Self-Help Books for Kids...and the Adults in Their Lives
The Story of Magination Press
Magination Press publishes beautifully written and accessible picture books,
middle school readers, teen guides, and workbooks to help children deal with a
wide variety of psychological concerns and challenges, from common issues—
bullying, shyness, and self-esteem—to special circumstances—blended families,
grave illnesses, and learning disabilities. Our books are designed to lead children
and their caregivers through an instructive process in which these issues are
confronted, understood, and dealt with in concrete ways.
Written by psychologists and experts who work with children on a daily basis,
these well-crafted books provide a form of “bibliotherapy’’ for kids and the adults
in their lives, and many include the popular “Note to Parents” explaining issues
in context and offering practical parenting tips. In 2012, Magination Press
celebrates 15 years as an imprint of the American Psychological Association,
the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in
the United States and the largest association of psychologists worldwide.
Emotions!
Making Sense of Your Feelings
Mary Lamia, PhD
Emotions affect motivation, self-awareness, social relationships, decision-making, self-control, and your ability to
achieve goals. Yet many young adults have little understanding about how emotions actually manifest in daily life.
In this book, clinical psychologist Mary Lamia breaks down individual emotions such as shame, anger, hope, and
happiness, and shows teens where each emotion originates, how it makes you feel physically and mentally, and what
you can do about it if it feels too big or out of control. This is an invaluable book for any teen struggling with strong
emotions or anyone who wants to understand more about themselves and their emotion-fueled life.
Eli’s Lie-O-Meter
A Story About Telling the Truth
Sandra Levins
Illustrated by Jeff Ebbeler
“Eli's Lie-O-Meter: A Story About Telling the Truth is a
humorous children’s book about what can result from
stretching the truth to unrecognizable limits. Wonderful, wild, fantastical illustrations
reveal the great capacities of the Lie-O-Meter to help bring Eli’s dilemmas
about appropriate truth-telling into focus. Eli is a great hero for kids to identify
with in this self-explanatory tale, and humor is nearly always one of the best teachers.
An additional note to parents at the end of Eli’s Lie-O-Meter by Maria Lamia,
clinical psychologist, helps explain how children perceive distinctions between
telling truths and untruths, and reinforces the idea that parents are role models in
truth-telling, and it is more effective to ‘stress the importance of being honest
rather than focus on the child’s dishonesty.’” —The Midwest Book Review
Jeanie Franz Ransom
Illustrated by Jackie Urbanovic
In this highly entertaining story for young children, kids
will learn when “squealing” on your fellow classmate is
appropriate and when it is merely tattling! Set in a school classroom, the “kids” in
the class—really, feisty piglets—constantly tattle on each other, creating an air of
frustration and distrust. As the story unfolds, the teacher, rather than strictly
policing the situation, addresses underlying feelings and encourages mutual
problem solving.
Why Are You So Scared?
A Child's Book About Parents With PTSD
Beth Andrews, LCSW
Illustrated by Katherine Kirkland
“An empathetic and honest text introduces scenarios that
might trigger PTSD, such as assault, car or plane accident,
military service, police or fire service, natural disasters and
war-related or terrorist bombings. Explanations as to how
someone with PTSD might react follow, with examples including
panic attacks, nervous or jumpy behavior, sleep issues or nightmares. The
text acknowledges children's feelings of helplessness as well as the false sense that
their behavior might be responsible, providing strong reassurance that that is not
the case, and it also emphasizes that feelings of sadness, anger and despair do not
cancel the love of a parent.” —Kirkus
Therapy for Children and Families
A psychologist can help parents and children meet the challenges and stresses they face every day by working to create strategies
that build resilience. Talking to a psychologist or therapist can also help families and children deal with difficult, confusing,
or troubling emotions. Getting children the extra emotional help they need can improve their behavior, attentiveness, and
overall wellbeing. There is also a wealth of great books that can help explain the process of therapy to children and parents,
rendering the prospect a little more familiar and less daunting.
Health and Medical Issues
Illnesses or medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and allergies affect a child’s physical and social functioning, and
may lead to feelings of frustration, isolation, and inadequacy. It is important for parents and other caregivers to address these
emotions honestly and with empathy, while at the same time providing a sense of safety, maintaining a positive attitude, and
suggesting practical ways to think about and deal with physical constraints. Books about other children with related or similar
illnesses can be a tremendous help in acclimating a child to their own conditions and demonstrating the positive, healthy
outcomes that result from accepting an illness or other medical issue.
Max Archer, Kid Detective
The Case of the Wet Bed
Howard J. Bennett, MD
Illustrated by Spike Gerrell
“The book puts [bedwetting] in context: ‘five million kids
in the United States…go to bed…not knowing if they will
wake up wet or dry.’ What follows is a clear plan ably complemented
by Gerrell’s superb cartoon illustrations of Max and Billy on the case as
they investigate the digestive system, how a bladder works and ways to better signal
the brain to get up and go. At the back of the book there is extra information
about pooping and its impact on bedwetting, a word search about proper foods to
eat and a ‘Q&A About Bedwetting (Just for Parents!).’ Even if there were not an
alarming dearth of titles on this subject aimed at kids, this would stand out as a
most thorough, highly readable resource.” —Kirkus
The Flyaway Blanket
Allan Peterkin, MD
Illustrated by Emmeline Pidgen
“Pidgen’s cheerful artwork is reassuring, with a bright palette,
loose, sweeping lines, and plenty of attention on mother-child
tenderness, human and animal alike. The message about
attachment, security, and sometimes letting go is conveyed
subtly and organically.” —Publishers Weekly
While a mother and son are out hanging laundry, the child’s favorite blanket is
picked up by the wind and flies away. Beautiful illustrations show the blanket on
its journey through the neighborhood as it visits many different animal mothers
and babies, eventually returning to its original owner to be cherished and loved.
Health and Medical Issues
Family Matters
Parents who want to make the transitions involved in divorce and remarriage smooth and manageable for their children
need to provide stability and structure while remaining attentive to behavioral changes and emotional needs throughout the
family. Discussing the roles step-parents will play in raising their new spouse’s children, as well as establishing changes in
household rules, provide children with a clear understanding of the new terrain. Parents can also benefit from reading books
and stories to their children that reflect and deal with children going through similar situations. Such bibliotherapy enables a
child to contact difficult emotions safely and work through them imaginatively.
