The commercials for an insurance company show how they
show up in a time of urgent need. They show up when
there is an accident and compare themselves to others who
don’t appear to make this claim. It brings to mind the need
to grasp this simple concept: We are where we are on
purpose. We have been planted in this location as a
church for a specific reason.
I recall a conversation I had with Walter Hickman, the first
called pastor at Pea Ridge Baptist, when he and his wife
were in Huntington for the churches 50 th anniversary
celebration. He talked about the beginning of his church
and the heart they had for this community. He would often
go door-to-door and invite people to the church, seeking to
understand their needs and help them find, at Pea Ridge,
a place for them to grow in their relationship with Jesus
Christ. The church was started because Christians in the
city were burdened for there to be a gospel present in this
community which was just beginning to boom in the early
50’s. There was an urgency to reach this area with the
gospel of Jesus Christ.
Is there the same urgency today? Is there a heavy burden
to bring the gospel to this community where we are
located? Are we positioning ourselves to understand and
meet the needs of those who live in the neighborhoods
around the church?
About a year ago, many of us were part of the My Circle
training held at Pea Ridge. In this training, we learned of
the importance of being intentional in looking at those
people in our sphere of influence and determining how we
are being a gospel presence in their lives. We were
personally challenged to name at least three people, i.e.,
neighbors, co-workers, friends, family, and begin to pray for
them and find opportunities to share the gospel with them.
This sparked a great deal of personal awareness for me
personally and I began to pray about who that would be.
I have tried to identify those people for me personally and
stretch myself in reaching out to them.
This same concept of looking at our “circle of accountability”
is true for the church. Are we identifying the needs of
people in the community around the church and looking for
ways to be a gospel presence in their lives? A good way to
think about the urgency of this issue is to ask a question:
If our church were removed from the neighborhood today,
would it be noticed that we were gone?
Focusing on specific geography is not a new concept, in
fact it is a Biblical concept. When Jesus was leaving the
earth and giving his final instructions to the group of
followers he said, “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit
has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem
and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts
1:8, ESV). He was saying, start where you are and work out from
there. Over the past few years, we have made a more concentrated
effort to reach out to our community. We have been
intentional about ministry at Forrest Bluff, we have been picking
children up for church on the van, and we have tried to be present
with the gospel. But there is still so much to do. A recent report
that gives demographic information about people in a three mile
radius around the church revealed the following information:
There are approximately 22,000 people who live in this 3 mile
radius
76% are between the ages of 22-69
44% were classified as Middle American Families
18% were classified as Senior Life
32% were Single Mothers
32% said they had no faith involvement or preference for
historic Christian religious affiliations (approximately 6,600
people)
So the question remains and keeps us focused…do we have a
burden or feel an urgency to reach any of these people with the
gospel. How will we do this? I believe it begins with a burden for
the lost-ness of our community. It we don’t feel an urgency to
share the gospel with those who need to see it and hear it and
experience it through our lives, we will do nothing about it.
When are hearts and captivated by an burden for lost souls, then
we will be creative and resourceful in ways to engage the lost
methodologically.
Let me encourage you in some ways to become spiritually aware
of your community. First, take a walk or drive through your
community. Notice homes and people and whatever else catches
your eye. It is amazing how many times we are blinded to things
in the most familiar of places (like our own neighborhoods).
Second, pray for the people and situations you encounter.
Ask God to reveal what you can do for them. Third, do the same
for our church community (this might be the same for you).
This will be a good start to developing a burden, and urgency for
the lost in our communities.
Like a Good Neighbor…Pea Ridge is There! May God give us
eyes to see and ears to hear and hearts to perceive the needs of
the lost in our community. And may we continue to strive to
pursue our mission, “To Know Christ and Make Him Known” as
we give every man, women and child repeated opportunities to
hear, see and experience through our lives the gospel!

Van Drivers Needed
During Cross Crew Sunday we found out that there are
some youth at the Hovah Underwood Children’s Home
at Ona who would like to attend church. We need some
drivers to volunteer.
Please let Christina Black know if you would like to
serve by driving the van. We have many children that
depend on the van each week to get them to and from
Sunday school.
Let's work together and help people
get to church to serve the Lord.
What is Cross Crew Sunday?
Cross Crew Sunday is specifically designed for our church to
make an impact with the Gospel in our community. We always
meet on Sunday for a time of worship to honor Jesus Christ and
others in our community see us coming and going. Cross Crew
Sunday is just moving our worship and the message of the gospel
to the community!
Last year we led worship in nursing homes, did some yard work, painted and
other projects. We are now looking for projects for April 28. If you know any
specific individuals or groups whom we can serve, please let us know.
We are also looking for team leaders for many of these activities, please contact
Michelle Norweck at 304-710-0628 or
email at: gagirl@suddenlink.net .
Next Cross Crew Sundays are April 28 and September 29.
Where Can You Serve At PRBC?
We are always looking for people to serve in various aspects of ministry here at PRBC.
Serve
Each week, many people are needed to teach our children, youth, and adults, run media equipment,
make visits to individuals, hand out bulletins, drive vans, etc. Some of these are small, short-time, easy jobs.
If you are not currently serving a some capacity at church, please consider volunteering at least once a month!
God has given you talents to use for His glory!
For more information on any aspect of service here at the church, contact Pastor Greg or Pastor Will.
Sunday School Classes
We have been studying Psalms 23 and some of our students
memorized it! (YEAH!) We have been learning about listening to
God. God talked to Samuel when he was a little boy-God talked
to Elijah when he was much older. God wants all of us to listen
to Him. God also wants us to help others...to show His love to
others by doing and giving.
Our students recently spent one Sunday making four cuddle
blankets for a local family who lost everything in a house fire.
We look forward to seeing our children continue to grow in their
love for Jesus as we share stories from the Bible. It is so
important at this age to establish good attendance and the value
of Bible study. These lessons are an important part of a young
Christian’s foundation.
Leigh Ann Creasy teaches the younger, K-
2nd, and Connie Forth teaches the 3rd-5th.
Diane Heck opens and teaches all ages.
Please make an effort to have your children
participate in Sunday School.
March-April
Our children in Sunday school memorized this
wonderful chapter as written below. Did you
ever memorize the 23rd Psalm?
Psalm 23
A psalm of David
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores
my soul. He guides me in paths of
righteousness for His name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil,
for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence
of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the
house of the Lord forever.
