BOURTON TIMES
From the Editor
IT’S A NO-BRAINER!
There is only one ‘NO’. That’s the one that developers,
planners and our councillors need to hear really loud and
clear this summer – from our local communities and on
every possible occasion.
NO you can’t build that number of houses on our AONB.
NO you can’t add more traffic to our roads. NO you can’t
abuse our aging infrastructure. NO you can’t destroy the
character of our communities and expect us to sit and
watch. NO, NO, NO!
The problem of greedy developers is right across the
District and our planners have been caught without a Local
Plan with which to determine what can be built, where, and
when – leaving the North Cotswolds vulnerable to
exploitation. CDC reckon it will take until 2015 to have a
Plan. However, they have put aside £125,000 this year with
which to fight Planning Appeals on our behalves (not the
best tactic perhaps to tell the developers that in advance,
but never mind - when each development is likely to net
several £millions, that sum is chicken feed). So could that
money be better spent buying-in the expertise needed to
get a Local Plan - by this summer? What would it take to
build a fighting fund to see off the developers meanwhile?
Isn’t this the ‘rainy day’ that Reserves are for?
Talking of rainy days - there is one ray of rather murky light,
courtesy of Thames Water, who are admitting that the aged
infrastructure of waste water and sewerage that serves our
communities is breaking down, not coping. Our local
councils know that there has been foul water running in our
streets, and it can happen again. In Bourton, Thames Water
have acted to stop any and all further building/ connection
to water/sewerage until the whole infrastructure has been
made ‘fit for purpose’.
Our District and County Councils should be able to make
that work in our favour – shouldn’t they?
Wishing you some sunshine and warmer days for April,
Best wishes, Jenni Turner
Editor
(It’s an old joke but have you heard how to spot a
developer? He’s the one with the £note signs going round
in his eyes.)
A bustling edition which has kept us all on our toes as the ‘pieces of the jigsaw’
came together! Thank you Jan, Christabel & Chris – your help, sometimes at
very short notice, is very much appreciated! There are a lot of local issues and
politics around at the moment, and this is reflected on our pages, from
Freedom of Information to why we should vote for our representation at the
County Council. All this + our regular contributors = another packed edition,
which I hope you will enjoy!
We have a few new deliverers this month, which is really good news – we do
value community support in helping to deliver these magazines each month.
So THANK YOU to them and to all our volunteer deliverers. Without them the
magazine would not come through your letterbox or be available for you to
pick up locally. Our tiny budget covers our print and design bills each month
with some expenses and a very little more. So having local deliverers is vital –
it means that we can keep the magazines free of charge.
We are still short of help and will appreciate a few more volunteers to help
deliver in their areas – if you could help deliver some in your area, please let
us know. It’s 10-30 minutes, once a month and it will really help!.
25
YEARS OLD
Colin John Hair is proud to
be celebrating 25 years in
Moreton in Marsh.
Colin is just as passionate
about hairdressing today
as he was when he first
opened the salon, if not
more so.
“Hairdressing has changed so much in the last
25 years - it’s such an exciting industry to be in
and the opportunities are amazing. It is always
evolving and you never stop learning, which is
why I encourage the CJH artistic team to attend
training sessions and creatively express
themselves through our photographic work, not
just on the salon floor”.
Colin himself will be in London for a week in April,
learning new techniques to gain vision and
inspiration.
“With the training planned and yet another
refurbishment of the salon in April I want Colin
John Hair to stay at the forefront of hairdressing
in this area.”
We would like to say a
very sincere thank you
to all our customers
both old and new.
We NEVER take our
customers for granted
and we strive to offer
them a wonderful
experience.
Artistic Director and salon
manager Sara...
is one of the longest serving members of the
CJH team. I joined the salon some 12 years
ago as a hairdressing assistant.
“My work involves looking after my established clients as
well as delivering trend led styles to our younger clients.
Sara loves taking time out of the salon to attend training,
it’s so motivational, it makes you think outside of the box
and opens your mind to new ideas.
I think, in all, I just strive to be a fantastic hairdresser who
listens and looks after her clients well”.
Artistic Director Ria...
went straight into hairdressing after leaving
school. At the age of 21 she opened her own
salon in Kent which she ran for 9 years.
“I can’t believe I have been at CJH for nearly 10 years! I
really enjoy the photographic sessions we do, it pushes
my avant-garde looks to the limit! I love creating shapes
that allow the texture and movement of the hair to tell the
story. And I love nothing more than sending my clients
out looking great and with a spring in their step!”
Artistic Director Simon...
is the newest member of the team although it
seems like he’s been here forever! Simon
started his career as a Saturday boy in a salon
at the age of 13.
“I knew immediately it was what I wanted to do. I was
trained in-house and attended many courses on creative
colouring and cutting. I went on to manage the salon and
eventually took over the salon for five years”. Simon
found that owning & running the salon had a negative
effect on his passion for hairdressing and his family life
and returned to working as a freelance stylist in a local
salon. “I decided to join Colin and the team as I liked their
ethos, their positive approach to education and forward
thinking”.
Senior Stylist Charlotte...
came to the salon whilst completing her NVQ
at college. She is very popular with our very
young clients and enjoys working on men’s
hair - she is a qualified Barber.
“I love all the different aspects of my work at CJH. I really
enjoy working with colour to give styles an edgier look -
we can keep things looking delicate and natural, or bold &
funky. I am really looking forward to the 25thAnniversary
celebrations at CJH!!”
Naomi...
has been working for the company for 10
years and yet we still don’t know what her job
title is! That’s because she really is multitalented.
“I am at my happiest when working at my nail bar”, she
specialises in Gel Enhancements and Gel Colour.
However Naomi is a very experienced colourist whose
expertise is often sought, and if that isn’t enough she also
offers deep soothing head massages, leaving our
customers feeling calm and relaxed.
“And if I get any free time I like to be at Reception to meet
and greet our lovely clients.”
How healthy are you – really?
A simple question, with a minefield of answers. Depending on which bits of
the newspapers you read, we are either a nation of lazy, obese layabouts or a
bunch of fitness fanatics hell-bent on getting down to the gym at every
opportunity.
So how healthy are you, really? Answers might include “Yes, healthy – I eat
pretty well, walk the dog, don’t smoke”, or “Hmm, don’t really exercise, eat
too much fat, drink too much…” – in all likelihood the answer is a combination
of factors. Some good and some bad. You walk the dog – with a cigarette in
your hand; you go to the gym – but stop at the pub on your way home; you
watch your diet carefully – but spend most of your time sitting at your desk
and on the sofa.
You’ve probably heard of a lot of the ‘standard indicators’ of health: blood
pressure, cholesterol, weight, body mass index, resting heart rate, waist-to-hip
ratio, recovering heart rate. I could go on.
Knowing one or two of these is useful, and better than nothing, but if you
know a number for each of the above you can get an incredibly full insight into
your level of health and fitness and – most importantly – what you need to
think about changing in your life.
Example: a perfectly normal 50 year-old man, 6 feet tall, 13 stone with a desk
job who does some gardening at the weekend and just the occasional drink.
All seems fine, but there is high cholesterol, high blood pressure and a high
resting heart rate lurking unknown in the background: three major risk factors
to heart disease or a stroke.
We offer a free “Know your numbers” intro session at Cotswolds Health &
Fitness Club. We’ll test you for the key figures, discuss your lifestyle and help
you decide what to do next. It sounds scary to find out what might be wrong
by you, but believe me it’s much scarier to not know at all.
Call me on 01451 821320 for a chat.
April 21–27 is GREAT BRITISH BEEF WEEK –
What timing!
This month we are singing the
praises of great local beef from
our local farmers and butchers,
highlighting some of the places
where you can enjoy eating great
local beef, and where you can
buy great local beef to enjoy at
home and on the barbeque.
Harry the Hood, handsome young bull at Old Farm Dorn
Our great local beef farmers include 5L adies in Beef6, a group o f female beef farmers
who care passionately about British beef. Local livestock producer and TV presenter
Adam Henson, is Patron of Ladies in Beef, and delighted that some of their members
are Gloucestershire beef farmers.
We are fortunate to have great local butchers, too, providing local beef to local (and
not so local) restaurants, hotels, professional chefs, cooks and 5domestic god desses6,
of course! And, of course, the Cotswolds is known for many great local pubs and
restaurants where people can enjoy local beef, cooked and presented at its very best.
Each year Great British Beef Week celebrates the British Beef industry – and it is timed
to coincide with St George's Day (23rd April) each year. It is supported both at a local
level, with regional events, and nationally with the backing of the nation's biggest
supermarket retailers.
Ladies in Beef are campaigning to promote the versatility of beef, encouraging people
to check out the quality of the beef they are buying – which is why they are flying the
flag for the Red Tractor trademark. The Red Tractor is an independent mark of quality
that guarantees the food we6r e buying comes from farms and food companies that
meet high standards of food safety and hygiene, animal welfare and environmental
protection.
OLD FARM, DORN
www.oldfarmdorn.co.uk
Sarah Wrighton is a member of Ladies in Beef, and she is passionate
about the family farm just outside Moreton. “We breed sheep, cattle and
Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs as well as producing cereals, hay and silage to
feed to the stock over the winter months. We sell our home reared meats
and free range eggs in the Farm Shop, which has been expanded over the
winter.”
Their Old Farm Dorn website includes interesting updates on what
is happening on the Farm. “We have fresh beef available this week and I
can guarantee that it was born at Old Farm and has only been as far as Long
Compton.”
Old Farm, Dorm were Winners in the “Best Farm Shop” category at the
Cotswold Life Food and Drink Awards 2012, with The Horse & Groom at
Bourton on the Hill and Cotswold Food Store winning their categories.
This year Ladies in Beef is joining forces with the Royal Agricultural
Benevolent Institution (R.A.B.I.), a charity which helps farming families in
financial difficulty. Its work is funded by public donations, fundraising
events and initiatives and support from businesses and community
groups.
FarmerJs daughter Jenni Thompson is the new Regional Manager for this
area. Born and bred in Oxfordshire Jenni is well aware of the challenges
and opportunities facing the industry. She is keen to meet people and
organisations who would like to find out more, and happy to give talks on
how R.A.B.I can help farmers. “I see every opportunity as a chance to
reach a new audience, which may in turn help to raise more money for
this great cause or, more importantly, let someone know we are here to
help farming families experiencing financial difficulty.”
Robert and Alison Kirk have a simple passion for real food and a
deep respect for their Boram Herd of Pedigree Dexters and the
succulent, beautifully marbled beef, with its own unique flavour,
which these lovely cattle produce.
The Boram Herd was established in 1990 just outside Moreton,
and now all the cows have been Ipart o f the Boram Herd familyJ
since birth. The cows are happy and content and produce milk of
the finest quality for their calves for eight months, after which
time they are weaned from their dams and allowed to mature
naturally. So Boram Dexter Beef is produced from home-bred,
traditionally reared animals, ensuring full traceability and
consistency for our customers.
You can relax and enjoy Boram Dexter Beef at:
• The Horse & Groom, Bourton on the Hill
• The Coffee House, Church Street, Stow on the Wold
• The Red Lion, Little Compton
If you wish to buy our beef for use at home, we regularly supply:
• The Cotswold Food Store, Longborough
Are you planning a BBQ or event this year where beef burgers
will be I on the menuJ ?
Writing copy for the April edition is always difficult as I have to write prior to
the Budget & therefore it is foolhardy to try to comment on something that
hasn’t happened. What I can comment on is the urgent need to reduce tax if
the economy is to fare better this year. I keep on hearing the words “tax
breaks” but the Chancellor wouldn’t have to consider these if all tax rates
were set at a reasonable level. The starting premise should be that everyone,
including all companies, should pay tax. This would make HMRC’s job easier
as there would be no exemptions & therefore more time could be spent
dealing with the most vulnerable people in our society & those who seek to
avoid paying anything. Our tax system is in a mess & it needs a brave
Chancellor to get things moving. Somehow I don’t think that this Budget is
going to be the one that makes the difference.
It seems only yesterday that the last of the 2011/12 Tax Returns were filed in
January but here we are on the cusp of another tax year. If you’ve received a
notice to file a Tax Return for 2012/13 it’s a good idea to strike while the irons
hot by getting your paperwork in order as soon as possible. If your affairs are
not too complex then you could consider filing the Return yourself. It’s very
straightforward & there’s lots of online help available or, if you get stuck, you
can talk to an HMRC adviser on the phone. Filling in your tax return can be a
daunting task but if you organise your paperwork carefully & follow the
guidance notes it shouldn’t take you long. However, if you have several
income streams or your affairs are more complex than normal I would advise
talking to an accountant. It’s better to be prepared – too many people leave it
to the last minute, bringing about the possibility of a penalty or interest
payable on tax due.
If you have any doubt about filing your Tax Return or if you’re an employer
having problems with year-end paperwork, don’t hesitate in contacting your
accountant or you can contact me by phone or e-mail for free, impartial advice.
GIVING WILDLIFE A HELPING HAND IN COLD WEATHER
From Lucy at www.smallestsmallholding.com (14.03.13)
Wherever you are in the Cotswolds, no doubt you’ve been subject to
day after day of miserable weather conditions with wintry outbreaks
of sleet, snow, frost, rain, fog… and spring seems to be holding back
still. The birds think otherwise; every morning I wake to a dawn
chorus, and there seem to be an abundance of british birds here
that are eating me out of house and home. The cold weather has
meant that there’s not much of an abundance of food around for
them, as their winter larder of natural food sources has pretty much
given all it has to give.
So if you’re a nice, kind sort of soul, help them out, will you? Please?
Just a few sunflower hearts, some fat treats and even the bogstandard
corn bird feed mix will go some way to helping them
through until spring finally decides to show her face. They’ll be
starting to build nests, with some early starters like blackbirds
possibly already raising their broods, and need the extra sustenance
for themselves and eventually their chicks. Mealworms soaked in
water are a great source of hard-to-find protein for the birds, since
the cold weather is keeping insects away at this time of year. If your
birds don’t come to your feeders immediately – be patient! They will
find you – just don’t let your bird feed get soggy or go off. Keep the
contents fresh and soon your garden will be a wildlife haven too!
About this time of year the hibernating hedgehogs will also start
waking up; their fat stores depleted, they’ll be on the lookout for
food too, so if you’re able to leave out something (NEVER bread or
milk) – chicken-flavoured cat biscuits -you’ll be doing them more
than a massive favour. You could be helping to save little lives.
Military covenant begins to yield lasting dividends in Cotswolds
In February 2012 representatives from across Gloucestershire pledged their support for the Armed
Forces, when GCC, the six district councils, NHS and police as well as representatives from the
voluntary sector signed the Local Armed Forces Community Covenant.
The covenant is a voluntary statement of mutual support between a civilian community and its local
Armed Forces Community. The aim is to:
• Encourage local communities to support the armed forces community in their areas, and vice versa
• Promote understanding and awareness among the public of issues affecting the armed forces
community
• Recognise and remember the sacrifices made by the armed forces community
• Encourage activities which help to integrate the armed forces community into local life.
Signing the covenant also unlocks funding to help support Armed Forces families.
CDC has been working with other partner organisations in the county, Cirencester Town Council, the
Churn Project, GCC, Cirencester College, Play Gloucestershire and the RWay youth group at South
Cerney, to improve the integration of approx.1,000 South Cerney-based military family members into
the local community.
The community partnership between CDC and South Cerney-based 29 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps
has been going from strength to strength. There is now a regular bus service from the base on a route
between Swindon and Cirencester and service families have also welcomed a new programme of
children’s play and physical activities at the base. Additionally, CDC and the Regiment have worked
together to secure a grant of £14,000 from the Ministry of Defence which, supplemented by extra
funding from the council, will provide the following services over the next 12 months:
• 20 hours of English language training for speakers of other languages.
• 20 hours of adult learning classes on subjects chosen by the participants during ‘taster’ sessions.
• Monthly youth support outreach sessions, tying in with the existing youth club activities at the base.
• Whole day ‘Play Rangers’ children’s activities during school holidays.
• 10 hours of adult learning delivered by a local neighbourhood project.
• Two family learning days and one family outing.
• Housing presentations by the CDC housing team to provide information about accommodation
provision after army life.
• Monthly visits by the Citizens Advice Bureau.
Having reviewed all the informaton, correspondence, notes and
guidance relatng to the applicaton to build at the back of Roman
Way, Bourton Parish Council advised Cotswold District Council
Planning officers that they were no objectng to the applicaton.
Unusually, they added comprehensive notes, conditons and
restrictons relatng to the applicaton. Bourton Against
Development wrote to BPC.
Bourton on the Water Parish Council,
27th February 2013
Dear Members of Bourton on the Water Parish Council,
Re. Planning Application Ref. No. 13/00291/OUT
Land to North of Roman Way and to the East of Bourton Industrial
Park, Bourton on the Water
We, the members of Bourton Against Development (BAD) are
writing to express our profound dismay at your Planning
Committee’s decision on 13 February 2013 to raise no objections to
the above planning application. You simply have not read the 984
pages of this application and that is blindingly obvious because if
you had you would know what we know and in turn objected
overwhelmingly to it.
Our organisation is an official body convened to represent the
views of Bourton residents on current planning issues. We know
without any doubt from the size of our membership and the
attendance at a Public Meeting on 7th February, that they support
our considered view that this proposal should be refused. The land
is a Greenfield site outside of the Local Plan within the designated
AONB. Furthermore the village infrastructure is fragile and proven
to be inadequate at times and cannot support the load of an
additional 148 new houses.
As you are aware, our society is an official body convened to
represent the views of Bourton residents on current planning
issues. We know without doubt from the size of our membership
and the attendance at a public meeting on 7th February, that they
support our considered view that this proposal should be refused.
The land is a green field site outside of the Local plan within the
designated AONB. Furthermore the village infrastructure is fragile
and proven to be inadequate at times and cannot support the load
of an additional 148 new houses.
We feel it is incredulous that the Parish Council, as the democratic
body charged with representing the views of local residents felt in a
position to make their decision without themselves first consulting
the community (as noted would be the case on your own website)
and notwithstanding the request (unheeded) from our elected MP,
the Rt. Hon Geoffrey Clifton-Brown (unheeded) that they should
fully liaise with BAD in respect of this application.
We can only assume that in reaching your decision, you were
influenced by the lure of a financial contribution from the proposed
Section106 payment for community benefit – perhaps the
community centre and this together with the prospect of additional
parish precept was enough to buy your support. Surely you must be
the fisrt to realise the many years this could take to materialise? If
this is the case you have united short term gain with long term
disaster – you have sold out to these developers and not
represented those you claim to represent.
If this proposal gets the approval from Cotswold District Council you
will have to shoulder the local blame, knowing that by giving
32
BOURTON AGAINST DEVELOPMENT (B.A.D)
support to extending the village built boundary, this will create
urban sprawl in perpetuity with the attendant pressures on facilities
such as sewerage and drainage.
If this proposal gets the approval from Cotswold District Council you
will have to shoulder the local blame, knowing that by giving
support to extending the village built boundary, this will create
urban sprawl in perpetuity with the attendant pressures on facilities
Your decision also affects the cohesion of this village and threatens
the very existence of a true village lifestyle.
Yours faithfully
On behalf of Bourton against Development
B.A.D. Article to Bourton Times (20/03/13)
The Planning Application was finally submitted by Bloor Homes for
the development of 148 homes on the fields to the North of Roman
Way and Bourton Against Development quickly held a Public
Meeting on Feb 7th at the Victoria Hall to discuss the application.
The meeting was attended by over 100 concerned local residents
and the BAD Officers gave an overview of the 984 page planning
application that had been submitted.
These pages included a copy of a letter from Thames Water to a
Bloor retained Consultant that state: “Sewerage treatment capacity
in the area is unlikely to be able to support the demand anticipated
from this development.”
We believe that this is the most compelling piece of evidence to
come to light so far in defence of this Villages’ inadequate
infrastructure and that further development will only compound
the issue and problems already in existence.
As many local residents know, there have been tankers situated on
Rissington Road for over 3 weeks now pumping sewerage and foul
polluted water away from the pumping station which has nowhere
left to pump it too. Over 1 million gallons have now been taken
away by road to Witney. Tankers have been operating for over 15
hours a day and have caused a constant interruption for residents
with night lights, noise and smells. Tankers carrying 4-7,000 gallons
take only a short time to fill so many 100’s have been shunting
backwards and forwards, no doubt creating even more potholes
along that road and costing a fortune in the process.
Sewage & foul water has been spotted leaking from manholes and
road drains almost daily along Station Road from the Co-op down
past the garage and BAD urge all residents to call 0845 920 0800
and report such pollution to Thames Water so that a full report log
can be maintained.
The Planning Application on the Council’s website appeared to have
Delivering Bourton Times
CAN YOU HELP TO DELIVER
MAGAZINES IN YOUR AREA PLEASE?
If you live off Rissington Road, 20 minutes a month
Please call 07789 175 002
een on the Lower Slaughter Parish list rather than that of Bourton
on the Water and as such many locals with planning alerts in place
had not been aware of the submission. BAD announced that they
would be requesting an extension to the Consultation Period to
enable local residents to collate the evidence based material
required to object to the application.
BAD further pointed out that Bloor had been in discussions with
CDC Officers for over 18 months whereas the electorate has only 3
weeks to respond to the 984 pages of submissions. Fortunately the
formal request for an extension was granted and the deadline for
objections was extended to 15th March 2013.
Further additions were then added to the same application and
accepted by CDC part way through the consultation period. Many
of the flaws and errors in the application which had been pointed
out by BAD were changed also and this resulted in a further
extension to the deadline to March 20th.
On Wed 13th Feb a meeting of the Parish Council Planning
Committee voted in favour by 4 to 1 votes to support the
application as they could find no material reasons to object. BAD is
simply staggered that this has occurred and believes that this action
to support is pre-determined and lies within the promise of 106
payments (developers make cash payments to support local
activities, requirements and services) to support community
projects – namely the new community centre. Recently, the
Planning Inspectorate overturned a decision at Tetbury which
involved the building of almost 200 homes and subsequently
planning permission was given. This was quoted as reason to
support this application as seemingly the 5 year land bank supply is
short. BAD acknowledges this fact but firmly believes that it alone
is NOT reason enough to allow ALL applications through. Each
application must be judged individually and crucially the local
environment MUST be judged on its ability to sustain and support
development. Regrettably, BAD suggests that that the Village of
Bourton has been sold down the polluted river by those elected but
unopposed Parish Councillors who clearly do not have sufficient
grasp on the seriousness of their actions.
Brian Collins, a fellow of the Royal academy of Engineering is an
expert on infrastructure and is clear that the UK is in serious danger
of losing vital services to flooding with potentially disastrous
consequences. He says; “Our failure now to protect what we really
value will cost us dear when the worst happens. We are just not
facing up to reality.”
Perhaps people will face up a little more when, after June of this
year, many members of the Association of British Insurers may no
longer be offering house insurance to homes within flood risk areas
- and we already have members who tell us that they are in that
position.
BAD is currently preparing their response to the lengthy
consultation process and is dismayed that additional paperwork was
accepted by CDC part way through the consultation. We await the
decision to refer this application to full Planning Committee and are
in the meantime working across party to ensure both a full and
honest appraisal of this application. We are of course also weighing
up our legal options and have taken advice.
Council Committees
Only Planning and Finance committees possess delegated
powers, giving these committees the power to make decisions
which bind the whole Parish Council. All other committees are
advisory - all major decisions and expenditure are brought to full
Council for approval. Committee notes are circulated to Council
before each monthly meeting to ensure that Council is fully
aware of all minor actions and expenditure which committees
are permitted to carry out under Standing Orders, as well as
recommendations regarding major issues.
Members of the public are permitted to attend and speak at all
committee meetings, and a 5 minute slot is allocated for this
either at the beginning of each meeting, or before the relevant
agenda item, at the chairman’s invitation. Members of the
public wishing to attend a committee meeting to speak on a
specific topic are asked to contact the Clerk in advance to enable
an agenda to be prepared accordingly.
Council also establishes sub-committees to deal with specific
projects; such as the Community Centre project. Residents are
able to be co-opted onto these committees to lend their specific
experience and assistance in their work.
In February we had two reports on the same day that houses in
Moreton had been burgled overnight. We also had three reports
from Condicote. Sadly in all but one of these the premises had
been left insecure when the owners went to bed, so that all the
burglar had to do was open an unlocked door. Once inside they
helped themselves to purses, mobile phones and electrical items.
We are lucky that we live in a low crime area and cases such as
these rarely feature in our communities and it is easy to become
complacent. However, it is also just as easy to take measures to
prevent yourselves from becoming a victim of this type of crime.
Before you go to bed at night get into the routine of checking that
all of your doors and windows are locked. Remove the keys and do
not leave them near the door or window where they can be easily
reached. Make sure though that they are placed somewhere
accessible to you should you need to open the door in a hurry. Lock
garages, sheds and utility rooms, especially if they lead into your
home.
Take a look at your fences and walls to see if they could be made
more burglar proof. Solid walls and fences provide privacy but can
also hide a burglar’s movements. Garden trellis with prickly shrubs
are quite a good deterrent as trellis is not that stable to climb and
the shrubs are difficult to get through without injury. Install some
low level dusk to dawn lighting in your garden and in any dark
areas, such as side passages, where a person may hide.
Do not leave wallets, purses, handbags, car keys or mobile phones
on tables or work surfaces where they can be seen by someone
looking through the window. Always close your curtains or blinds
when you go to bed. If you, or your neighbour, have a dog and you
can hear it barking in the night check it out and take a phone
upstairs with you so that if you are woken up by a noise and think
you have an intruder you can call the police straightaway.
Another issue that was raised with us this month was the death of
two much loved cats. Sadly it appears that they may have ingested
anti-freeze which is lethal to them. Due to the time of year a lot of
people are making sure their cars are topped up with anti-freeze so
if you are using this liquid please make sure you rinse away any
spills and do not leave it in containers that family pets and wildlife
can easily drink from. It is heartbreaking enough to lose any family
pet but to lose one in these circumstances is so much worse. I am
sure no-one would be so cruel as to deliberately leave such
poisonous liquids about unattended for any animal to drink so
please check your sheds, gardens and garages and ensure your antifreeze
is securely stored.
If anyone has any information regarding any of the incidents in this
article then please either call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or
Gloucestershire Constabulary on 101.
2nd Birthday Celebration
ABC123 Daycare hosted a party to celebrate the
Moreton centre’s 2nd Birthday on 14th March, and
to raise some money for Comic Relief.
The party and staff dressed up for a ‘Mad Hatters
Tea Party. The children had made a lot of the crafts
for the event – including their hats. The nursery had
invited the children’s friends and family and and
there was lots of music and dancing, as well as a
treasure hunt to find the white rabbit, a
‘pin the smile on the cheshire cat’ game
and ‘throw the tea bag into the top hat’.
Parents were asked to make a small
donation and all the funds collected
were donated to Comic Relief – £225
was collected over the two Woodland
Centres (Moreton and Clevedon).
Kate Davis, Company Director said: ”It
was a really great day! The children had
fun making crafts for the tea party and
loved using real china cups, saucers and
teapots - miraculously with no
breakages. The parents had a chance to
enjoy the day with the children and we
are absolutely delighted that we raised a
great sum of money for Comic Relief”.
Moreton Rangers fell at the final hurdle in their County Cup semifinal
against Minsterworth mid-March. Following a pulsating Cup
Match the sides were divided by one missed penalty of the ten in
the shootout.
The game started at a high pace with plenty of action form the
start. Minsterworth had already hit the bar with a header before
Matt Magee for Moreton put them ahead on eight minutes. Good
link up play by the Moreton forwards saw Conner Sherry feed
Magee on the left edge of the box where he cut in to shoot past the
keeper for the opener. Their lead was short lived as by the fifteenth
minute Minsterworth were in front with two quick fire goals helped
by some poor defending by the home defence. Magee again
threatened for Moreton and cut in from the left wing to have
another shot but was parried by the keeper and Sherry was unable
to reach the rebound. Things were level before half time when
good control and skill by Conner Sherry in the opposition box led to
a rash challenge on him by the centre back and a penalty was
rightly awarded. Danny Sherry stepped up to convert the spot kick
Photo: Danny Sherry convertng Moreton’s second penalty.
The second half started with more confusion in the Moreton
defence in the first minute which led to Minsterworth taking the
lead again with an easy finish as the hapless defenders looked on.
Moreton were now chasing the game and Martin Tomes came on.
His pace started to stretch the Minsterworth defence as he
outstripped them with some deft touches on the left wing before
racing through on goal, only to be denied by the keeper’s
outstretched foot. With ten minutes left Tomes again threatened,
this time down the right flank, and as he reached the by-line to
cross, was taken out by the keeper which led to a second penalty
for the home side. Danny Sherry again converted the spot kick to
bring the scores level three each. Ben Shurmer saw a long range
chip just clear the bar with the keeper stranded as both teams
went for a winner, but the scores remained level at the end of
normal time.
The penalty shootout produced some excellent kicks from both
sides with neither keeper having a chance of a save, but the
unfortunate Sam Tyack saw his kick hit the post ending Moreton’s
run in the competition.
Cultivate Your Career
Horticulture is for drop outs, it’s unskilled and unfulfilling according to
young people - these are the findings of a survey commissioned by
the RHS. We’re concerned about this image problem and the looming
skills gap threatening horticulture’s workforce.
During National Gardening Week 2013 the RHS will host interactive
activities for school pupils and college students aged 14-18 years with
the hope of changing young people’s perceptions of horticultural
careers.
RHS Gardens will offer a taste of the breadth of horticultural careers
on Thursday 18 April. Students will be able to interview and garden
with some of the best scientists, botanists, TV presenters, curators
and artists to name a few, from across the horticultural world. A
confirmed list of inspirational speakers will be announced soon. If
your school or college would like to participate please email
ngwcareers@rhs.org.uk.
On Saturday 20 April, RHS Gardens will be helping potential career
changers to consider horticulture with talks and Q&A opportunities
from inspirational horticulturists. Information on how to get into
Horticulture, RHS courses and qualifications and case studies will all
be on offer.
The green skills gap
The UK’s horticultural industry employs nearly 200,000 people and
has been buoyant throughout the recession. However, not enough
young people are learning the skills required to fill jobs within the
sector.
Last month three local charities – Kate’s Home Nursing, Home-Start
Cotswolds, and the Sam Pilcher Trust – each received a cheque for £1000.
“We chose these charities because they each do so much to help vulnerable
families, those who are sick
and in need of nursing care, or
whose children have cancer,”
said club president Bob
Hadley. “We have been very
impressed by their wonderful
work in the local community,
and we are delighted to
support them.”
“Being at the heart of our
