excellent specimens <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> work. At Bewdley <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was, in 1892, in <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pews, a perfect wooden pitch pipe.<br />

'There are no memorial brasses older than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 23 at Whitchurch,<br />

which commemorate 41 pers<strong>on</strong>s, and cover <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> period from 1672, when<br />

Thomas Yate was born, to 1836, when hlrs. Beny<strong>on</strong> died at Bright<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The oldest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> st<strong>on</strong>e mural tablets is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ' Porter' <strong>on</strong>e at Alcester,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Latin inscripti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> which was "recently rendered into English, for<br />

this work, by Dr. Martineau.<br />

It cannot fall to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lot <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> many writers to be privileged to receive,<br />

for four successive works, signal help at Dr. Martineau's hands ; but<br />

so it is in my case, for, beginning with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Re <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> P~oz~i~ecial<br />

Assettrb4 in 1896, c<strong>on</strong>tinued to Vestiges in 1897, Codyto~zin in 1898, and,<br />

again, given for ArlidZand Chu~ches, all have been enriched by some c<strong>on</strong>-<br />

tributi<strong>on</strong> from him ; to whom my readers, no less than myself, owe thanks<br />

for such help. This book ~vould indeed be <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> poorer did it not c<strong>on</strong>tain<br />

his translati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> page 11.<br />

Not many men are now living vrho can speak with pers<strong>on</strong>al knowledge<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> four generati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a miilisterial family ; but my fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, born in 1813,<br />

hale, vigorous, and with unclouded memory, in 1899, has c<strong>on</strong>tributed to<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se pages various matters <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> interest c<strong>on</strong>cerning <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. David Davis,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Castellhywel, whom he knew in his boyhood, and at whose funeral in<br />

Llanv~enog Churchyard he was present in 1827 ; and <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his s<strong>on</strong>s, Tl~omas<br />

and Timothy, both ministers at Evesham, where he visited <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> latter, in<br />

1839, and was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>nce driven by him to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scene <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his coming ministry<br />

at Bloxham. For some particulars too <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his pers<strong>on</strong>al remembrances <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> eccentric Rev. Charles Lloyd, LLD., my readers and I are also his<br />

debtors.<br />

My own debt <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> gratitude and thanks to many corresp<strong>on</strong>dents and<br />

helpers is a heavy <strong>on</strong>e.<br />

From time to time several Welshmen, alumni <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Presbyterian<br />

College, Caermar<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n, have ministered in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Midland</str<strong>on</strong>g>s ; for dates and<br />

details respecting some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m I am under obligati<strong>on</strong>s to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. Rees<br />

Jenkin J<strong>on</strong>es, M.A., and, not for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first time, to my friend, Mr. Walter<br />

J. Evans, M.A., <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present Principal <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> College.<br />

Most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> my old bro<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r ministers in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> MortthQ Meetii'zg have, at<br />

some time or ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last ten years, given me <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir stores.<br />

One and all I thank, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ler <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m in this book some help, whenever<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y may have occasi<strong>on</strong> to seek it, respecting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> histories <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>-<br />

gregati<strong>on</strong>s to which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y minister.<br />

Brethren in o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r fields <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> labour have not refused <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir aid. Two<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly need be named-<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. Prebendary Egert<strong>on</strong>, M.A., now and for<br />

more than half a century past, rector <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Whitchurch, Salop, whose pers<strong>on</strong>al<br />

extracts from his parish registers and o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r kind <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fices are gratefully<br />

acknowledged ; and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. Henry Gord<strong>on</strong> Palmer, B.A., <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Hollyfort<br />

Rectory, Gorey, for so much that now appears in print for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first time,<br />

respecting his fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. John. Palmer, B.A., a former minister <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Old Meeting, Dudley.<br />

For matters genealogical and legal I hardly know how to thank<br />

sufficiently my friend, Mr. Arthur A. Rollas<strong>on</strong>. Verily is he a tower <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

strength for all who attempt <str<strong>on</strong>g>Midland</str<strong>on</strong>g> history in general, and that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Dudley and district in particular.<br />

To Mr. Noel A. Humphreys, Chief Clerk ; Mr. James Lewis, Superin-<br />

tendent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Records ; and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir willing staff at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>General</strong> Register Office,<br />

I owe and t&der thanks for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir c<strong>on</strong>tinued and successful efforts to produce<br />

from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> vaults <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> numerous registers I need to c<strong>on</strong>sult and examine.<br />

For perm;.-si<strong>on</strong> to freely use <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extensive and growing library-both<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> general and reference books-in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> University College <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Wales, I atn<br />

indebted to Principal Thomas F. Roberts, M.A., my near neighbour and<br />

friend ; whilst for extracts from books not in this library I have g<strong>on</strong>e,<br />

never without success, to Mr. John Hibbert Swann, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Free Reference<br />

Library, Manchester.<br />

In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> matter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> verifying inscripti<strong>on</strong>s, and furnishing ground plans,<br />

and sketches whenever wanted, I have availed myself <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> skilful hand<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mr. E. Vincent Wareing, Birmingham, who, as he says, " has spent<br />

many happy afterno<strong>on</strong>s and evenings in visiting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> homes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> old dissent<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Midland</str<strong>on</strong>g>s."<br />

One expressi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> deep-felt gratitude is left to this last. Only those<br />

knowing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> circumstances can at all realise how, during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> years this
