The earliest and most reliable record respecting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> origin <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this in-<br />
teresting society is in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> committee's first report, presented to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting<br />
held <strong>on</strong> M<strong>on</strong>day, I j December, 1834, at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> "New Unitarian Chapel," Cam-<br />
bridge Street, Crescent-<br />
instituted by young men who were formerly teachers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> New Meeting<br />
Sunday School.<br />
The three following resoluti<strong>on</strong>s were passed at a meeting held <strong>on</strong> 29<br />
June, 1834, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> young men who had engaged to c<strong>on</strong>duct <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sunday<br />
School :-<br />
(a) That this meeting, believing that ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Unitarian Sunday School and c<strong>on</strong>-<br />
gregati<strong>on</strong> is desired by a c<strong>on</strong>siderable porti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Unitarians <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Birming-<br />
ham, do agree to form itself into a society for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> promoti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se objects.<br />
(b) That a canvass be made immediately for subscripti<strong>on</strong>s to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> above objects.<br />
(c) That <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> venerable Mr. James Luckcock, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sunday Schools in<br />
Birmingham, be requested to take <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fice <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> treasurer to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> instituti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />
These young men raised am<strong>on</strong>gst <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves and a few immediate<br />
friends subscripti<strong>on</strong>s to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> A50 per annum ; and <strong>on</strong> Sunday,<br />
17 August, 1834-<br />
with scarcely anything in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building, except a few rough planks, and tem-<br />
porary c<strong>on</strong>veniences, and a few reading books, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> work was begun.
