VIEWS ON EARTH is designed
from the ground up to be
a glossy print magazine. I
adamantly believe in print
and the feel of paper, hand
delivered by direct mail.
The inspired writing and the
excellence of the photography
will separate VIEWS ON
EARTH from everything else.
VIEWS ON EARTH will prove
that wonderful storytelling,
unbiased quality journalism
and outstanding photography
never go out of style.
VIEWS ON EARTH will help
craft a shared vision with
people from all walks of life
and become the trusted print
companion without peer that
readers treasure and collect.
Kevan Khanamirian
Founder & CEO
Kevan’s introduction to the
outdoor community and path to
developing VIEWS ON EARTH
started in 1975 at a family owned
business called Extrasport, Inc.,
a manufacturer of lifejackets
used around the globe for
canoeing, kayaking, rafting and
day sailing. Kevan’s extensive
network of contacts makes
VIEWS ON EARTH possible.

VIEWS ON EARTH creates a
unique intersection through layers
of multiple social networks.
What does that mean?
It means the people from all walks
of life in America and around
the globe who enjoy all forms of
recreation and leisure; or simply
stated the outdoor community.
They garden, picnic, bird
watch, visit parks, fish, hunt,
swim, paddle, backpack, climb,
ski, snowboard, 4-wheel, RV,
powerboat, sail, surf, bicycle, run,
jog, walk and pursue activities
of every kind imaginable,
even when sitting still.
The school teacher is a fly
fisher, the print buyer a paddler,
the carpenter a hunter, the
mechanic a backpacker, the
speech therapist a birdwatcher,
the silviculture apprentice a
snowboarder, the marketing
director a 4-wheeler, the
graphic designer a climber, the
programmer a cyclist, the CEO
a skier, the baggage handler a
sailor, the engineer a surfer, and
the physicist and her husband are
off to see Yosemite for the very
first time in their brand new RV.
This massive cross section
of civilization needs a glossy
print magazine that welcomes
them into the conversation
about quality of life. VIEWS
ON EARTH is that glossy print
magazine produced on paper.
VIEWS ON EARTH will connect with
the public unlike anything else.
VIEWS ON EARTH is focused in a positive way to discuss quality of life
issues whether they are in the backwoods or at the top of the citadel.
It is founded on the guiding principle of the new millenium:
global awareness that each generation influences the next.
VIEWS ON EARTH places science and nature at the top, is supported
by the visual beauty of its design and editorial strengths, and lastly,
it explores the proposition of using or not using the natural world...
hence the worlds of science, art, and commerce become one.
VIEWS ON EARTH connects-the-dots
on the environment for the public.
VIEWS ON EARTH will not
be slanted toward adrenaline
junkies or armchair travelers...
People actively or
vicariously enjoy all forms
of recreation and leisure.
VIEWS ON EARTH will cover
family and individual pursuits
unlike anybody else.
But VIEWS ON EARTH is not
just an activity magazine.
VIEWS ON EARTH will not
be slanted toward treehuggers
or clear-cutters...
Many people believe the very
best of human ecology can
be found on a planet where
each one of us is an educated
caretaker, not an ignorant taker.
The problem is that people
can’t seem to agree on what an
“educated caretaker” is or how to
define what an “ignorant taker” is.
VIEWS ON EARTH will not
be slanted toward meat
eaters or vegetarians...
These same people are the
individuals who own large
and small organizations.
They operate mills, factories
and local main street stores.
They work or volunteer for notfor-profits
of every stripe.
They are social and
environmental entrepreneurs.
They are the workers who
manufacture products
and provide services of
every kind imaginable.
They are you.
VIEWS ON EARTH will
not be slanted toward the
faithful or the humanist...
It will cover all sides of the many
environmental questions.
VIEWS ON EARTH will provide
a clear view of human ecology
through the eyes of multiple
stakeholders from all walks of life.

Who else can document history and social changes
as accurately and as vividly as the photographer?
all other industries, and there are few people unaffected
Society has become increasingly
removed from the earth
Forests provide the services
needed to sustain all life on
We are entering a
period of change.
Globalization has made us
closer to everyone else, but it
also has made our collective
impact on the planet harsher
and more precarious.
VIEWS ON EARTH is an element
of change that will allow us to see
our common ground – where we
agree on the issues and where we
share common values. With that
common ground, we can move
to solutions that are supported
by a very large majority.
These solutions would be the
result of good change; of change
that moves us away from often
petty disagreements to important
areas of agreement and the will
to move forward with new ideas.
Visually and verbally, this is my
hope for VIEWS ON EARTH.
Fundamentalism is a good thing.
Not the polarizers who see the
world in black and white; I don’t
think they’re fundamentalists.
They’re zealots, and they exist
everywhere there’s a philosophy,
religion and (all its -isms),
environmentalism, capitalism,
socialism, name your -ism,
and you’ll find self-proclaimed
fundies. No matter what, we’re
wrong, they’re right; just ask
them. A true fundamentalist
is interested in bedrock...the
fundus...the foundation...the base
on which everything stands.
Fundamentally, everyone loves
the world, even if they don’t know
it. To create a space where the
primal impulse is to discuss what
is beautiful about the earth, and
how we can enjoy it together
without creating a mess seems
like a natural thing to do.
VIEWS ON EARTH is such a
place. People who fundamentally
love the earth, want to enjoy
it, and respect the reality that
hunters and vegetarians both
love their planet. Let the zealots
obsess over philosophy; let’s talk
about what’s fundamental in
VIEWS ON EARTH won’t be just
VIEWS ON EARTH will be more
than refreshing, like a muchneeded
breath of fresh air. It will
be great, finally, at long last, to
find a magazine that is not so far
VIEWS ON EARTH understands
I do not want to be told what
I should think or believe.
It will be more than refreshing
to be presented with a wide
range of unaltered stories so I
More than refreshing will be
the quality of the content
without hundreds of ineffective
content of the magazine.
It will be more than refreshing
high quality images designed
So much of what we hear or
see is driven by an agenda.
From my perspective the media,
business and industry have
added to the confusion and
nationwide cynicism on just
about everything but especially
about the environment.
The publishing industry has not
helped by reducing magazines
to nothing but page after page
of advertising and insulting
editorial concoctions.
VIEWS ON EARTH
changes that dynamic.
VIEWS ON EARTH will cover
the environment, science,
industry, all things outdoors
and more with its unique
unbiased editorial platform.
Its great editorial content
and world-class photography
will bowl people over.
Its really exciting to see something
in this day and age that has been
designed to be a glossy print
magazine. A stunning magazine
people can hold in their hands.
Anything made well enough to be
passed down through generations
is the ultimate form of recycling
— whether it be tangible, like
our furniture, or conceptual...
such as VIEWS ON EARTH.
While we have reinforced our
commitment to ensuring the longterm
health and sustainability
of our own forests, VIEWS ON
EARTH makes its commitment
to the long-term health and
sustainability of our planet...
Only through open forums
of people sharing ideas and
concerns about our planet can
we hope to reverse the current
trend of diminishing resources.
Oftentimes we think of “recycling”
in terms of blue bins and “paper
or plastic”, however, it can take
on a new meaning when we look
at it in terms of ideas. We have
a long history of sustainability
based on that. Nothing is truly
new, so when ideas are recycled,
new spins are woven into them...
and wonderful futures are built.
Change is constant and one item
we know for certain is that what
we see today, will be different
tomorrow. Throughout time it has
been the art of telling the story,
from the impact of analogous
tales to straightforward, spot
on journalism, that has sparked
external debate, encouraged
internal studying and lead
to a dialogue of learning.
Today, as the inevitable winds of
change shift the environments
- social, political and natural - in
which we live, it is important that
we in the outdoor community
do not live vicariously as
arm chair spectators.
We need to participate, challenge
our understandings, consider
the other side and engage
in the understanding of why,
what, where, when and how.
VIEWS ON EARTH is the spark
that will fire up the dialogue.
Scott has spent his life pursuing
the outdoor dream, always
trying to find the balance
between job and play. He is
VIEWS ON EARTH will be a
maverick of a magazine.
It will not follow a formula, nor
put forth an agenda. Rather than
filtering the works of writers
and photographers through
their prism, VIEWS ON EARTH
gets out of the way, providing
a stage for the works of the
creative set to enlighten and
articles about the outdoors.
And sometimes they just tell
a good story, about places
we’d like to go and see, on
adventures big and small.
Manufacturing and print media,
two industries that I believe form
the foundation of our nation’s—
any developed nation’s—strength,
are about to get a much-needed
makeover in VIEWS ON EARTH.
For manufacturing, the
backbone of the economy,
VIEWS ON EARTH will challenge
conventional wisdom by telling
the stories of U.S. manufacturers
who continue to grow and
contribute mightily to our
economy and quality of life -- as
well as those who are leading the
way to a more sustainable future.
For journalism, the bedrock of our
democracy, VIEWS ON EARTH
will demonstrate the power of
print in engaging a large audience
with powerful photography and
authentic, thoughtful articles
on a range of lifestyle topics.
The two industries are under
siege, with pundits predicting
their imminent demise. For
too long, manufacturers
and print journalists have
allowed these doomsayers
to shape popular opinion.
With VIEWS ON EARTH,
that’s going to change.
VIEWS ON EARTH will provide
a great service for our country.
“Kids, come inside, your
dinner’s getting cold.”
Twenty years ago, these words
echoed across America millions
of times each evening.
Today, this phrase is seldom heard.
Parents are concerned as they
witness the increasingly sedentary
lifestyle that kids are adopting.
Mounting time in front of video
games and TV, reduced PE
in school and a drop in team
sports participation are leading
to a generation of kids that are
less physically active and more
overweight. It’s time to reengage
our youth to find joy, activity and
solace in the outdoors. At the
same time, we must dig in and
have a frank conversation about
how to create a culture that values
our wilderness areas, making
them a top priority for humanity.
VIEWS ON EARTH will help
shape the legacy we pass
on to future generations.
I’m a forester. My father was
a forester. My uncle was a
professor of forestry.
I grew up learning about
nature, forests and the need
for management. With proper
management, our forests can
meet a variety of needs and
provide wood products along
with clean air, clean water,
wildlife habitat and recreation.
As our society becomes
more urbanized, people lose
the connection between the
products they use every day
and where they come from.
VIEWS ON EARTH can help
rebuild that connection through
high quality photography and
top- flight editorial content. Some
believe that the best way to save
forests is to stop using wood
and paper products. VIEWS ON
EARTH can visibly show that the
reason we have as much forest
as we do is because the forest
has economic value to the people
who own them. Thankfully most
of our forestland, especially in
the South, is privately owned.
We need a publication like
vice president of the North
Carolina Forestry Association
since 1988. A graduate of North
Carolina State University with
a Forest Management Degree,
he has more than 30 years of
experience in the forestry industry
both at the local and national
level. He currently serves on
“Sustainable Development”
incorporates an array of subjects
and agendas, and this makes
it enormously difficult for a
business to understand what is
expected of it or if it is following
broadly accepted sustainability
policies and practices. Agencies,
labor unions, businesses,
consumer rights groups, social
and environmental activists
and politicians each have their
own definitions of sustainable
development with emphasis
on elements that are central to
their respective agendas. Only
when they take the time and
find the means to talk to one
another frankly do they create
a basis for real understanding
and mutual progress.
© Ancil Nance
The Forests Dialogue showed me
that when people from disparate
backgrounds and agendas talk
to one another with open minds
they find more similarities than
differences in their concerns and
they learn to understand subtle
but important differences in
perspectives and aspirations.
VIEWS ON EARTH opens the
possibility for similar exchanges
of information and views
among a very large and broad
community of conservation
and sustainability interests via
a steady flow of candid articles
with stunning photography that
reminds us of what we each strive
to sustain in a variety of ways.
VIEWS ON EARTH also opens
a potential door for broader
communication and collaboration
among parties that would not
otherwise come to know one
another or to realize that there
are mutual interests among
parties where they would
least expect to find them.
