IMPORTANT STUFF
COVER STORY
International Ch. Hotwire’s Gitalong U
Renegade, CD (ASCA/AKC)-“GADER”
Little did I know when I picked out this cute
little puppy what a gem he would be. In addition,
I never imagined that he would have to
compete for his Obedience titles without a background
in “heeling.”
Gader came into my life at the same time as
something else, less wanted, came to stay with
me- a bum knee that incapacitates me for
months on end, making it impossible to walk
without assistive devices: (canes/crutches/
walkers/casts/braces).
You name it, I was wearing one of those darned
things on any given day, and so I had a problem.
How do we compete in a sport that requires me
teaching a puppy where “heel” is and how to
“gait change with heeling” when I can’t walk
normally, or the same, each day?
Well with practicing “find heel” continuously
,and working him on a limited training
schedule with Barbara Henry, this little guy figured
out what to do , so when we first entered
the ring and “heeled” for real, he won the class,
got his first ASCA Novice leg and went HIT.
He finished his ASCA CD, Spring 2009, in 2
more shows, with some interesting interpretations
of “heel”, but in the ribbons all the way,
and good scores to boot. Showed in AKC, and
he came out like a champ, with a very good
score, and High Scoring First Leg special award
and second place. Unfortunately, for him and
me, once again, I wound up unable to walk normally
and back on a cane for the next 8 weeks
before his next shows. We showed in Dixon last
week of October 2009, he won the class and in
the next weekend at Vallejo, we finished his CD
with a score of 196.5!
Of course, I am very grateful to his breeder and
to Barbara Henry for all her help! What a guy,
my little boy Gader!
Woujie Mailer
Congratulations to you and Gader, Woujie!
Pet Page Form 13
Dear Irene,
Thanksgiving is the time of year when we gather with
our friends and families to pause and appreciate all that
we have to be thankful for. In our homes, that gratitude
extends especially to our pets.
2009 has been a successful year in our effort to defend
the rights of pets and their owners, none of which would
be possible without you and the tens of thousands of
PetPAC members nationwide. I would like to take this
opportunity to say, from myself and all of the PetPAC
staff, thank you for your continued support.
We have been touched by the personal stories you have
shared with us, and have been humbled by your response
to our calls for help. PetPAC will continue to do
the work necessary to keep our pets safe.
We wish everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
Sincerely,
ASK THE JUDGE
Ima Newbie is excited about showing her little dog,
Fluff Ball, in Novice A. As the trial is to take place in
mid December, Ima decides to get into the spirit of the
season!!!
First, she paint's Fluff Ball's little toenails red and
green. (Alternating the colors, of course.)
Ima, herself, has a gorgeous Santa Suit she plans on
wearing, complete with sleigh bells!!
She made a matching red velvet coat and Santa hat for
Fluff Ball, which looks particularly stunning with Fluff
Ball's fluffy white coat. The little dog's outfit is completed
by a rhinestone studded collar with sleigh bells
attached. (And a matching rhinestone studded leash, of
course.)
Ima has just entered your ring. Now what?????????
AGILITY FROM KARIN
HOW TO BE HUMBLED
QUICKLY
Last weekend I was running Apache in his last trial of
the year and was hoping to come away with his open
standard title. We started off great on Saturday. We
finished with a perfect score and second place in the 16
inch class. One of our major problems has been the
weave poles. Apache is firmly convinced that they are
not important or necessary. They only slow him down.
In the excellent classes you are not allowed any refusals,
dog approaches obstacles and doesn’t work them the
first time, so you try again and are sucessful but it still
doesn’t count. That was the story in jumpers and fast.
Had to restart the poles in jumpers and that disqualified
us. You want to know what was really sad, Apache had
the fastest time! In fast,we had to restart the weaves and
that ate up too much time so we didn’t q there either.
On Sunday I entered the open standard ring sure that we
were going to earn our title and move up to the excellent
class. The only problem with that is that I forgot to ask
Apache’s opinion. He was definitely not working with
me that day. We started off with a wrong course
(allowed 1 in open) and then he refused to take a tunnel
a little further on (allowed 1 in open). Ok now we have
a refusal and a wrong course but still qualifying. I just
knew that there would be no more problems on this run.
Oops………here come the weave poles. According to
Apache, we don’t do weaves on Sunday! I think we
received 3 refusals at the beginning of the weave poles.
I just looked at him, thanked the judge and quickly left
the ring. Of course Apache had a very pleased with
himself look on his face. I should have just given up
then but being a little optomistic, I went ahead and tried
jumpers, no weaves on Sunday. I was beginning to get
the message. We went into fast and again no weaves but
by the time I finally gave up and went on to the next
obstacle too much time had elapsed.
I guess he showed me.
Agility is just about done for the year. There are a couple
more trials. I will not be running in them. Apache is
going on the road to become a champion and then when
he gets back and I get him retrained we will start anew
on our quest for a MACH, that stands for Master Agility
Champion, that goes in front of the dogs name. Do you
think I am dreaming too big. After all Apache will have
6
to start doing the weave poles. Oh well as they say
“dream on McDuff!”
All the agility competitors are patiently waiting for AKC
to approve all the rule changes that I told you about in
one of my previous columns. We are waiting and waiting
and waiting. AKC in all its infinte wisdom, does not
move into changes quickly. Must read, analyze and
reread all. When they finally make up their minds it will
all be done correctly. All of the changes will be for the
betterment of the sport and the safety of the dogs.
I want to remind everyone about our agility trial in
March. Please volunteer to come out and work. No
matter what the weather, everyone gets fed and everyone
always has a good time. I will be back at the February
meeting to report on the trial and get some more
volunteers. If anyone want to sign up before then, they
can email me at 1riverun@sbcglobal.net. The trial cannot
run without volunteers. Last year the club received
a check for approximately $7,000. A lot of support for
the club in that check! We are in a good spot on the
calendar as we are one of the first trials of the year and
everyone is anxious to start competing again. Sooooo
support the club. Volunteer.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving and hug your puppies.
Talk to you later.
Karin
As long as Ima Newbie doesn't have her name or
club name or logo on her Santa suit, she can wear
it. (She should not ask anyone if it makes her look
fat.). I wouldn't recommend it with the bells, as that
is distracting to her dog and others as well, and I
would personally ask her to remove the bells. However,
Fluff Ball should not have painted toe nails,
which would come under the "foreign substance"
rule, which could be grounds for excusal if it could
not be cleaned off, nor should Fluff Ball be wearing
any clothing. That would need to be removed.
Decorative collars are allowed as long as they are
well fitting, but the bells have to go! The leash may
lack taste depending on your point of view, but the
rules do not exclude rhinestones on the fabric or
leather. A little bling is not an aid to the dog.
ASK THE JUDGE
WYSIWYG
A guy is driving around the back woods of Montana and
he sees a sign in
front of a broken-down, shanty-style house: 'Talking
Dog For Sale '
He rings the bell, and the owner appears and tells him
the dog is in the
backyard.
The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking
Labrador retriever
sitting there.
'You talk?' he asks.
'Yep,' the Lab replies.
After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog
talk, he says 'So,
what's your story?'
The Lab looks up and says, 'Well, I discovered that I
could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the
government, so I told the CIA. In no time at all they had
me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with
spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog
would be eavesdropping.
'I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years
running. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I
knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle
down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some
undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters
and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings
and plots and was awarded a batch of medals.
'I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm retired.'
The guy is speechless. He goes back in and asks the
owner what he wants for the dog.
'Ten dollars,' the guy says.
'Ten dollars?! This dog is amazing! Why on earth are
you selling him so cheaply?'
'Because he's a liar. He never
did any of that shit.'
News from the State Capitols
Four state legislatures (Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio,
and Pennsylvania), and the District of Columbia are
currently in session. Forty-six states have adjourned
their regular sessions or are in recess. For the latest
information on the over 850 state and federal bills being
tracked by the Government Relations Department, visit
our 2009 Legislation Tracking page. This page, updated
daily, provides the latest bill text, status, and any
Legislative Alerts posted by the AKC.
Local Battles
Although most state legislatures have adjourned, many
municipalities are still considering ordinances that could
affect your rights as dog owners. If you hear of an issue
in your town or county, contact us at (919) 816-3720 or
doglaw@akc.org. We will be happy to provide you with
the resources, tools, and support you need to help fight
for responsible dog ownership in your community. Here
are some examples of the approximately 100 local issues
we are monitoring.
Louisville Court Ruling May Have Broader Implications
On October 2, a United States District Court judge issued
his decision in the case of the Louisville Kennel
Club, Inc. v. Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government.
A significant victory for the Louisville Kennel
Club, the judge's decision features two key rulings that
may also prove to be of great importance for dog owners
nationwide.
Among many new provisions, the animal control ordinance
passed in Louisville required only owners of unaltered
dogs to obtain written approval for dog enclosures.
The ordinance also required anyone accused of
animal cruelty to post bond for the care of their seized
animals, or risk forfeiture- even if the owners were later
found not guilty.
The judge declared that there is no rational basis for
treating owners of unaltered dogs differently than owners
of sterilized dogs. As a result, the portion of the law
regarding enclosures was ruled to be an unconstitutional
violation of equal protection and substantive due
process. The bond requirements for animal cruelty accusations
were also ruled to be an unconstitutional violation
of due process.
LEGISLATIVE ACTION
"We congratulate the Louisville Kennel Club and their coplaintiffs
on their leadership in opposing the Louisville
ordinance," said Dennis Sprung, President and CEO of
the American Kennel Club. "We are confident that this
decision will encourage communities to consider the
interests of responsible dog breeders and owners when
making changes to their animal ordinances."
************
This has been a challenging year for dog fanciers and
breeders. More than ever before, it seems our rights to
own and breed dogs are under attack. Yet in spite of
these challenges, we have much to be thankful for, as
this year we have also had a significant number of legislative
victories.
I encourage you to take a few minutes to review our ever
-growing list of legislative successes posted on our web
site. On the state and local level, thousands of fanciers
and breeders have worked tirelessly to protect our rights
with great success. The AKC has worked in collaboration
with them to defeat local and state-level mandatory spay/
neuter proposals, numerous breed-specific bills, ownership
limits, and also to defeat or significantly amend over
90 percent of the "breeder bills" introduced so far this
year.
As we pause a moment to count our blessings, it's also
important to remember that our work continues. As you
will see throughout this issue, numerous states and municipalities
still need your help. Whether or not your state
or community is currently considering canine legislation,
please continue to contact your legislators, invite them to
dog shows, and let them know the good works you are
doing in your community. All of these are simple ways
you can educate public officials about who we are and
the work we do on behalf of dogs and their owners. This
issue also includes some helpful tips on how to communicate
with legislators, so you can be sure you are being
an effective advocate.
This edition highlights three examples of how we as dog
owners, fanciers, and breeders can make a difference in
our community. We thank these three Community
Achievement Award recipients, our state federations,
clubs, and the thousands of people who have worked so
hard this year to protect our rights as dog owners. We
also extend a special word of thanks to the legislators
and public officials who have voted in favor of protecting
responsible dog ownership.
Thank you for partnering with us, and we look forward to
continue working together to stand up for responsible
dog ownership.
All the best,
Just What Is The Pet Page, Anyhow?
Have you heard of the Pet Page? Do you know what it is? Do you know why you
might want to be a part of it? Do you know how to be a part of it? Well, here are
answers to these important questions about which you may have been puzzled.
What is on the Pet Page?
A list of participating members past and present dogs and their titles, if any.
Where is the Pet Page Published?
In the MDDTC’s Obedience Trials catalog. In fact, it is usually several pages and
the number depends on how many members participate—the more the better.
Why would members want to list their dogs on the Pet Page?
Here are some possible reasons but your reasons may be different:
To remember all the wonderful dogs you have had in your life, even if they
have not earned titles
To brag just a little about what you and your dogs have accomplished
To show those who participate in our Obedience Trials the accomplishments of
our members’ dogs
To help support your club by paying the minimal fee of $1.00/dog to list them
How can you participate in the Pet Page?
To make it easy for you, select one of thefollowing methods:
Complete [PRINT NEATLY] the attached form and return it to Helene Cavior
with your payment either:
at a meeting in February or March, OR
by mailing it to her at 1921 Glenhaven Ave, Walnut Creek, CA 94595
Email the information to Helene at HECavior@DSLextreme.com
If you participated in 2006 or 2007, you can Email Helene and ask her for the
list of your dogs so you can simply edit it and return it to her by Email. This is
especially helpful if you listed a large number of dogs in either of those years.
SO, lets make this a very special year when even YOU participate in the Pet Page.
