THE CHAPEL<br />

The <strong>Chapel</strong> provides a sacred space at the heart of the <strong>College</strong> for all members of <strong>Selwyn</strong> <strong>College</strong> and<br />

Newnham <strong>College</strong> to use <strong>as</strong> a place of prayer and reflection. Unless a service is taking place, silence is<br />

kept in the <strong>Chapel</strong> between 12:00noon and 1:00pm each day during Full <strong>Term</strong>. In addition to Sunday<br />

services, daily prayers are offered morning and evening on weekdays, and requests for prayer can be<br />

made known to the Dean of <strong>Chapel</strong>, or written in the intercessions book in the ante-chapel.<br />

The Dean of <strong>Chapel</strong> and Chaplain, Hugh Shilson-Thom<strong>as</strong>, is a priest in the Church of England. He is<br />

available to all members of <strong>College</strong> in confidence to lend a listening ear, provide support and engage with<br />

those exploring their spiritual lives. He can also put members of faiths other than Christianity in touch<br />

with their own faith communities. The Assistant Chaplain, Brett Gray, h<strong>as</strong> special responsibility <strong>as</strong><br />

Chaplain at Newnham and is Assistant Chaplain at <strong>Selwyn</strong>.<br />

The Gosden and Frost Scholars are graduate students training for ordained ministry in the Church of<br />

England who undertake various duties in the <strong>Chapel</strong>. Others, detailed below, are among those who<br />

support the ministry of the <strong>Chapel</strong> in a variety of ways.<br />

THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY is kept from 18-25 January. There will be a<br />

special service of prayer to mark this at 9:00pm on Friday 27 January, followed by refreshments.<br />

CHORAL COMPLINE by candlelight will be sung by the Choir on 1 Feb and 14 March at 10:00pm.<br />

A CHORAL EUCHARIST FOR CANDLEMAS (The Fe<strong>as</strong>t of the Pre<strong>sent</strong>ation of Christ in the<br />

Temple) will be celebrated at 6:00pm on Sunday 29 January.<br />

The ASH WEDNESDAY Choral Communion Service (with the Imposition of Ashes) takes place on<br />

Wednesday 22 Feb at 9:00pm. You are encouraged to come to mark the beginning of the se<strong>as</strong>on of <strong>Lent</strong>.<br />

The <strong>Chapel</strong> Choir will sing Choral Evensong in PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL on Saturday 11<br />

February at 3:30pm. Any members of <strong>College</strong>, Alumni or Friends of <strong>Selwyn</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>Chapel</strong> Choir who<br />

wish to come to this service will be especially welcome. The Choir will leave <strong>Selwyn</strong> by coach at<br />

12.30pm – ple<strong>as</strong>e tell the <strong>Chapel</strong> Administrator if you are interested in joining them.<br />

The BISHOP OF ELY will preach on 4 March. He will be meeting members of the <strong>College</strong> beforehand<br />

for a question and answer session – if you would like to be invited, ple<strong>as</strong>e email the <strong>Chapel</strong> Administrator.<br />

LENT GROUP <strong>2012</strong>: APPROACHING MYSTERY (from 6 Feb)<br />

A short course looking at the shape and meaning of the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Six Mondays, 5.30-7.00pm,<br />

including a shared meal, no cost. All welcome - ideal for those who want to deepen their knowledge of church<br />

CHAPEL SUPPERS – BRING YOUR FRIENDS!<br />

<strong>Chapel</strong> Suppers in the New SCR are a very popular and sociable way of eating on Sunday evenings! Supper<br />

follows drinks after the service, and all <strong>Chapel</strong>-goers are welcome – simply sign up on the list at the back of the<br />

ANNUAL CHAPEL RETREAT<br />

The <strong>Chapel</strong> Retreat (heavily subsidised for students) takes place at Launde Abbey in Leicestershire from Friday 20<br />

FILM NIGHTS, CHAPEL SOCIALS AND TIME OUT<br />

A number of activities are on offer this term to help with rest and recreation amidst work and study. All who come<br />

to <strong>Chapel</strong> are welcome whenever people gather in D7 or elsewhere after chapel services. Other <strong>Chapel</strong> socials will<br />

be advertised during the term – and Film Nights are planned for 15 February and 7 March at 7.00pm in D7.<br />

CONFIRMATION CLASSES<br />

This term the Chaplain is offering sessions to prepare people for Confirmation, who wish to be confirmed at the<br />

University Confirmation service on Sunday 6 May at 10.30am. Ple<strong>as</strong>e contact Hugh (hds21) at the beginning of<br />

term if you are interested.<br />
