DUDLEY BOOK SOCIETY.<br />

Intimately bound up with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> history <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Old Meeting is that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dudley Book Society, which emanated from it. Mr. Joseph Ridgway,<br />

in his interesting article <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Book Society's history," says that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exact<br />

date <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its origin, and how it was brought about, are matters mostly <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

deducti<strong>on</strong> from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following train <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> reas<strong>on</strong>ing :-As our forefa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs had<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir social evenings at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most respectable hostelry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> towns in which<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y resided-am<strong>on</strong>g kindred spirits-so we find Dudley no excepti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The chief tradesmen <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> that time met at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Saracen's Head, at least <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

n<strong>on</strong>c<strong>on</strong>forming porti<strong>on</strong>, where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y smoked <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir pipes over a quiet tankard<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> home-brewed ; talking over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> events <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> day, business, politics,<br />

and religi<strong>on</strong>. It was in such a regi<strong>on</strong> and under such circumstances that<br />

this society germed. This c<strong>on</strong>jecture bears str<strong>on</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>firmati<strong>on</strong> from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

fact that from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this century-<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nineteenth-to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present<br />

day this society has been located in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hotel menti<strong>on</strong>ed, with <strong>on</strong>ly some<br />

small interims-<strong>on</strong>e at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dudley Arms and again at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bush I-Iotel.<br />

Their meetings were m<strong>on</strong>thly. Of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> age <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this society, it may be coeval<br />

with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Baylies's family. Why we may be allowed to think so is this :<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first decade <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this century it flourished as a society that had<br />

existed a l<strong>on</strong>g time before. The ministers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Old Meeting have gener-.<br />

ally been presidents. The society, however, is not a close <strong>on</strong>e, it has<br />

received into its company most sorts and c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> men. The circu-<br />

lati<strong>on</strong> list <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> members comprehends every shade <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> creed and politics. In<br />

that cosy meeting room <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> society many schemes for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> advancement<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> educati<strong>on</strong>, reforms-municipal and parliamentary-have been hatched.<br />

Church rates were opposed and some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> members suffered <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir goods<br />

"Dudley Herald, 15 October, 1898.<br />

to be sold <strong>on</strong> principle. The change in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> representati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> borough<br />

was effected through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> return <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mr. H. B. Sheridan. The Mechanics'<br />

Institute was floated in premises <strong>on</strong>ce occupied by Mr. John Finch, merchant,<br />

who gave to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Old Meeting its silver communioil chalices. The library<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Old Meeting was lent as a nucleus <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present library; and <strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> School Board and in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Council Chamber members have d<strong>on</strong>e much<br />

h<strong>on</strong>ourable work.<br />

Its secretaries in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nineteenth century include-Mr. Wm. Maurice,<br />

elected at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> annual dinner in 1805 ; Mr. Joseph Pitchfork, elected in 1836 ;<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> late town clerk, Mr. W. H. Brooke, 1856-1860 ; Mr. Joseph Ridgway,<br />

1860-1892 ; and Mr. H. A. Lewis, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present master <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Baylies's Charity<br />

School. The health <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> society has been well maintained through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

century, and shows no signs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age nor decadence. Its membership has<br />

been maintained-circling round twenty. More members have been tried,<br />

but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> books were too l<strong>on</strong>g in circulating. Floreat !<br />

THE DUDLEY DOUBLE LECTURE.<br />

The late James Scott, minister, Park Lane Chapel, Cradley, (p.v.),<br />

1789-1827, says, in his illS. history <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> that society, TAe Rev. J. WiGlets<br />
