Bryan Oros Mr. Larry A. Redfoot Fall Update By Ron Duez, Administrator It’s hard to believe that we’re facing the end of another year. As I look back over 2012 I am thankful for so much. My staff continues to do an amazing job in meeting and exceeding the needs and desires of our residents and family members; our senior living residence has been at capacity for several years; and our facilities and grounds continue to improve in beauty and efficiency. This year we completed a two-year courtyard enhancement project that now provides beautiful outdoor spaces for residents and guests to enjoy, we have installed a new sign on Elston Way; and we have installed Wi-Fi for our residents and visitors convenience. As we look to the Christmas season we are excited for our Family Christmas Tea. This has become a tradition here at The Ridgewood for residents and staff to celebrate Christmas and the New Year with their families. This is one of several traditions we have established here including our annual Family Day and our Strawberry Festival, both held in the summer. Traditions continue to be an important part of life and I am happy to know that our traditions enhance the quality of living for our residents. In support of traditions we have established a new initiative for Christmas – our first Annual Christmas Appeal campaign. This campaign gives opportunities for family members and friends of The Ridgewood at Shenango Valley to give a gift of money used to ensure that all residents receive a Christmas gift and to support the purchase of items that enhance residents’ lives. The tradition of giving and receiving gifts is deeply rooted in the Christmas season – a tradition that everyone should enjoy! I appreciate your consideration for support of this campaign. During 2013 our efforts continue as we look to evaluate technology that enhances our delivery and documentation of services. Christmas Appeal Established To many people, Christmas is a time to create lasting memories and traditions. For Marian Cornwall and Robert Shaw, both residents of The Ridgewood at Shenango Valley, it is more time to spend with their family and friends. However, not too long ago they both were in despair. Marian was mourning the loss of her husband of 60 years, Norman, while Robert was given a prognosis of six months to live. “I was born and raised in Chicago and lived most of my adult life there,” Marian said. “I loved it. When he died, I felt lost. I visited with my daughters and with my son, Rick. I knew that I had to make a decision. Rick suggested The Ridgewood at Shenango Valley. I laughed and said, ‘This isn’t for me.’ I used to pray to the Lord to please take me. After I was here for two weeks, I said, ‘Lord, I changed my mind.’ I’ve met so many wonderful friends, and I feel very much at home. I like it here, and I think the people are wonderful.” “I was in a rehab facility in Arizona and given about six months to live,” said Robert, who has made his home at The Ridgewood at Shenango Valley for nearly six years. “I’m healthier now and life is better here. Some people go into a place and can have nothing but grief. Or you can go into a place and enjoy it. There is nothing I need to make me happy. I get wonderful care.” Marian and Robert have a unique link to each other: Marian’s son, Rick Cornwall, and Robert’s daughter, Nancie, are married and live in Hermitage. The couple credits the care given at The Ridgewood at Shenango Valley with providing a better quality of life for their parents, and this has allowed them to celebrate many holidays together over the years! “By the grace of God, I selected this facility,” Nancie said. “When you are looking, you don’t know if it is the right or wrong facility. God was really looking out for us. My dad moved from rehab to here directly.” Rick said that he thinks his mother’s visiting The Ridgewood at Shenango Valley for the annual Christmas Tea and having Robert live there first helped her with the transition of moving in herself. Robert and Marian both enjoy being near each other, but laugh at how they keep tabs on one another and maybe even “snitch” from time to time! Nancie and Rick regularly bring Marian and Robert and oftentimes other residents they’ve grown close with to their home for holidays and special occasions. Dot Goodrick, one Pictured are: Rick & Nancie Cornwall (children), Marian Cornwall (Rick’s mother - seated), Dot Goodrick (friend), and Robert Shaw (Nancie’s father - seated) of these residents, often enjoys visits to Cornwall’s home. “Proper care and a lot of love make a big difference in their lives,” Nancie said. “At Christmastime and all year round at The Ridgewood at Shenango Valley, all our residents are part of our family and we want to make each person feel special and loved. With your generosity to the First Annual Resident Christmas Appeal, we are able to make certain that the tradition of receiving a gift remains. For some residents, this may be the only gift they receive. We are very excited for our first Resident Christmas Appeal,” said Administrator Ron Duez. “Any funds received beyond the cost of gifts for residents will be put toward the resident wish list for items that residents would like to have.” Thank you for your support and may you have a blessed Christmas and happy, healthy New Year! 3
