AUTHOR'S NOTE.<br />
ONE morning l<strong>on</strong>g ago, at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> my Whitchurch ministry, 1<br />
was hunting in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> vestry press <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a <str<strong>on</strong>g>Midland</str<strong>on</strong>g> Meeting-house for a missing<br />
book, when a copy <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ' Proceedings <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Centenary Celebrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> M<strong>on</strong>thly Meeting, 1882,' revealed itself. This was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first time for<br />
me to see this pamphlet, and in glancing over its pages my eyes were<br />
caught by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se words in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ' Historical Sketch ' by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. David<br />
Maginnis, F. R. Hist. S. :-<br />
It should be menti<strong>on</strong>ed am<strong>on</strong>g unaccomplished intenti<strong>on</strong>s that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Meeting<br />
purposed to prepare a <str<strong>on</strong>g>History</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rise and Growth <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> N<strong>on</strong>c<strong>on</strong>formity<br />
in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Midland</str<strong>on</strong>g> Counties, with M<strong>on</strong>ographs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> several c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
included in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Meeting. It was agreed to commit <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> preparati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
general history to Mr. Gord<strong>on</strong>, who was to edit <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> M<strong>on</strong>ographs c<strong>on</strong>-<br />
tributed by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Members <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir respective <str<strong>on</strong>g>Churches</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Mr. Gord<strong>on</strong> under-<br />
took <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> task colt nuzo~-e, but death overtook him before he had been .able<br />
to make any progress with it. May <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hope be cherished that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> work<br />
will yet be uildertakeii and performed, as such a work, well d<strong>on</strong>e, is a<br />
great desideratum for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> benefit <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> young people and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> less informed<br />
Members <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>nected with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Meeting.<br />
This expressi<strong>on</strong> from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mo?zthdy Meeti?zg that such a work should<br />
some day be undertaken fixed itself so firmly in my mind, that I forthwith<br />
began collecting materials for it, and when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Seedsozc~er started <strong>on</strong> its<br />
still active and vigorous career it was my privilege to be able to c<strong>on</strong>tribute<br />
to its columt~s twenty-two m<strong>on</strong>thly sketches <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> various c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Midland</str<strong>on</strong>g> Christian Uni<strong>on</strong>. Here it seemed likely at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> time that<br />
my efforts would have ended, had it not been o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rwise decreed.<br />
The articles brought me two <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> happiest friendships <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> my life :<br />
those <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mrs. Ca<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rine Hutt<strong>on</strong> Beale, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Birmingham, and Mr. Edward<br />
Cobb, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lewes, but formerly <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Banbury.<br />
By a strange coincidence Mrs. Beale had given <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world her richly<br />
illustrated and splendid ' Memorials <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Old Meeting, Birmingham,'<br />
in that very year, at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> M<strong>on</strong>thly Meeti~zg bewailed its
