s novice rowers that year.
A native of Southern Pines, N.C., Haney is a graduate of Pinecrest High School,
where she captained the volleyball, basketball and softball teams and played on a
state championship volleyball team. She began rowing as a North Carolina sophomore
and captained the UNC club team in 1996 and 1997.
Brie Tyler
Assistant Coach
Brie Tyler joined the North Carolina rowing program
as an assistant coach in the summer of 2008.
She is involved with all aspects of the varsity squad,
working with head coach Sarah Haney.
Among Tyler’s specific duties are overseeing the
team’s coxswains, coaching rowing technique, organizing
practice sessions and coordinating the recruitment
of high school student-athletes.
Tyler came to UNC from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie,
N.Y., where she spent the 2007-08 season as
an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s rowing teams. She also has served
as Director of Junior Rowing for the Greenwich (Conn.) Water Club, where she
managed all aspects of a program that served more than 100 athletes. She gained
additional coaching experience at the Craftsbury (Vt.) Sculling Center and at Wesleyan
University, among other programs.
Tyler is a 2003 graduate of Bryn Mawr, where she was a coxswain and co-captain
of the rowing team.
CAROLINA ROWING
Chelsea Pemberton
Novice Coach
Chelsea Pemberton joined the North Carolina
rowing staff in the fall of 2012 and serves as head
coach of the novice program.
Before coming to UNC, Pemberton spent a year at
Bucknell, where she managed all aspects of recruiting
and coached the novice program. Prior to joining
the Bison staff, she spent two years at Alabama in a
similar role. She also has coached masters-level rowers
in Boston since 2007 and coached at the Smoky
Mountain Rowing Center in Maryville, Tenn., in
2008-09.
A former member of the U.S. Junior National Team, Pemberton was a three-time
All-America at the University of Tennessee and the school’s Rowing Athlete of the
Year in 2004.
Patti Hucks
Volunteer Assistant Coach
Patti Hucks is in her fifth year as a volunteer assistant
coach working with the Carolina team. She
assists associate head coach Stephen Frazier Wong
in coaching the novice team.
Hucks has been rowing for more than a decade and
leads the local masters program, with which she continues
to train and race. The club named an eight the
“Fast Patti” in her honor.
A New Jersey native, Hucks earned a degree in
psychology from Rider College and has done work
toward a Ph.D. in counselling at UNC.
She and her husband, Tim, have three grown children: Ben, Randy and Megan.
They are enthusiastic fans of UNC athletics, especially the men’s basketball team.
