<strong>Red</strong> <strong>Book</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Butterflies</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Turkey</strong><br />

Doğa Koruma Merkezi – Nature Conservation Centre<br />

DKM works <strong>in</strong> partnership with government, NGOs, research<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions, experts and volunteers, aim<strong>in</strong>g to develop national<br />

capacity and a sound scientific and technical basis for effective nature<br />

conservation. It encourages and facilitates the systematic collection and<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> biodiversity and other data, and uses these both to identify<br />

priority areas for conservation, and to develop susta<strong>in</strong>able resource-use<br />

plans which will benefit biodiversity and people.<br />

DKM is the Turkish representative <strong>of</strong> Butterfly Conservation Europe<br />

(BCE), an umbrella organization for a network <strong>of</strong> partners and <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />

which aims both to stimulate and co-ord<strong>in</strong>ate conservation action for<br />

butterflies, moths and their habitats across Europe. BCE and Dutch<br />

Butterfly Conservation are partner<strong>in</strong>g DKM <strong>in</strong> the project Develop<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

basis for the active conservation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Turkey</strong>’s butterflies (2009-11) funded by<br />

the Dutch Government’s BBI-Matra programme.<br />

Evrim Karaçet<strong>in</strong> began to develop an <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> butterflies <strong>in</strong> 1996 when<br />

she was a Biology undergraduate at the Middle East Technical University<br />

(METU), Ankara, a university with a 4,000 ha campus famous for its<br />

rich diversity <strong>of</strong> butterflies. After complet<strong>in</strong>g her Masters she spent<br />

five years <strong>in</strong> the United States work<strong>in</strong>g on her PhD, study<strong>in</strong>g Ecology<br />

and Botany under Oregon State University’s Environmental Science<br />

programme. On her return to <strong>Turkey</strong> she started her current job as an<br />

Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>in</strong> Environmental Sciences at Erciyes University.<br />

Ever s<strong>in</strong>ce she was a student, Evrim has been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> many nature<br />

conservation projects, act<strong>in</strong>g as volunteer, researcher, advisor and teacher.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce 2007 she has worked on butterfly projects with DKM and Hilary<br />

Welch. Together with Ahmet Baytaş she is co-author <strong>of</strong> <strong>Butterflies</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Turkey</strong> Hand <strong>Book</strong> published by Doğa Derneği <strong>in</strong> 2008.<br />

Hilary Welch is a founder member <strong>of</strong> DKM and has been visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Turkey</strong>, to enjoy the landscapes and watch birds, s<strong>in</strong>ce 1989. For 35<br />

years her <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> natural history has developed and broadened as<br />

she has worked <strong>in</strong> nature conservation as a freelance consultant and<br />

volunteer, <strong>in</strong> the UK and abroad. In 2004 she moved from the UK<br />

to <strong>Turkey</strong>, and here a serious <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> butterflies began to develop,<br />

fuelled by the rich diversity <strong>of</strong> species and the publication <strong>of</strong> A Field<br />

Guide to the <strong>Butterflies</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Turkey</strong>, by Ahmet Baytaş, <strong>in</strong> autumn 2007.<br />

She has been delighted to be able to comb<strong>in</strong>e her knowledge, experience<br />

and enthusiasm with that <strong>of</strong> Evrim and many other experts to develop<br />

the red list and this book, which she hopes will make a concrete<br />

contribution to the conservation <strong>of</strong> butterflies <strong>in</strong> <strong>Turkey</strong>.<br />
