The following inscripti<strong>on</strong> (extant in 1871) was placed <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interior<br />

walls <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chapel :-<br />

Under happy auspices this chapel, dedicated to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> worship <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>e God and<br />

Fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all, originally erected 1705, was rebuilt in its present form, 1846,<br />

as a memorial <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> great act <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> public justice by which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> unrestricted<br />

right <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> private judgment in matters <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> religi<strong>on</strong> is established, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> peace-<br />

ful possessi<strong>on</strong> secured to n<strong>on</strong>-subscribing Dissenters <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all property transmitted<br />

to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir ancestors. Added to a voluntary subscripti<strong>on</strong> for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

rebuilding <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this chapel, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which his fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r was minister, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sum <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> L530<br />

was appropriated at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> request <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Edwin Wilkins Field, solicitor, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>,<br />

to whose acceptance it had been <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fered by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> n<strong>on</strong>-subscribing Dissenters<br />

in England and Ireland as an acknowledgment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> services rendered in aid<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir exerti<strong>on</strong>s to obtain <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> legislative recogniti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir right, as n<strong>on</strong>-<br />

subscribing c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s, to hold trust property in accordance with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

laws <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> land.<br />

This inscripti<strong>on</strong> has, since 1871, given place to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following, now <strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wall over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> inner door :-<br />

This chapel was rebuilt during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ministry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. William Field, by<br />

voluntary c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> friends, in additi<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sum <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> E530, which<br />

was generously devoted to that purpose by Edwin Wilkins Field, Esqre.,<br />

solicitor, L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>, to whom it had been presented as an acknowledgment<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his services in c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> passing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dissenters' Chapels<br />

Act.<br />

Samuel Turt<strong>on</strong>, who died in 1728, was doubtless <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first regular<br />

minister <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> society. The author has a note, for which, however, he<br />

has failed to find c<strong>on</strong>firmati<strong>on</strong>, to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> effect that Turt<strong>on</strong> was minister here<br />

in 1700. He was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> s<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> William Turt<strong>on</strong> (see p. 45), first minister <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Old Meeting, Birmingham ; his name and year <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> death are given in<br />

Dr. Evans's List, also that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his successor, John Bassett, who may have<br />

been related to his c<strong>on</strong>temporary, Josiah Bassett, minister at Cradley (see<br />

p. go). In a letter from Joseph Carpenter, minister at Warwick, dated<br />

Warwick, July 19, 1735,"* we meet with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following communicati<strong>on</strong> :-<br />

G' Mr. PhiZ@s is engaged [as r?zi?zister] to Ke?ziZ7oort/z for a year from Mid-<br />

sumllzer. I wish he may do as 7?zzuh good as his Predecessor has d<strong>on</strong>e hurt, who<br />

is now worki~zg ozct his ow?z ruin as fast as he can."<br />

Was this " predecessor," Bassett ?<br />

*Pvot. Diss. Afag., vol. v., p. 284.<br />

Mr. Philips " was Samuel Philips, who ministered (1736-1768-<br />

Bromsgrove, where he lived.<br />

Francis Blackmore was <strong>on</strong> friendly terms with him ; when minister<br />

in charge <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Christian Society <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Protestant Bissenters in Worcester,* he<br />

baptized three s<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Philips, at Bromsgrove, in hk house <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re.<br />

John Kirkpatrick, says <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. George Fox, in his charming and<br />

entertaining volume, G C The <str<strong>on</strong>g>History</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Park Lane Chapel, 1897 "-<br />

was born at Ir<strong>on</strong>gray, three miles from Dumfries. When Hezekiah [his s<strong>on</strong>]<br />

was but a little child his fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r removed to Kenilworth, to take charge <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Presbyterian Chapel <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re.<br />

In a foot note to this paragraph, A.G. says-<br />

He removed from Bedworth, where he was assistant to Julius Saunders, before<br />

1730, perhaps before 1724. He was M.A., probably <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Glasgow, and educated<br />

ministers at Bedworth.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>tinuing his story, Mr. Fox writes-<br />

From informati<strong>on</strong> kindly supplied by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly living representative <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Kirkpatricks, Mrs. Alice Green, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Southport [<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> great grand-daughter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

John Kirkpatrick], her granclfa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r [Hezekiah], and a little sister travelled<br />

all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> way from Scotland in panniers <strong>on</strong> a d<strong>on</strong>key's back. It is probable,<br />

in those days <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> scanty stipends and imperfect means <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> locomoti<strong>on</strong>, that<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> parents made <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> journey <strong>on</strong> foot. The Rev. John Kirkpatrick, at Kenil-<br />

worth, preached and printed a serm<strong>on</strong> in memory <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a little daughter, aged<br />

ten years and four m<strong>on</strong>ths, who died February 11, 1746-7, from virulent<br />

smallpox, after an illness <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly eight days. It appears that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> child was<br />

a prodigy <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> learning for her age, and possessed <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most attractive<br />

moral qualities. .. But <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chief interest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> serm<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sists in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> absence<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> anything like orthodoxy in it. The discourse is pervaded by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spirit <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Scriptures, and abounds with scriptural references ; but it is entirely free<br />

from anything savouring <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> doctrines <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> popular <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ology. Thus, in<br />

an inc<strong>on</strong>spicuous instance, is found an example <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> way in which, so early<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 18th century, orthodoxy had begun to disappear from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> old chapels.<br />

Sibree (pp. 163-166) gives an account <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ministers educated<br />

by Kirkpatrick, at Bedworth, where-<br />

he appears to have c<strong>on</strong>tinued in his work till about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> year 1750, when<br />

he ceased to labour and to live ; and, it is said, he was interred near <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

grave <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his predece~sor,<br />

"Angel Street, Worcester, Register <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Baptisms, 1699-1759.
