LATIN?
euge!
NWHS and its cluster of primary schools
received enthusiastic praise this week for
the Latin project that started in September.
Representatives from Classics for All,
who are financing and monitoring the
project, braved the weather to travel from
London specially for the project. They
were impressed by the progress being
made by the Year 9 and 10 GCSE students
and the reports given at an evening
gathering for parents, teachers and
governors.
On the following morning a similar event
was held for all the 69 Primary children
from Years 3 to 6 as well as the Year 7
NWHS students currently studying the
“Minimus” Latin course.
Dr Jeremy Paterson, the main speaker at
both events, illustrated how evidence
provided by the famous Vindolanda
tablets reveals fascinating details of daily
life in Roman Britain almost 2000 years
ago. The commander of this fort, his wife,
family and slaves were the real people
who became the inspiration for the
“Minimus” course written by Barbara
Bell, who was making a welcome return
visit to NWHS.
latin
project
Our Latin students and teachers all agree
that having an opportunity to learn Latin
provides an extremely useful and practical
key to:
understanding the grammatical
structure of language and its different
parts of speech
the derivation of so many of our words
and, as a result, enabling new words to
be readily understood in English
learning modern foreign languages
faster and more efficiently
learning about the Ancient World and
the continuing impact of the Romans
on our history and culture
taking on new challenges, raising
aspirations and increasing selfconfidence.
This is a prestigious project, being one of
only eight in the whole country whose bid
for a grant was successful. It should
provide a model for other clusters to
follow, in line with the main aim of
Classics for All, which is to encourage and
support the reintroduction of Classics
teaching to state schools.
Friendly Face Wins Logo Contest
Art Student, Kaitlyn Richards was the proud
recipient of two complimentary cinema
tickets for winning the logo contest for the
Year 9 Friendly Faces group.
Friendly Faces is a group of students who
are available for Years 7 and 8 to air any
problems they may be having at home or
school, socially or academically. The
meetings are held in confidence and students
can go and see them at break and lunchtimes
in the office opposite the Key Stage Office.
Well done to Kaitlyn; her design fits
perfectly the role of the Friendly Faces. The
logo has been comprised of the words
‘Friendly Faces’ and has been written in a
font style that is bubbly, soft-edged, bright
and colourful. It also has a clever use of one
‘F’ for both words. A great effort that has
paid off with a free trip to our cinema!
Kaitlyn was able to work on this outside her
lesson time at Art Club, which takes place
every Friday from 2.50 to 4:00pm. We will
soon be painting the backdrops and sets for
the Grease musical production so if you are a
budding theatrical artist, please stop by on a
Friday afternoon, or see Mr Winser for more
information.
11 Prom.
Grand Prom Venue Booked
With plans well underway for the 2012
Year 11 Leavers Prom it got me thinking
about my leavers prom and how over 10
years ago I was getting just as excited about
my Year 11 prom.
Back then the prom wasn’t on the same
scale as today's and I think we were one of
the first NWHS year groups to successfully
organise one. The ‘Class of 2001’ prom was
held in the school hall and we all gathered
on the quad (which is now the English/Arts
Classroom and the Library) to watch
everyone arrive. The transport methods
were less extravagant. I remember arriving
in a ‘limo’ with 5 other friends which
looked more like a stretched Cortina with
two extra seats in the boot! The dresses
were more commonly off the rail summer
dresses, only the odd few had purchased
‘proper’ prom gowns. Despite that we had a
wonderful evening and all enjoyed
celebrating our final days at North Walsham
High School. Below is an article that
featured in the local papers on 5 th July 2001.
Taster Squash Sessions
Rossi’s Squash and Bowls club invited
twelve students to take part in a taster
sessions at their sports centre. Two groups
of six Year 10 students were fortunate to
have a qualified coach teach them the
basics of squash. None of the students had
tried the game before and were quite
bemused to be given a pair of protective
goggles to wear.
The Rossi’s team are trying to encourage
more youngsters to take part in the sport by
showing them the game of racketball,
which is a simpler version. They hope
eventually they will advance to the full
squash game.
The feedback from the students was very
positive; with a little more practice NWHS
might produce another squash world
champion!
This year’s prom will be slightly grander.
Being held for the first time at Drayton Old
Lodge in Norwich. The committee have
opted for a ‘Red Carpet’ theme with a disco.
The elegant grounds will enable some
wonderful photo opportunities. The whole
year group are currently voting on dinner/
dessert choices with options such as a pizza/
pasta bar, chip shop or hot dog stall as well
as the ever popular chocolate fountain and
new ideas of an ice cream bar or candy
buffet.
Many fundraising events organised by the
committee have already raised over £550. A
mufti day for the whole school scheduled
for Friday 30 th March will also help boost
funds. Please note the prom is open to
students from NWHS Year 11 only. We
urge students to get their £10 deposit in as
soon as possible so further plans can be
made.
Town’s Diamond Jubilee Plans
A few weeks ago, Ayla O’Connell and I were
invited to North Walsham Town Council
Offices to discuss North Walsham’s plans for
the Queens Diamond Jubilee street party. The
committee was made up of valued members of
the community. We mainly talked about what
the earlier Jubilees were like and how we could
stay true to the original street parties but also
keep it modern to attract the younger
generations. We discussed possibly having a
powerpoint showing the previous parties
playing in the background. It was also said that
we would have the original recipe for jubilee
cake being used! We should be having the
traditional set-up of tons of tables put together
for a community feeling. We are attending the
next meeting on 21 st February when we will
have more news for you on this exciting event.
Nathan Price, Year 9 Student

The annual Sports Presentation Evening
took place on Thursday 9 th December in the
Atrium at NWHS.
The guest speaker was again an ex-student
who has succeeded with sport being a
major part of her life. Mrs Fayanne
Connelly (nee Julian), a Sergeant in the
Royal Artillery (Gunners), spoke of the
core values that sport and the army share,
of the way they both enhance teamwork,
leadership, fitness and initiative. She
passionately spoke of the boundaries that
sport can cross and of the friends and
opportunities that sport had given her
throughout her life and still give her. Mrs
Connelly was there throughout the evening
to help hand out the various awards along
with Mrs Brooker and our Chair of
Governors Mr Russell Solly. These awards
CROSS COUNTRY
SEASON
From left to right, Silver award winners Lucy Ellis, Olivia Slater, Graham Hinton, Daniel
Cresswell, Grant Johnson and Daniel Middleton with Sergeant Fayanne Connelly.
It has been cross country season
at North Walsham High recently
and the school, district, county
and regional championships have
all taken place. The school championships
were run in the week before Christmas in
dry conditions as every student competed
in individual and form championships.
Congratulations go to our individual
winners who were; Year 7 Girls – Lauren
Hemp, Year 7 Boys – Kieran Wright, Year
8 Girls – Erin Smith, Year 8 Boys – Jack
Tritton, Year 9 Girls – Amy Hemp, Year 9
Boys – James McCrohon, Year 10 Girls –
Danielle Lee, Year 10 Boys – Daniel
Cresswell, Year 11 Girls – Sarah Annison,
Year 11 Boys – Ben Wright.
The top eight finishers in each race
qualified for the district event which was
held on Tuesday 10 th January as we
welcomed over a dozen other schools to
NWHS. In an incredibly successful day for
our runners five of our six teams finished
first in the overall competition. We had one
individual winner and twenty seven runners
who qualified for the county race at
Sloughbottom Park, Norwich. This event
welcomed all the best cross country runners
Sports Sports Presentation Presentation 2011
2011
included our Bronze, Silver and Gold
colours, the recognition of our winning
teams and individuals and the presentation
of the Graeme Wilton Award for Sporting
Excellence to Gaby Ryan for her exploits in
gymnastics and dance.
The presentations were interspersed with
video and picture clips as the evening
whizzed on with plenty of laughs and
applause. In true Sports Personality style
the final award was only able to be
presented to one half of our Sports
Personality of the Year duo as Daniel
Crosby was unable to attend due to playing
football. Georgia Bryant’s obvious surprise
and delight at being the female recipient
more than made up for this and the faces of
all the winners made it a truly memorable
evening.
from all the different districts in Norfolk,
who were competing to become county
champions and to qualify to run for
Norfolk .
The competition began brilliantly for
NWHS as in the very first race Lauren
Hemp WON the Year 7 Girls race. This is
an amazing feat for somebody who is
proving to be a very talented all round
sportswoman. There were other notable
performances from our students as Kieran
Wright came 32 nd in the Year 7 Boys race,
Georgia Wager finished 15 th and Amy
Hemp 20 th in the Year 9 Girls race and
James McCrohon came 36 th in the Year 9
Boys race. In the older age groups the
distance of the race was a huge factor and
all athletes who completed the race should
be commended, especially Danielle Lee
who came 27 th in the Year 11 Girls race
and Andrew Mitchell (20 th in the Year 11
Boys race).
BASKETBALL TRIP
Early on Sunday 15 th January, 50 of us
were up before daylight to catch a bus to
Birmingham for the British Basketball Cup
Final. Among us were a selection of
students from Years 7 to 11, all hoping to
see a great spectacle. We were not
disappointed as we watched the Women’s
league game and dunk contests - some of
which were from trampets with people
flying 15 feet in the air! There were also
shows from the BBL Babes cheerleaders
which meant that there was never a dull
moment during the 5 hours that we were
there. We all decided on which team we
would support before the Cup Final and in
the end the Newcastle Eagles were too
strong and beat the Plymouth Raiders (a
pity some of the students got their faces
painted with the losing teams colours!). We
arrived back at school at 10:40pm on
Sunday night after a long but exciting day:
some dreaming of Cup Final glory in the
future.
Iain Mills, PE Teacher
Lauren Runs
for Norfolk
Lauren Hemp’s reward for
winning the Norfolk
Championships was a
place in the Norfolk team
that travelled to the Royal
Hospital School, near
Ipswich for the Anglian
region championships. Here the best
athletes from Northamptonshire, Suffolk,
Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire were
competing. Having met the team bus at
9.30 on Saturday 4 th February, Lauren was
transported with her teammates for her race
to begin at 12.30. The course was a mixture
of gravel paths, school fields, a raised sea
wall, meadows and the edge of ploughed
fields. A determined run from Lauren saw
her finish in 9 th place, an amazing effort in
a quality race. This would have qualified
her for the English Schools Championships
if there was a race in the Year 7 age group.
She will have to wait for the Year 9 race to
go that one step further. Well done again
Lauren!!
