Toshiba Classic Welcome
It is my pleasure to welcome the 18th annual Toshiba Classic to the Newport Beach Country Club. What a distinct
honor to host this prestigious tournament. Since 1996, The Newport Beach Country Club has been one of the most
desirable destinations on the PGA Champions Tour so it comes as no surprise that the Toshiba Classic has become the
number one charitable contributor on the PGA Champions Tour.
To date, the Tournament has raised $14 million for the Hoag Hospital Foundation. This year the goal is to raise over
one million dollars to bring the total to 15 million dollars in contributions. This is truly a remarkable feat when you take
into consideration that in the 29 year history of the PGA Champions Tour only 10 out of more than 750 tournaments have
raised one million dollars in net proceeds from an event in a single year. One of the most important factors for this success
is the quality of the field and this year is no exception as we are expecting all 30 of the top 30 money winners from 2011.
Some of the notables will be 2010 Champion Freddie “Boom Boom” Couples, 2009 Champion Eduardo Romero, 2009 &
2010 player of the year and Charles Schwab Cup winner Bernard Langer and Tom Watson. We are also pleased to welcome
back 2011 Toshiba Classic Champion Nick Price and Charles Schwab Cup Winner, Tom Lehman.
The 2012 tournament’s purse will be $1.7 million with the winner’s portion being $255,000. We are pleased to have you join us for this wonderful
week and honored to have tremendous community support for the tournament. The thousands of volunteers, sponsors, spectators and players make this
tournament a rich Orange County tradition.
On behalf of everyone at The Newport Beach Country Club, we are extremely proud to once again partner with the Hoag Hospital Foundation,
Toshiba Digital Products Division and the many other outstanding sponsoring companies in our community. We appreciate your support and look forward
to making this the most successful and enjoyable Toshiba Classic ever held at the Newport Beach Country Club.
Hope to see you all at the tournament!
Your Guide to the 2012 Toshiba Classic
When it comes to entertainment in Southern California, the problem of too many choices and not enough time is always difficult. Here’s the good news:
the Toshiba Classic is a week-long event in March that showcases golf legends in the spectacular setting of The Newport Beach Country Club. In fact, the
Toshiba Classic has become so popular that more than 80,000 fans visit the tournament annually, making this the largest and most exciting sporting event
in Orange County every year.
With non-stop action, a lively atmosphere, first-class seats and affordable ticket prices, the Toshiba Classic is a great entertainment option for a group
of friends, corporate partners, and families.
Before you make the trip to Newport Beach, here are a few key details you will need to know in order to maximize your tournament experience this year.
BUYING TICKETS
One of the hallmarks of the Toshiba Classic is its great value. Few other
sporting events can compare to the tournament’s front-row views and
intimate player settings. The $20 advanced-purchase price for any one-day
ticket allows you to walk the course virtually next to the golfers. The Toshiba
Classic can serve as a great excuse to play hooky from work or make for a
great weekend.
Tickets are available from three different outlets: 1) visit the tournament’s
website, www.ToshibaClassic.com, 2) call the tournament office at 949/660-
1001; 3) buy a ticket at the tournament gates on the day you want to attend,
(tickets purchased at the gate are $25) or 4) visit select Orange County
Roger Dunn Golf Shops. (Santa Ana, Mission Viejo and Seal Beach locations)
Weeklong patron badges, providing admission to the grounds and
clubhouse all seven days of tournament week, are only $100. (The
Clubhouse will be closed to all badge holders on Monday, Wednesday and
Thursday of Tournament Week).
Daily Tickets with Clubhouse Access gives you access to the grounds and
Clubhouse on one day of choosing. Available Friday, Saturday or Sunday and
is only $40!
10 • MARCH 2012
WHERE TO WATCH
There are several free public grandstands located throughout the course
including the first tee and 8th, 9th, and 16th greens. With the addition of the
strategically located 18th Green Public Pavilion presented by Zaya Rum
(open to the public with preferred seating), the 18th is without a doubt,
the place to be come Sunday. As you nibble on appetizers and sip cocktails,
come watch the pros as they finish up their rounds, while taking in the
pristine views of the tournament’s always thrilling finale.
Another exciting spot is the grandstand behind the driving range
(right next to the first tee), where you can watch the pros tune up for
their rounds.
TUNING IN TO THE TOSHIBA CLASSIC
If you can’t make it out to the course, you can catch the Toshiba Classic on
the Golf Channel, Friday through Sunday. Friday 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., Saturday
& Sunday 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. (TV times subject to change)
NBCC Professional Paul Hahn
Welcome to the 18th annual Toshiba Classic here at the Newport Beach Country Club. Twelve months ago we were
crowning a new Champion and since that day we have been very busy with member and guest activities.
The Toshiba Classic is a very prestigious event every year yet we have annual events for our members and guests that
are just as important. Just this past year we crowned new men’s and ladies’ Club Champions, Regatta Champions, and
Seahorse Champions to name a few. We also hosted twenty plus outside charity events allowing thousands of dollars to
be channeled to various needy organizations in our community.
As the first of the year arrives we start to focus our energy on the upcoming Toshiba Classic. As far as the golf course
is concerned we are very blessed with a favorable climate and grasses that like to perk up just as the tournament
preparations start. At the same time, the golf shop gears up for the retail sales which will feature a new look in both men’s
and ladies merchandise as well as souvenir pieces. Many patrons who come through the gates to watch their favorite
Champions Tour player, like to leave with something to remember the day. No doubt much of the merchandise sold will go home with at least one player’s
signature if not more.
My staff will be ready to kick into high gear on Monday of tournament week with the first of three Pro-Am days. Preparation of carts, scoreboards,
scorecards and driving range are done tirelessly to make sure all goes well. The Classic Pro-Am Wednesday and Thursday takes a lot of energy and focus
to make the contestants feel special playing alongside the Legends of the game.
When Friday rolls around with the first round of the Tournament everyone tends to relax and enjoy the tournament. We can finally concentrate on
serving the patrons and rubbing elbows with the Tour Players. We all have our favorites every year and there is always a story of some sort to enhance the
event.
I would like to encourage everyone to come out this year to enjoy the finest event on the Champions Tour. This is a good time to see your favorite
players from years past and be able to be up close and personal with them. The driving range is a great place to start so you can see all the different swings
which make up this wonderful Tour.
Hope to see you all out walking the fairways with these true “Legends” of the game.
TOSHIBA 2012 SPECIAL EVENTS
BREAKFAST WITH A CHAMPION PRESENTED BY THE ALLERGAN FOUNDATION
World Golf Hall of Fame member and two- time Toshiba Classic champion Hale Irwin will be this year’s featured guest
at the Breakfast with a Champion, presented by The Allergan Foundation on Tuesday, March 13.
“Fostering the growth of Orange County’s community is something The Allergan Foundation is quite proud to be
associated with, and we value the relationships we’ve built with Hoag Hospital Foundation and Toshiba to make this Breakfast
of Champions happen,” said Jim Hindman, president of The Allergan Foundation.
Irwin, 66, was one of the world’s leading PGA Tour players in the 1970s and 80s, one of only a handful of players to
win three U.S. Opens (1974, 1979 and 1990). Following a PGA TOUR career in which he won 20 events and participated on
five Ryder Cup teams, Irwin joined the Champions Tour in 1995 and saw even greater success in the second phase of his life.
Irwin has amassed 45 wins on the Tour, including the 1998 and 2000 U.S. Senior Opens, three PGA Seniors’ Championships,
and the 1998 and 2002 Toshiba Classic. He is also the all-time leading money winner on the Champions Tour. Irwin was
inducted into the 2002 class of the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Tickets to the breakfast can be purchased by calling (949) 660-1001.
TOSHIBA CLASSIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Over the past 18 years as title sponsor of the Toshiba Classic, Toshiba America Inc. has proudly lead the way to raise
$1 million annually for Hoag and other Orange County charities. The Toshiba Classic has become the charity leader on
the PGA Champions Tour. Toshiba continues its tradition of recognizing some of Orange County’s best and brightest
students with the Toshiba Classic Scholarship Fund.
The scholarship fund is a joint effort of the title sponsor, Toshiba America Information Systems, Digital Products
Division and the tournament. The Toshiba Classic scholarship panel interview 24 high school seniors, nominated by their
BBC RECREATION
This has been an amazing winter. I can’t tell you how many times in the
past few months I have heard an exchange in conversation between our
members, stating how fantastic the weather is here in Newport Beach and
how grateful they are to be here! Belonging to The BBC is the icing on the
cake. Where else can you lie by the pool looking out over a glassy bay with
gorgeous yachts, friendly staff, and a signature cocktail at your disposal? A
more hands on way to enjoy the scenery which surrounds us, is by boat. Tr y
one of the Paddle boards we have for rent! They are very stable, hard to tip
over, and you can turn it into a great workout if that’s what you’re looking for.
A more laid back way to enjoy the water (where you can include up to 11
others!) is via the Duffy boat. Call room service and they will bring your
order straight to the boat,
then off you go! Once
you are on the water, you
will think to yourself,
“Why did I wait so long
to do this?” Call ext 4772
to make a reservation or
just pop in, we can
accommodate!
Hole 1 Par 4 – 339 yards DR: 15
This dogleg-left opening hole is the easiest par-4 on
the course. The key is to take the right club off the
tee, aim inside the fairway bunker on the right and
leave about 100 yards to the hole. You don’t want to
be too close to the green, especially if the pin is up
front.
Hole 2 Par 4 – 390 yards DR: 12
The fairway slopes right to left, so you want to keep
the drive to the right-center of the fairway. The
bunker on the left side of the fairway is trouble. The
uphill second shot is relatively easy unless the pin
is tucked behind the greenside bunker.
Hole 3 Par 5 – 549 yards DR: 16
The third hole, while the longest on the course,
plays significantly shorter, as it is downhill and
usually rides the wind. Look for most players to
reach in two. The double palm on the left hand side
is the go point. Guys who make it past there can hit
the green in two, but getting home isn’t easy
because of the lake on the left and bunkers on the
right. Three is also a difficult putting green because
it slopes pretty dramatically.
Hole 4 Par 3 – 143 yards DR: 9
The fourth hole was significantly redesigned (along
with the third and fifth) prior to the 1998 Toshiba
Senior Classic. This hole is pretty straightforward,
so most pros don’t have much trouble getting it
close. Depending upon the weather, they’ll probably
hit 8- or 9-irons. The green is difficult because it has
big undulations.
Hole 5 Par 4 – 430 yards DR: 3
The fifth marks the beginning of a brutal stretch of
five straight holes that are among the seven most
difficult on the course. The drive on this hole is
challenging because the fairway is uphill so there’s
no landmark to aim for – you can barely see the
crest of the fairway. On the approach, players hit
mid-irons to the green now, so it’s not as difficult as
it used to be. With the mounds behind the green,
there’s also more definition and background.
Newport Beach Country Club
Hole 6 Par 4 – 418 yards DR: 4
The important thing is to drive it far enough and
straight enough so that you have 150 yards to the
hole. From the fairway, the green looks like it runs
off in all directions and doesn’t accept an approach
shot. The sixth is also one of the more subtlebreaking
greens.
Hole 7 Par 4 – 368 yards DR: 8
The seventh green is the trickiest on the course –
players want to stay below the hole. There are two
things you have to do on this hole. The first is to hit
the right club off the tee so that you’re in the middle
of the fairway, 150 yards out. The second is to make
sure you get the ball on the correct side of the hole.
There isn’t a single flat spot on the entire green.
Hole 8 Par 3 – 203 yards DR: 2
The most difficult hole on the golf course. From the
tee it looks impossible to safely land the ball on the
green because it slopes so hard from left to right.
For right-to-left players, it’s tough to hit against the
perspective of the green. Getting the right yardage
is key – most players will hit about a 3-iron.
Hole 9 Par 4 – 407 yards DR: 5
You have to keep the ball in the fairway here. The
approach always plays longer than it appears, so
you either need to hit harder or take an extra club.
It’s also hard to stop the ball on the green because
you can’t see the elevated putting surface from the
fairway.
Hole 10 Par 4 – 429 yards DR: 6
The area to the right of the fairway is out of bounds
for members, but not for the Champions Tour
players. There isn’t much trouble on this hole if you
can keep the ball in the fairway. The pros will hit it
well past the fairway bunkers and get lots of roll.
The green is fairly level and not too difficult to
navigate from the fairway.
Hole 11 Par 4 – 344 yards DR: 13
The best play is to take a 3-wood off the tee and
play to about 100 yards out from the green. If the
pin is back in the right hand corner, you have to
knock your approach over the bunker. This is the
smallest green on the course and if you miss it,
chipping is difficult.
Hole 12 Par 4 – 373 yards DR: 14
Gary McCord birdied the 12th hole all three days en
route to his victory at the 1999 Toshiba Senior
Classic. It is imperative to drive it down the left-hand
side of the fairway. If you flare it to the right, you
have to contend with the rough and you have to lift
the ball straight up in the air to get over the large
eucalyptus tree that guards the green.
Hole 13 Par 3 – 170 yards DR: 6
Sammy Rachels made the only hole-in-one in
tournament history on the 13th in 2002. The
tendency is to bail out to the right on this hole. Plus,
the wind is usually working left to right, so it’s easy
to miss right. The putting surface has a lot of slope,
so the best play is to the fat of the green.
Hole 14 Par 4 – 397 yards DR: 11
This is one of the more difficult driving holes
because the fairway falls away from you. The key is
to aim just left of the two big palms at the corner of
the fairway where you’ll have a relatively flat lie.
From there it’s 150 yards out, but it plays shorter
because the green is set well below the fairway.
Hole 15 Par 5 – 492 yards DR: 18
The easiest hole on the course. The tee shot travels
much further if you take it down the left side. Most
of the players can get there in two unless they hit a
poor drive. The longer hitter should have 3 or 4-iron
to the green. It’s a big green with lots of places to
put the pin, but most eagles are made when it’s up
front.
Hole 16 Par 4 – 437 yards DR: 10
The trick is to be long and keep it in the fairway. If
you’re short and to the right, you face a long iron to
the green. The approach shot typically plays a little
longer than it looks. This is one of the bigger greens
and the putting surface is fairly flat.
Hole 17 Par 3 – 185 yards DR: 1
The 17th is the signature hole at Newport Beach
Country Club and the toughest on the back nine.
You’ve got to get it on the green on. The bunker will
catch any shots that miss right. The worst place to
miss is long and left when the pin is up on the top
tier. From there you have to hit down to the green
and it’s as quick as it can be.
Hole 18 Par 5 – 510 yards DR: 17
Those who hit good drives will go for it in two, but
with the elevated green and bunkers, it’s all carry to
get to the green. Those who flare it right on the
approach will end up in a fairway bunker about 40
yards out – and nobody wants to be there.
Course: Par 71 (35/36)
10 Questions for
BoB Waltos
MANAGING PARTNER, THE WALTOS GROUP, NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL
1 HoW did 2011 measure up for tHe Waltos Group and nortHWestern mutual?
2011 was a banner year for Northwestern Mutual. During that
period of time we were able to receive the highest financial strength
ratings awarded to any life insurer by all four of the major rating
agencies (A.M. Best Company A++ (highest), 2/2011; Fitch Ratings
AAA (highest), 8/2011; Moody’s Investor Service Aaa (highest),
10/2011; Standard & Poors AA+ (second highest), 8/2011. Ratings are
subject to change.) and the company expects to pay out dividends of
nearly $5B during this interesting economic time although dividends
are not guaranteed Northwestern Mutual continues to pay industryleading
dividends over this difficult economic period.
The Waltos Group measured up well in many areas. It was our
largest new client acquisition year, our largest revenue year, our largest
asset growth for our wealth management investment business and our
employee benefits division had record premium under management.
We were able to attract nearly 40 new full-time representatives and
nearly 25 new interns to the office.
During this period of time, we also signed lease extensions to 2022
and finished a remodel of our nearly 30,000 square feet in Newport
Beach in addition to our three other local offices.
We were also proud to once again be named a master agency by
GAMA International, which puts us in an elite group – the top 1% of
financial security providers.
2 WHat are your financial Goals for 2012?
Growth is our primary goal. We’re seeing unprecedented
consumer demand for financial guidance and financial strength, and as
a result, we’re looking to meet more clients and recruit more financial
professionals. Continuing on this stable growth pattern allows us to
provide the very best service and planning for our existing and new
clients. In order to keep pace with consumer demand we plan to add
50 new full-time financial representatives as well as 75 financial
representative interns.
It's important to note that Northwestern Mutual continues to be
one of the best places to work in the insurance industry (Named by
Glassdoor.com’s “Best Places to Work” Survey, Dec. 2010.) and the
internship has consistently been named one of America's top 10
internships for the last 15 years. (1997-2011,Vault Guide to Top
Internship: top Ten Internships 1997-2000, 2011. Top Financial
Internships 2010-2011.)
3 do you Have a 5-year lonG ranGe prediction?
Our vision for the organization is to continue in our growth pattern.
We plan to double the size of our office, as defined by a number of
clients, a number of new relationships, a number of advisors, and then
obviously the size of our asset base, and our insurance and asset base
4 WHat do you recommend your clients reGardinG investinG?
It doesn’t make sense to use someone else’s financial plan. Since
every family’s financial goals and needs are different, there are no ‘onesize
fits all’ answers. It’s important to make a roadmap for yourself.
And a financial professional can be your compass to help craft the
roadmap and help to keep you on track.
We are seeing a lot of people in Orange County who are looking for
that kind of custom guidance.
We recommend focusing on risk based solutions first; followed by
wealth accumulation, wealth preservation and wealth distribution. We
really do this by developing long-term client relationships; not by
completing transactions. We focus on having consistent contact and
meaningful communication. This strategy works for our clients in all
economic cycles.
5 is life insurance a Good Bet today? if so, WHat kind?
If you’ve planned for life’s challenges with an effective roadmap,
that’s when you start climbing off the rollercoaster and start achieving
financial security. This economy has been challenging for everybody.
It’s been a rollercoaster ride for many of us. The question I’ve been
hearing is, “how can I get off this rollercoaster? I don’t want a plan that
works in February, but doesn’t work in March. I just want a high-quality
plan that works in all-conditions, has some guarantees and delivers
safe, steady growth over the long-term so I can meet my goals.” The
key is to shape a personal roadmap for yourself to stay on course and
navigate the bumps in the road. Life insurance can be a wise
component of a holistic financial security plan.
tHe Waltos Group seeks neW recruits. WHo are you lookinG to Hire, and WHat
6
qualifications do you seek?
We are looking for individuals with a strong work ethic and a
passion to help others.
To keep pace with consumer demand for financial guidance, we
will add 50 new full-time financial representatives and 75 interns. When
we look at the make-up of the 50 representatives about 15 of the new
representatives will come from our existing internship program. These
are people who took advantage of the opportunity to test-drive the
career. They were fully licensed while in college. They have had the
opportunity to experience building fundamentals of the business and
they desire the opportunities it provides.
10 of our recruits will be just out of school or job changers. These
are people who are attracted by the opportunity to help people achieve
their goals, after being supported by one of the best training
organizations in the industry.
20 of the people will be career changes. These are professionals
who believe they have reached the ceiling in the current occupation

and are looking for an opportunity to grow in a challenging job market. They are looking
for a company and an industry that provides value, and people perceive the value of
planning as a give back to society.
And lastly, we will have 5 people with industry experience that will be looking for
the value that we provide on the planning side, the platform, or maybe more
importantly, the specialty programs that we provide.
In the Internship program we look for someone who is coachable, has leadership
skills, self-motivated, goal oriented, ambitious, entrepreneurial mindset (want to learn
what it’s like to run their own business while having support of a team), great
communication and courage (not afraid to get out of comfort zone). We actively
recruit at Chapman University, USC, UCLA, CSULB, CSUF, UCI, Concordia,
Vanguard, UC Riverside, Cal Poly Pomona, La Sierra University, University of
Redlands and CSU San Bernardino
monetary means, but also through the personal time commitments of the more than
100 financial professionals in our organization. Our Financial Representatives are
continually spending their time giving back to a variety of charity organizations,
spending thousands of hours every year. The extent of our commitment sets us apart
from other organizations in our industry.
