Station
The structure is a former life saving
station located on the shores of
picturesque Betsie Bay. The building
has been historically restored and has
an occupancy of 280. A large deck
overlooking the bay allows for additional
space. The Life Saving Station comes
complete with kitchen facilities and is
handicap accessible. Tent and canopies
are available from a Village sponsored
Social Events Manager,
Crystal Mountain
hile there is nothing simple about planning a
wedding – ladies, you know of what I speak –
often times simple makes for the most memorable of
wedding favors.
I recall a late summer wedding in which the bride
and groom gave each of their guests Petoskey stones
on which a magnet was glued. Each was accompanied
by a card that on the front read, “This Petoskey stone
carries the promise of tomorrow,” and on the other side
was written, “you will have one more day in the place
you love best with the person you love most.” Reading
the passage I couldn’t help but smile thinking the stone
served as a wonderful reminder of a beautiful promise
and as a magnet could post another important reminder
to pick up milk at the store.
Whether poetic, practical, or a perfect combination
of the two, within the quaint shops and boutiques of
northern Michigan lay countless gifts that your guests
can savor for a moment or cherish for a lifetime.
A ìcherryî good idea
your guests have traveled from afar to experience
your authentic “Up North” wedding. Why not send
them home with a tasty treat unique to the region? For
instance, the Cherry hut (Beulah, MI) offers a broad
selection of cherry jams, jellies, coffee, and chocolate
covered treats. For more information check out www.
cherryhutproducts.com.
Local wines make a fine gift
Nestled along the same parallel as Bordeaux and
Burgundy in France, northern Michigan vineyards
produce a diverse selection of fine wines that make
for great wedding favors. Larry Mawby, who has been
internationally recognized for his sparkling wines, even
offers personalized labels. For more information go to
www.lmawby.com. ›››
Catch compliments with honey
In the case of the age old question, “To bee or not to bee,”
the former makes for an excellent choice in wedding favors.
The very bees that help pollinate northern Michigan’s
abundant cherry and apple orchards each spring also
produce a great deal of delicious honey. Sleeping Bear
Farms’ (Beulah, Michigan) Star Thistle honey can only
be found in northern Michigan. For more information
view their website at www.sleepingbearfarms.com.
BeeDazzle your guests
BeeDazzled (Benzonia) is in the business of making
fine gifts from beeswax. Choose from variety of candles,
soaps, creams and lotions produced by the busy bees
of Benzie County. Never let it be said that it’s none of
your beeswax! You can find plenty of information about
BeeDazzled at www.beedazzled.com.
Do a favor for Mother Earth
Perhaps the money you’ve budgeted for wedding favors
could be used to preserve the beautiful Benzie County
landscape that made your wedding day so special. Let
your guests know that renewable energy credits have
been purchased in their name to cover the carbon
footprint of your wedding. Crystal Mountain offers
this option to all wedding parties or contact your local
energy provider to learn more about their green power
programs.9
wedding tip
Hair & Makeu p
A bride's hair should complement
her gown, not compete with it. The formality of your
outfit is key and should dictate the direction you go
with your hair. For a chic, modern ensemble like a
pant suit or a simply cut dress, either slick back hair
or wear it in a sleek blow-out. For country or beach
wedding, wear your hair in loose curls sprinkled with
small flowers, or tie it back and accent with a flower.
Ball gown style dresses look best with dramatic updos.
Do a trial run with your hair and makeup and have
photos taken to make sure you’re happy with your
appearance. Check out your makeup both in natural
light and indoors to be sure it’s not too heavy. It is
important to make sure your makeup looks light, clean
and natural. Even though your wedding is a very special
day, keep in mind that you still want to look like you.
wedding tip
P hotos
If you have any specific photos you want,
communicate your wishes with your
photographer before the wedding. This
will ensure the photos you expect are the
photos that you will get. keep in mind the reason why
you hired the photographer. For example, if you hired
a photographer that is known for a very candid photos,
don’t expect the photographer to spend hours taking
posed pictures.
If you've spent a long time creating invites, menus,
flower arrangements etc, you'll want these little details
captured on film too. For more informal snaps, it's a
lovely idea to place single-use cameras on the tables at
the reception so your guests can capture their version
of the day.
wedding tip
Invitations
keep it simple. Top-of-the-line papers, color ink, and
custom designing will jack up the price. Use response
postcards instead of cards and mini-addressed envelopes.
If you're concerned about postage, stay away from
oversize or bulky styles, and opt for thermography over
engraving or letterpress.
ongratulations! you are now husband and wife.
So how about we send you off with some style!
Depending on your spirit of adventure and the design
of your wedding dress, here are seven unique ways to
make your exit as a married couple:
Hot Air Balloon
Spend your first moments as husband and wife floating
effortlessly over the breathtaking northern Michigan
landscape, sharing a Champaign toast in a hot air balloon.
www.brooksideinn.com/balloon.htm.
Sail Boat
A great idea for ceremonies along the lakeshore, sail off
into the sunset for your happily ever after in a sail boat.
Crystal Lake Adventure Sports rents sail boats for up to
four passengers. They even offer private lessons should
your guest list lack a sea captain. Be sure to check out
www.crystallakeadventuresports.com.
Canoe or Kayak
The more adventurous couple may choose to begin their
journey down the river of life in a canoe or kayak. Those
planning a romantic riverside ceremony or an exchange
of vows along the lakeshore can contact the honor
Trading Post to inquire about suitable transportation.
www.canoeplatteriver.com.
Classic Roll s Royce
Make your exit with class in a stately 1960 Rolls Royce
Silver Cloud or 1954 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith from Bay
Area Classic Limousine LLC. For more infortmation
Chairlift
Few matrimonial settings are more memorable than the
beautiful view atop Crystal Mountain. It also lends itself
very well to a unique send-off by the Crystal Clipper
Chairlift. The photo as you ride to the base of the
mountain in wedded bliss is one that few if any of your
friends will have in their wedding albums.›››
Sleigh Ride
While a majority of weddings do take place during
the summer months there are some who prefer the
majestic backdrop provided by the abundant northern
Michigan snowfall. Abraham’s Carriage Service, located
in Mesick, can provide an enchanted sleigh ride for two.
www.abrahamscarriageservice.com.
Sno wb oard
Before you cut the wedding cake take a moment to
carve up the slopes. Anyone can do the electric slide
so set yourselves apart, take the plunge and then throw
a backside 540 in the halfpipe? Crystal Mountain has
the wedding space and terrain features to accommodate
both! 9
