“AD 293. The Vallala converts to Christianity <strong>in</strong> Kaveri<br />

poopattanam (the famous Puhar at the mouth of the<br />

Northern baranch of the river Cauvery) were persecuted by<br />

their K<strong>in</strong>g. So 72 families embarked on a ship and came to<br />

Korakkeni (Kollam, Quilon), where there were Christians at<br />

The <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g follow up is that the palm-leaf conta<strong>in</strong>s the follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

entry also:<br />

“AD 315 A certa<strong>in</strong> sorcerer called Manikka Vachakar came<br />

(to Quilonn) and converted back to <strong>H<strong>in</strong>duism</strong> 116 persons<br />

belong<strong>in</strong>g to 8 of the 72 families from Puhar.”<br />

church ) also quotes the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

‘In the third centuary a certa<strong>in</strong> sorcerer called by them,<br />

Manikka Vachagar, arrived <strong>in</strong> the Chola country (on the<br />

East Cost of <strong>India</strong>), and hav<strong>in</strong>g deceived and perverted<br />

many Christians by his wiles and sown seeds of heresy<br />

among them found his way round by land to the Malayalam<br />

country. At that time there were many Christians settled <strong>in</strong><br />

the southern part of Travancore, between Wuilon and<br />

Kottar; and <strong>in</strong> this district he labored, and by his pretended<br />

miracles obta<strong>in</strong>ed much the same <strong>in</strong>fluence over them as<br />

Simon Magnus did over the people of Samaria. If anyone<br />

was taken ill with serious illness or there was disease<br />

among their cattle, the sorcerer was sent for to breathe over<br />

them and mutter his charms and apply his sacred ashes. He
