DRR Annual Progress Report 2010, Vol.1 – Varietal Improvement
Surpassing Pusa Basmati-1 in yield, possessing export quality basmati features with desirable
panel acceptability scores, 4 cultures were promoted to AVT-2BT. These include IET 21665 (RP
3644-1-19-5-5), IET 21663 (NP 742), IET 21669 (HUBR-10-9) and IET 21660 (NDR 6244) recording
26.57%, 21.65%, 21.24% and 20.86% higher yield than Pusa Basmati-1 with good grain, milling and
cooking quality characters as Taroari Basmati. Among these IET 21660 has tolerance to leaf blast,
neck blast and sheath rot while IET 21665 has tolerance to brown spot.
Thirty two entries were evaluated for yield at 10 locations and for entire range of quality
parameters including panel test. Cultures with yield superiority over Pusa Basmati-1 with quality
especially in kernel elongation after cooking surpassing Taroari Basmati are IET 21960 (Pusa 1509-
03-3-9-5) and IET 21959 (Pusa 1509-3-1-7-2) while on par with quality check for the same traits are
IET 21954 (UPR 3506-15-1-1) and IET 21953 (UPR 3506-7-1-1). Another three cultures with only
marginal yield gain over Taroari Basmati with desirable quality are IET 21955 (HKR 08-17), IET
21961 (NP-9-6) and IET 21969 (HKR 08-35). All merit promotion to AVT-1-BT. Among these
cultures IET 21954 has moderate resistance to RTV.
AROMATIC SHORT GRAIN TRIALS
India has astounding diversity of short grain aromatic rices which have appealing aroma and
cooking quality traits. Not much attention has been paid for the improvement of short grain aromatic
rices due to lack of markets and consumer awareness. Further, these land races have low productivity,
long growth duration and tall plant stature. Hence, it is important to develop semi dwarf, non-lodging,
