THE CHAPEL
The Chapel provides a sacred space at the heart of the College for all members of Selwyn College and
Newnham College to use as a place of prayer and reflection. Unless a service is taking place, silence is
kept in the Chapel between 12:00noon and 1:00pm each day during Full Term. In addition to Sunday
services, daily prayers are offered morning and evening on weekdays, and requests for prayer can be
made known to the Dean of Chapel, or written in the intercessions book in the ante-chapel.
The Dean of Chapel and Chaplain, Hugh Shilson-Thomas, is a priest in the Church of England. He is
available to all members of College in confidence to lend a listening ear, provide support and engage with
those exploring their spiritual lives. He can also put members of faiths other than Christianity in touch
with their own faith communities. The Assistant Chaplain, Brett Gray, has special responsibility as
Chaplain at Newnham and is Assistant Chaplain at Selwyn.
The Gosden and Frost Scholars are graduate students training for ordained ministry in the Church of
England who undertake various duties in the Chapel. Others, detailed below, are among those who
support the ministry of the Chapel in a variety of ways.

Holy Communion is said on the Sundays immediately before and after Full Term.
Worship at 8.30am is in the Upper Chapel, which at other times is reserved for quiet prayer (open to all,
entry through the vestry and follow signs). All other services take place in the main Chapel.

THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY is kept from 18-25 January. There will be a
special service of prayer to mark this at 9:00pm on Friday 27 January, followed by refreshments.
CHORAL COMPLINE by candlelight will be sung by the Choir on 1 Feb and 14 March at 10:00pm.
A CHORAL EUCHARIST FOR CANDLEMAS (The Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the
Temple) will be celebrated at 6:00pm on Sunday 29 January.
The ASH WEDNESDAY Choral Communion Service (with the Imposition of Ashes) takes place on
Wednesday 22 Feb at 9:00pm. You are encouraged to come to mark the beginning of the season of Lent.
The Chapel Choir will sing Choral Evensong in PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL on Saturday 11
February at 3:30pm. Any members of College, Alumni or Friends of Selwyn College Chapel Choir who
wish to come to this service will be especially welcome. The Choir will leave Selwyn by coach at
12.30pm – please tell the Chapel Administrator if you are interested in joining them.
The BISHOP OF ELY will preach on 4 March. He will be meeting members of the College beforehand
for a question and answer session – if you would like to be invited, please email the Chapel Administrator.
A CATHOLIC MASS will be celebrated in the Chapel during the term. Details from Siobhan (sc638).

MUSIC AND READINGS FOR PASSIONTIDE
LENT GROUP 2012: APPROACHING MYSTERY (from 6 Feb)
A short course looking at the shape and meaning of the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Six Mondays, 5.30-7.00pm,
including a shared meal, no cost. All welcome - ideal for those who want to deepen their knowledge of church

CHAPEL SUPPERS – BRING YOUR FRIENDS!
Chapel Suppers in the New SCR are a very popular and sociable way of eating on Sunday evenings! Supper
follows drinks after the service, and all Chapel-goers are welcome – simply sign up on the list at the back of the
Chapel by Wednesday lunchtime or email chapel-administrator@sel.cam.ac.uk. Ends in time for SCMS concerts.
MONDAY MUNCH (BIBLE STUDY)
An informal group looking at biblical passages relating to the theme God’s Activity in the World. More details from

ANNUAL CHAPEL RETREAT
The Chapel Retreat (heavily subsidised for students) takes place at Launde Abbey in Leicestershire from Friday 20

FILM NIGHTS, CHAPEL SOCIALS AND TIME OUT
A number of activities are on offer this term to help with rest and recreation amidst work and study. All who come
to Chapel are welcome whenever people gather in D7 or elsewhere after chapel services. Other Chapel socials will
be advertised during the term – and Film Nights are planned for 15 February and 7 March at 7.00pm in D7.
CONFIRMATION CLASSES
This term the Chaplain is offering sessions to prepare people for Confirmation, who wish to be confirmed at the
University Confirmation service on Sunday 6 May at 10.30am. Please contact Hugh (hds21) at the beginning of
term if you are interested.
